Just you and me.

I stared at the message.

My first instinct was to agree immediately.

Then I remembered how I had felt when he told me not to create drama.

I did not want to punish him.

I did not want to make him wait just because I had been made to wait.

But I also did not want to rush into a conversation before I was ready.

I typed a reply.

I can talk tomorrow. I want us to discuss what happened honestly. I'm not ready to pretend it was nothing.

I read the message once before sending it.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Then I pressed send.

The message showed as delivered.

My father did not reply immediately.

I placed the phone on the workbench.

Ethan glanced at me.

“How do you feel?”

“Uncomfortable.”

He smiled slightly.

“That's not always a bad sign.”

I laughed.

“No. I suppose it isn't.”

That afternoon, we unpacked our bags.

We put away the clothes and set the wedding photographs aside to be sorted later.

Ethan ordered food because neither of us wanted to cook.

We ate at the kitchen table and talked about where we might go for our honeymoon.

For a few hours, the day belonged to us.

The family problem had not disappeared.

But it had stopped being the only thing in my life.

That evening, I looked at the bouquet on the counter.

Some of the petals had begun to curl at the edges.

I knew the flowers would not last forever.

Neither would the wedding day.

What would last was the memory of the choice I had made when the person I wanted beside me could no longer stand there.

I had not chosen Robert to hurt my father.

I had chosen him because he had said yes.

And I had finally allowed that to be enough.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: WHAT SHOWING UP MEANT

The next morning, sunlight slipped through the curtains of the small room we had booked near the barn.
