I want to be involved in her life, and I don’t want Dakota to carry everything alone.”

“Did you tell her that before or after she asked you to?”

“After.”

I nodded.

It was not the answer I wanted, but at least he had not tried to make himself sound more decisive than he had been.

“What did she say?”

“She said Lily needs consistency. She doesn’t want me appearing when I feel guilty and disappearing when things become uncomfortable.”

I looked at him.

“Does that sound familiar?”

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Because that is exactly what you’ve done with me.”

“I know.”

“Tony, you cannot keep saying that as if recognizing the problem is the same as fixing it.”

“I’m not saying it to fix anything. Helping with what Lily needs. Spending time with her. Being honest about who I am to her.”

“Have you decided how you’ll tell her?”

“Not yet. Dakota and I need to talk about what is appropriate for her age.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

He looked relieved, and I stopped him before he could mistake my agreement for forgiveness.

“But you need to understand something. But often.”

“And you still told me we needed more time.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Because I was afraid of what would happen if I told you. I knew you wanted a family. I knew you wanted to be a mother. I thought if we had a child together, everything I had done would become impossible to hide.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“So you made me wait because you were afraid I would discover that you had already become a father.”

“I was afraid of losing you.”

“You were willing to let me lose years of my life instead.”

He looked up.

“I didn’t think of it that way.”

“That is the problem, Tony. Because when you say you understand, part of me still hears you asking me to move on.”

He shook his head.

“I’m not asking you to move on.”

“Then don’t ask me to tell you what happens next.”

He sat quietly.

I could see how much he wanted a clear answer.

He wanted to know whether I still loved him.

He wanted to know whether he could come home.

He wanted to know whether doing the right thing for Lily would make it possible for us to return to the life we had before.

But there was no honest answer I could give him.

“I still care about you,” I said eventually. “That hasn’t disappeared just because I’m hurt.”

His eyes lifted toward mine.

“But caring about you doesn’t mean I can trust you.”

He nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“And I don’t know if trust can come back.”

“I hope it can.”

“So do I,” I said.

It was the first time I had admitted that aloud.

It did not feel like forgiveness.

It felt like acknowledging that the future was still uncertain, even to me.

Tony looked toward the dining table.

Lily’s photograph was still in the frame I had placed there.

“You kept it out,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me for that.”

He turned back toward me.

“I’m not saying you owe me anything. I just—”

“I know what you mean. But that photograph is there because Lily exists. Not because I’ve decided what I feel about you.”

He looked at the picture again.

“I understand.”

This time, I believed that he was at least trying to hear me.

That was not the same as knowing he would act differently.

We talked a little longer about practical matters.

Tony said he would keep communicating with Dakota about Lily’s needs.

He would not make promises to the child until he and Dakota had agreed on what to tell her.

He would not ask me to attend their conversations or pretend I was ready to meet Lily.

I told him that was right.

Lily needed adults who could make decisions based on her well-being rather than their own discomfort.

When he stood to leave, he hesitated near the doorway.

“Can I ask you something?”

“You can ask.”

“Do you think there is still a chance for us?”

I looked at him.

I could have softened the answer.

I could have told him that our years together meant something, that I did not want to throw away a marriage, that perhaps time would make the pain easier to carry.

All of those things were partly true.

But I had learned what happened when I let a comforting possibility become a promise.

“There may be a chance,” I said. “But I can’t give you one just because you’re finally telling me the truth.”

He swallowed.

“What would you need?”

“I need to see who you are when nobody is standing over you, asking you to do the right thing.”

He nodded.

“I can do that.”

“Then do it.”

He left without asking to stay.

After the door closed, I remained in the living room for a while.

I was not relieved.

I was not suddenly certain.

But I had said what I needed to say without rescuing him from the consequences of hearing it.

That evening, I stood at the kitchen counter and made myself dinner.

I ate at the table where Lily’s photograph rested beside an ordinary glass of water.

For years, I had imagined motherhood as a room I was waiting to enter.

I had pictured a small bed, toys on the floor, a child's voice calling for me from another room.

Now I understood that becoming a parent was not only about longing for a child.

It was also about truth, responsibility, and the willingness to show up when life became difficult.

Tony had failed at those things in ways I could not ignore.

But Lily was still a little girl who deserved the chance to know her father.

Those two truths did not cancel each other out.

I finished my dinner and washed my plate.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

The photograph remained on the table.

I left it there.

Not because I knew what our family would become, but because I was no longer willing to pretend that the truth could be made smaller by putting it away.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Wanted a Child With My Husband for Years, but I Could Not Let Lily Become the Price of Our Broken Marriage

Tony came by on Saturday afternoon.
