I thought I could become part of Lily's life, work out what to tell you, and find a way to explain everything."

I studied his face.

"And while you were working out how to explain it, you let me believe we weren't ready for a child."

He lowered his head.

"Yes."

"Did you ever think about telling me before we got married?"

He looked up sharply.

"I didn't know about Lily then."

The answer was immediate.

I believed him about that.

The affair had happened five years earlier, after we had already married, and the pregnancy had been discovered after the relationship ended.

But that did not make the years that followed any easier to understand.

"You could have told me when you found out Emily was pregnant."

"I should have."

"You could have told me when Lily was born."

"Yes."

"You could have told me when I started asking you when we could have a baby."

He closed his eyes.

"I know."

I leaned back.

"Then help me understand why you didn't."

He took a long breath.

"At first, I thought staying away would protect you and Emily from more pain. Then I started sending money. I told myself that was something useful I could do without making everything worse."

"And later?"

He looked down at his hands.

"Later, I was ashamed. Every time you asked about having children, I remembered what I hadn't done for Lily. I kept thinking I needed to sort that out first."

I felt my throat tighten.

"So you let me wait."

He nodded.

"You let me think we were building toward something together, when you knew there was a part of your life you weren't telling me about."

"I know."

"You didn't give me the chance to decide whether I could live with the truth."

He looked at me.

"I was afraid you'd leave."

I shook my head slowly.

"You were so afraid of losing me that you made the decision for me."

He had no answer.

That was the part I couldn't stop returning to.

He had taken away my ability to choose.

He had decided that I couldn't handle the truth, so he had given me a version of our life that was easier for him to maintain.

He had treated my trust as something he could borrow indefinitely.

And he had done it while knowing how much I wanted to become a mother.

I looked at Lily's photograph.

"What are you going to do now?"

Tony followed my gaze.

"I'm going to tell her."

"When?"

He swallowed.

"Soon."

I felt my patience begin to disappear.

"Tony."

He looked at me.

"I can't accept that word anymore. If you mean you're going to tell her, then you need to make a real decision. You can't keep asking everyone to wait until you're less afraid."

He nodded.

"You're right."

I wanted to believe that he understood.

But I had heard him acknowledge his mistakes before.

The important question was whether he would act differently.

"What does Dakota expect from you?"

"She wants me to be honest with Lily and be involved in her life."

"And what do you want?"

He looked at the photograph for a long time.

"I want to know my daughter."

The words were simple.

I wondered how many times he had thought them without saying them aloud.

"Then start there," I said.

He looked at me.

"I don't know whether I can stay married to you."

His face tightened.

"I understand."

"No. I don't think you do. I love you, but I don't know if I can trust you. And I won't promise to stay while you work out whether you're ready to be a father."

He reached for the edge of the table.

"I'm not asking you to promise that."

"You asked me to wait for years."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

I stood and walked to the kitchen.

I needed a moment away from his face.

When I returned, he was still sitting at the table.

The photograph remained between us.

I sat down again.

"I need you to understand something about Lily."

He looked up.

"I don't blame her. I don't want you to think that my anger toward you means I want her to lose her chance to know her father."

"I know you don't."

"She deserves honesty. She deserves someone who keeps his promises. And if you're going to be that person, you have to do it because she needs you, not because you think it will persuade me to stay."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand."

I hoped he did.

I didn't want Lily to become another way for him to avoid the consequences of his choices.

She wasn't a test he could pass to win back his marriage.

She was his daughter.

He had a responsibility to her whether I forgave him or not.

Tony stood.

"I should go."

I walked him to the door.

He stopped before stepping outside.

"Do you think there's any chance for us?"

I looked at him.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

For once, he didn't ask me to give him more time.

He walked to his car.

I watched him leave, then closed the door.

The house was quiet again.

I returned to the dining room and sat beside the photograph.

I couldn't decide what hurt more.

That Tony had betrayed me.

Or that the man who knew exactly how much a broken promise could damage a person had spent years making them to two different women, in two different ways.

I had been waiting for him to become ready for fatherhood.

Lily had been waiting for a father she didn't even know she had.

Now the waiting had to end somewhere.

I just didn't know whether my marriage could survive what came next.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Photograph Stayed on Our Dining Table, Reminding Me That Forgiveness Could Not Be Another Promise Made Before the Truth Was Faced

Tony asked to see me in person.
