I feel relieved. And I feel sad that my father made this day harder than it needed to be.”

Ethan nodded.

“You can feel all three.”

“I keep thinking about how easy it would have been for him to call me and say he was sorry.”

“He still can.”

“But he hasn't.”

“No,” Ethan said gently. “He hasn't.”

There was no accusation in his voice.

That made the truth harder to avoid.

I had spent years filling in the spaces where my father failed to show up.

When he forgot something important, I told myself he was busy.

When he chose Lauren's needs over mine, I told myself she needed more help.

When my mother asked me to be understanding, I treated understanding as a duty.

I had become so practiced at explaining their behavior that I rarely stopped to ask what it was costing me.

Ethan touched my cheek.

“You don't have to decide what happens with them tonight.”

“I know.”

“And you don't have to pretend it didn't hurt.”

“I know that too.”

He kissed my forehead.

For a little while, we stood beneath the courtyard lights without speaking.

Then I heard a familiar voice behind us.

“Amelia?”

I turned.

My mother stood a few steps away.

Her dark blue dress caught the light from the doorway, and she held her purse tightly against her side.

Ethan straightened but did not move away from me.

“Mom.”

She glanced at him, then back at me.

“Your father wants to speak with you.”

My stomach tightened.

“About what?”

“He says he wants to explain.”

I waited for her to say something else.

An apology would have been welcome.

An acknowledgment of what she had asked me to accept would have been welcome too.

Instead, she looked toward the reception hall.

“People noticed what happened at the ceremony.”

There it was.

Not that I had been hurt.

Not that my father had broken his promise.

People had noticed.

“Mom, I didn't arrange anything to embarrass him.”

“I didn't say you did.”

“You didn't have to.”

Her mouth tightened.

“Today was supposed to be a happy day.”

“It is a happy day.”

“Then why are you making this difficult?”

I stared at her.

For years, that question would have made me apologize.

I would have searched for a gentler explanation, something that would allow her to leave without feeling uncomfortable.

This time, I answered honestly.

“Because I'm not willing to pretend nothing happened.”

My mother looked at Ethan.

He said nothing.

I was grateful he did not speak for me.

“This isn't the place for a family argument,” she said.

“Then we don't have to argue.”

“Your father is upset.”

“So am I.”

She looked genuinely surprised.

I had spent so long making my feelings smaller that perhaps she had forgotten they were there.

“I'll speak with him later,” I said. “Not tonight.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“He came all this way.”

“So did I.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then my mother turned back toward the barn.

“I hope you know what you're doing.”

I watched her walk away.

The old guilt arrived almost immediately.

It told me I had been too firm.

It told me I could have softened my words.

It told me a good daughter would have gone after her mother and made things right.

Then I remembered the closed oak doors.

I remembered standing behind them with my bouquet shaking in my hands.

I remembered Robert asking whether I was ready.

I remembered answering yes.

“I think I do,” I whispered.

Ethan took my hand.

“Let's go celebrate our wedding.”

I smiled at him.

“All right.”

When we returned to the reception, Robert noticed us from across the room.

He did not ask what my mother had said.

He simply raised his glass in our direction.

I raised mine in return.

Then the photographer called us over for another picture.

Ethan slipped his arm around my waist.

Robert joined us on my other side.

For the photograph, I stood between the two men who had shown me that love was not proven by a title.

It was proven by showing up.

The camera flashed.

I did not know how many years that photograph would survive, or how often I would look at it later.

I only knew that, in that moment, I was exactly where I wanted to be.

And I did not need anyone else's permission to stay there.

Source: <a
