We can work out what they need. We can talk about the money and decide what makes sense."

He shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"It's complicated."

"Then explain the complicated part."

He pushed his chair back.

I thought he was going to answer.

Instead, he stood and walked toward the hallway.

"Tony."

He stopped.

I looked at the receipts between us.

"How long have you been doing this?"

He didn't turn around.

"Please, Jennifer."

"How long?"

He remained silent.

I waited for him to give me a date.

A month.

A year.

Anything that would help me understand how much of our marriage had been built around a secret.

Finally, he said, "I can't do this right now."

Then he walked into his office and shut the door.

I stayed at the table.

The receipts were still spread in front of me.

I had imagined that finding evidence would make things clearer.

Instead, I knew only that Tony had been hiding something involving a child, a medical clinic, and money.

I didn't know who the child was.

I didn't know why Dakota had become involved.

And I didn't know how long my husband had been lying to me.

I gathered the documents and put them into a folder.

I wasn't going to let him dismiss the matter and return to his usual routine.

The next morning, I wrote Dakota a note.

I told her I had found the clinic payments.

I explained that Tony had admitted helping a family but had refused to tell me who they were.

I asked her to contact me.

I included my phone number.

I didn't know whether she would respond.

Part of me still hoped there was an explanation that would leave my marriage intact.

Another part of me had begun to suspect that the truth would be much harder to live with than the questions.

That evening, my phone received a message from an unfamiliar number.

I opened it.

The message was brief.

Dakota wanted to meet at our house on Friday evening.

Tony needed to be there.

I read it twice, then showed him.

He had been sitting in the living room.

When he saw the message, the color seemed to leave his face.

"Cancel it."

I looked at him.

"No."

"Jennifer, please."

"You've had opportunities to explain this. You haven't taken them."

He stood.

"You don't understand what this could do."

I felt something inside me settle.

"Then tell me what it could do."

He opened his mouth, but no answer came.

I had spent years accepting his explanations because I loved him.

I had treated his requests for more time as promises that he would eventually make good on.

Now I realized that time had become a place where he could hide.

Every time I asked a question, he asked me to wait.

Every time I wanted a decision, he gave me another reason to postpone it.

I looked at him and thought about my father.

I thought about the Saturdays when I had sat near the window, certain that the next car would be his.

Tony knew those memories.

He had listened to me talk about them when we were young.

He had held me when I cried.

He had promised that I would never have to feel that kind of disappointment with him.

I swallowed the tightness in my throat.

"My father used to tell me he'd show up."

Tony's expression softened, but I wasn't finished.

"He'd promise to come, and I'd believe him. Then I'd spend the day waiting for someone who never arrived."

"Jennifer, this isn't the same thing."

"Then stop making me wait for the truth."

He looked down.

I had never spoken to him that way before.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because I had always believed that if I gave him enough understanding, he would eventually give me an answer.

That belief was beginning to disappear.

"I need you to be here on Friday," I said.

He rubbed his forehead.

"All right."

"And I need you to stop telling me this is nothing."

He nodded.

I went upstairs.

For the next two days, we moved around the house like people who had forgotten how to speak to each other.

Tony went to work.

I took care of ordinary things.

We ate meals without discussing anything important.

Sometimes I caught him watching me, as though he wanted to say something.

Whenever I looked back, he turned away.

I tried to imagine what Dakota might bring with her.

Perhaps more receipts.

Perhaps a letter.

Perhaps proof of an affair.

The thought made me feel sick, but I couldn't dismiss it.

I had no idea how much of what I believed about my marriage was still true.

On Friday afternoon, I cleaned the dining table.

I put the clinic receipts into the folder and placed it beside the bank records.

I set out two glasses of water.

Then I looked at the empty chair across from mine.

For years, I had imagined that chair occupied by a child.

I had pictured small hands reaching for a glass, homework spread across the table, and birthday cakes that left crumbs on the floor.

I had pictured Tony sitting there, laughing with our son or daughter.

I had never imagined a stranger would sit in that chair to explain why none of it had happened.

At 6:58, Tony was pacing in the living room.

He had barely spoken all day.

I sat at the dining table and watched the clock.

At seven, the doorbell rang.

I stood.

Tony stopped pacing.

Neither of us moved for a second.

Then I walked to the front door.

Dakota was standing outside.

She held a folder against her chest.

And from the way she looked past me toward Tony, I knew she had not come to talk about coffee.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Little Girl in Dakota’s Photograph Had a Name, a Mother, and a Father Who Had Spent Four Years Pretending He Wasn’t One

Tony came through the front door at 4:47.
