He's six years old. He doesn't understand what he's saying.”

Owen flinched.

I saw it happen, and something inside me tightened.

Children should not be afraid of their fathers like that.

At least, that was what I had always believed.

Judge Walsh raised one hand.

“Mr. Dawson, you will not interrupt this child.”

Nolan pressed his lips together.

His eyes remained fixed on Owen.

I knew that look. You look tired.”

I thanked her.

I remember that part clearly.

I remember lifting the glass.

I remember the sharp, unpleasant taste that seemed wrong for ordinary orange juice.

I almost put it down.

Then Vanessa asked me a question, and I turned toward her.

When I looked back at the glass, I drank the rest.

Not long afterward, the room began to tilt.

I tried to steady myself against the counter.

My hands felt strangely weak.

I remember calling Nolan's name.

I remember the floor coming toward me.

After that, everything became confused.

There were voices.

Someone was telling me to stay awake.

There was a hospital room and a nurse asking me questions I struggled to answer.

My blood pressure had fallen dangerously low.

The medical staff were concerned about the baby.

I remember looking at the monitor and trying to understand what the numbers meant.

I remember being more frightened for my daughter than for myself.

Nolan arrived later.

He looked worried in front of the doctors.

When we were alone, he told me I had been pushing myself too hard.

He said pregnancy could make people anxious.

He said I needed to stop imagining problems.

I wanted to believe him.

That was the worst part.

I wanted the man I loved to be right, so I began questioning my own memory.

Perhaps I had been exhausted.

Perhaps I had forgotten to eat.

Perhaps the juice had tasted strange because I was sick.

Nolan gave me explanations until I no longer trusted the questions.

Now Owen was standing in a courtroom, clutching his rabbit, saying the woman who had brought that drink had done something to me.

Judge Walsh glanced toward the court officer.

“I want this child protected from further questioning in this room.”

Nolan immediately leaned forward.

“This is a family matter. You chose to interrupt instead.”

“He doesn't understand what he's saying.”

“Then you should have no reason to fear a proper, professional interview.”

Vanessa turned toward Nolan.

Her face had gone pale.

I watched her hands. They were trembling in her lap.

She had laughed when I offered my husband everything.

Now she looked as if the floor beneath her chair had begun to crack.

The judge ordered the courtroom cleared so appropriate child-services professionals could speak with Owen in a protected setting.

Rachel touched my arm.

“Claire, stay with me.”

I nodded, although my attention remained on the boy near the door.

A court officer approached Owen and spoke to him quietly.

Owen did not move at first.

He looked toward me.

I held out my hand.

“You're safe, sweetheart.”

He walked to me.

When his small fingers closed around mine, I felt him shaking.

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

I wanted to know what he had seen, what Vanessa had said, and why Nolan had frightened him into believing that telling the truth would kill me.

Instead, I squeezed his hand once.

He followed the officer out of the courtroom, carrying Mr. Buttons beneath his arm.

I watched until the door closed.

Then I turned toward Nolan.

He was already looking at me.

There was no concern in his face.

Only anger.

He blamed me for what had happened, although I had not asked Owen to speak and had not known he would be brought into the courtroom.

That was Nolan's way.

If something threatened him, the person who exposed it became the problem.

Judge Walsh returned to the papers in front of her.

“The proposed settlement will remain suspended while these matters are examined.”

Nolan stood again.

“Your Honor, this has nothing to do with our property agreement.”

“It has everything to do with whether this court can accept the circumstances surrounding the agreement.”

“I have done nothing wrong.”

The judge looked at him for a long moment.

“That remains to be established.”

He sat down.

For the first time that morning, he looked less certain of himself.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I felt sick.

Because I knew there was another reason Nolan wanted the divorce completed quickly.

Owen.

Rachel and I were taken to a private room while the court arranged the next steps.

I lowered myself into a chair and pressed both hands against my stomach.

My daughter moved again.

I closed my eyes.

I had spent weeks telling myself that if I gave Nolan the house, the money, and the business, he would leave me alone.

I had believed the price of peace was surrender.

But peace was not what he wanted.

Rachel placed a glass of water on the table.

“Tell me why you agreed to those terms.”

I stared at the water.

“I want to get away from him.”

“That isn't the whole reason.”

I shook my head.

She waited.

Rachel had represented me long enough to know when I was hiding something.

I finally looked up.

“He said he would take Owen.”

She did not interrupt.

“He told me Owen wasn't really mine. He said that once the divorce was final, I wouldn't have any say in what happened to him.”

My voice cracked.

“I couldn't lose both of them.”

Rachel pulled her chair closer.

“Claire, listen to me. We need to document exactly what he said.”

I nodded.

“He told me I could keep the money or keep the boy. I couldn't have both.”

The words sounded uglier when I said them aloud.

Nolan had known what Owen meant to me.

He knew I had been there for every fever, every bad dream, every first day of school.

He knew I was the person Owen called when he was frightened.

And he had turned that bond into a weapon.

I had spent two weeks trying to decide whether my love for Owen was worth losing the financial security I had helped build.

Looking back, I was ashamed that he had made me believe I needed to choose.

But fear has a way of making a person accept choices that should never have been offered.

Rachel asked whether I had any evidence of his threats.

I told her about the messages.

I had saved them secretly because I had begun to realize that Nolan was careful about what he said when other people could hear him.

At 2:13 in the morning, two weeks before the hearing, he had sent me a message explaining my options.

I had stared at the screen until the words blurred.

You can have the boy in your life, or you can have the money. You don't get both.

There had been another message about signing over everything.

He had written that Owen needed to learn how easily people could be replaced.

The last message was shorter.

Remember what happened the last time you pushed me too far.

I had not shown those messages to anyone.

I had been afraid that if Nolan discovered I had kept them, he would make good on his threats.

Now I handed my phone to Rachel.

She read each message without speaking.

When she reached the last one, she looked up.

“These need to be preserved.”

“I know.”

“And Claire, don't contact him about them.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

I wanted to believe I was finally finished being afraid of him.

But I still jumped whenever a door closed too loudly.

I still looked at my phone before answering a call.

And I still wondered whether Nolan had found another way to take Owen from me.

A court officer knocked and informed us that the judge wanted to speak with me about the settlement.

I returned to the courtroom with Rachel beside me.

Nolan was still there.

Vanessa had not returned to her seat.

Judge Walsh asked me again whether I understood the financial terms I had accepted.

I told her I did.

She asked whether I had agreed freely.

This time, I did not give her the answer I had prepared.

“No, Your Honor. Not entirely.”

Nolan's head snapped toward me.

I kept my eyes on the judge.

“My husband threatened to separate me from the boy I have raised since he was a baby. He knew I would do almost anything to keep Owen in my life.”

The courtroom became very quiet.

Judge Walsh asked Rachel to submit the saved messages through the appropriate process.

Then she instructed the court staff to preserve the records relating to the hearing and the proposed settlement.

Nolan said nothing.

He did not need to.

I could see the anger in the way he held his jaw.

For seven years, I had mistaken his silence for self-control.

Now I understood that sometimes he was simply waiting for an opportunity to punish me later.

When the hearing paused, Rachel helped me stand.

My back ached.

My feet were swollen.

I was tired in a way that sleep could not fix.

But I was no longer willing to sign the papers just to make the fear stop.

That decision changed something.

Not because I suddenly became brave.

I was still frightened.

I was frightened for Owen, frightened for my unborn daughter, and frightened of what Nolan might do when he realized I was no longer cooperating.

But I had begun to understand that giving him everything would not make us safe.

It would only leave him with more power.

Rachel guided me toward the private family room where Owen was waiting under supervision.

I wanted to see him.

I needed to know that he was all right.

When I entered, he sat on a chair with Mr. Buttons in his lap.

His little shoes did not quite reach the floor.

He looked up immediately.

“Mommy Claire?”

I crossed the room as quickly as my body allowed.

He climbed into my arms.

I held him carefully, keeping one hand behind his back and the other around his shoulders.

“I'm here.”

He pressed his face against me.

“Are you going to go away?”

“No.”

“Even if Daddy is mad?”

I closed my eyes.

“Even then.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he touched my stomach.

“Is my baby sister still coming?”

I looked down at him.

“Yes, sweetheart.
