I said.

"I won't."

I almost reminded him that he had said similar things before.

Instead, I waited.

He told me he had spoken to Dakota about the next steps.

He wanted to stop hiding from Lily.

He wanted to find a way to tell her the truth carefully, without making her feel responsible for what had happened between the adults.

I listened.

I didn't offer to help him plan the conversation.

That was his responsibility.

When he finished, he asked whether I believed him.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

"I believe you want to do the right thing."

He was quiet.

"But wanting to do it and actually doing it are different," I continued. "I need to see what happens next."

"I understand."

We spoke for a few more minutes.

Then we ended the call.

I sat alone at the table.

For the first time in days, I felt a little less angry.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Not because I believed our marriage would return to what it had been.

I felt less angry because Tony had finally begun talking about Lily as a person who needed him, rather than as a secret he needed to manage.

That mattered.

It didn't erase the past.

It didn't restore my trust.

But it mattered.

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the house renovation.

I remembered how carefully Tony and I had chosen everything.

We had discussed the kitchen cabinets, the flooring, and the paint colors.

We had argued over small details and laughed when our plans went wrong.

We had imagined a child growing up in those rooms.

I had believed we were preparing for a future together.

Now I understood that a house could be finished while a family remained unfinished in ways no renovation could fix.

The rooms were ready.

The future we had planned was not.

I went to the dining room and moved Lily's photograph away from the receipts.

I placed it upright against a small frame that had been sitting unused in a drawer.

It wasn't a declaration that I was ready to welcome her into my life.

It wasn't a promise that I would become part of her family.

It was simply a way of acknowledging that she existed.

She was not a mistake to be hidden in a folder.

She was a little girl whose life had been affected by decisions she had never been old enough to understand.

I looked at her photograph.

"I hope he shows up for you," I whispered.

The words surprised me.

I had spent so much time thinking about what Tony's secret had taken from me that I hadn't fully considered how much it had taken from her.

I couldn't change what had happened.

I couldn't give her back the years when she didn't know her father.

I couldn't undo Emily's death or make the future simple for Dakota.

But I could refuse to make Lily responsible for my pain.

That was one decision I could make for myself.

Later that day, I walked past the front window.

Across the street, Dakota was helping Lily into the car.

The little girl was wearing a light jacket and holding something small in one hand.

I couldn't see what it was.

Dakota bent down to speak to her.

Lily nodded, then climbed into the car.

I watched them drive away.

I didn't follow.

I didn't cross the street.

I wasn't ready to meet her, and I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

But I no longer felt the same suspicion I had felt when Dakota first began bringing Tony coffee.

I understood what she had been trying to do.

She had been trying to make sure that a little girl didn't grow up believing her father was simply a man who had once known her mother.

I turned away from the window.

My marriage was still uncertain.

Tony's next choices were still ahead of him.

And I still had to decide whether love could survive the discovery that the person I trusted most had kept an entire part of his life from me.

I didn't know the answer.

For years, I had believed that if I waited long enough, everything would eventually fall into place.

Now I knew better.

Some things only changed when someone stopped waiting and finally did what needed to be done.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Could No Longer Measure My Husband by the Promises He Made, Only by What He Was Finally Willing to Do

The following days felt longer than they should have.
