I mean with Lily. Are you going to keep visiting her as a friend? Are you going to keep sending money and pretending that's enough?"

He took a breath.

"No."

I waited.

"I'm going to tell her."

"When?"

"Soon."

I closed my eyes.

The word sounded familiar.

"That's what you've been saying for years, isn't it?"

He went quiet.

I had no desire to punish him with silence, but I wasn't going to make his promises easier to keep by accepting another vague answer.

"I can't tell you what to do," I said. "But you need to understand that Lily doesn't have four more years to wait for you to become ready."

"I know."

"And neither do I."

He didn't answer.

For the first time, I wasn't trying to make him feel better about his own fear.

I ended the call after we agreed to speak again later.

Then I stood in the kitchen for a long time.

I didn't know whether I wanted Tony to come home.

I missed him.

That was the truth, and I couldn't pretend otherwise.

I missed the familiar sound of his keys.

I missed hearing him ask about my day.

I missed the man who had sat beside me when I was sixteen and promised that I would never have to wonder whether my husband would show up.

But missing someone didn't mean I could trust him.

That afternoon, I walked to the front window.

Dakota was outside, standing near her car.

I watched her for a moment before deciding to cross the street.

When she saw me, she looked uncertain.

"Jennifer."

"Can we talk?"

She nodded.

We stood on her front step.

I didn't know how to begin, so I started with the question that had been bothering me since Friday.

"How much does Lily know about Tony?"

Dakota looked down.

"Not much."

"Does she know he's been helping with her expenses?"

"No. Emily told her that some people had helped them when money was tight, but she never explained the details."

I tried to imagine a four-year-old understanding any of this.

She would know that her mother was gone.

She would know that she was living with her aunt.

She would have questions about the people around her and the things adults said when they thought she wasn't listening.

I wondered whether Tony had ever considered how much she noticed.

"How is she doing?" I asked.

Dakota's expression softened.

"Some days are better than others."

I nodded.

I didn't ask for details.

Lily's grief wasn't mine to investigate.

But I wanted to understand what Dakota had been carrying while I had been worrying about coffee cups and secret messages.

"I thought you were interested in Tony," I admitted.

She looked surprised.

"I know."

"I was wrong."

Dakota looked away for a moment.

"I understand why you thought that."

I took a breath.

"I'm sorry I accused you of having an affair with him."

She accepted the apology quietly.

"Thank you."

We stood in silence.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Do you think he'll tell Lily the truth?"

Dakota looked toward the house.

"I hope he will."

"Do you trust him to do it?"

She took a long moment before answering.

"I trust that he loves her. I'm not sure he knows how to turn that love into something she can depend on."

I understood that answer.

I had loved Tony for years.

I had believed his love was enough to make our future safe.

Now I knew that love could exist beside fear, selfishness, and choices that hurt the people who depended on you.

I returned home before the conversation could become something more personal.

That evening, I opened the cupboard where we kept old photographs.

I found a picture of Tony and me on our wedding day.

We looked young.

His arm was around my waist, and I was smiling at the camera.

I remembered the promise he had made when we exchanged our vows.

I had believed that the future was something we would build together, one decision at a time.

I put the photograph back.

Then I sat at the dining table.

Lily's picture was still there.

I looked at the two images in my mind.

The wedding photograph.

The little girl.

Both belonged to Tony's life.

Only one had been allowed into our home.

And I was beginning to understand that the problem wasn't simply that he had hidden Lily from me.

It was that he had decided, without asking me, which truths I was allowed to live with.

I couldn't undo that decision.

But I could decide what happened next.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Questions I Had Once Asked About Becoming a Mother Began to Sound Different When I Finally Understood What My Husband Had Been Hiding

The front door closed behind Tony.
