Nolan had taught him to be suspicious of strangers, although Nolan himself seemed to have no difficulty bringing unfamiliar people into our lives whenever it suited him.

I brushed a strand of hair away from Owen's forehead.

“What else did she say?”

He rubbed the blue stitching with his thumb.

“She said I should give Mr. Buttons to you if Daddy tried to take me away.”

I felt Rachel move closer.

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

Owen looked worried.

“Did I do something bad?”

“No, sweetheart.”

“Daddy said I shouldn't talk about her.”

I held him against me.

“You haven't done anything wrong.”

He seemed to consider that.

Then he rested his head on my shoulder.

I wanted to ask him everything.

I wanted to know what the woman looked like, how often he had seen her, and whether Nolan had been there when she repaired the rabbit.

But I could see that the questions were exhausting him.

So I stopped.

Rachel spoke quietly with the professionals responsible for Owen's interview. She explained what he had told us about the woman and the rabbit, without pressing him for more details.

I stayed beside him.

The blue thread kept catching my eye.

It was such a small thing.

A few stitches on an old toy.

Yet someone had repaired that seam carefully enough to hide something inside it, then made sure Owen knew when to give it to me.

Whoever that woman was, she had expected Nolan to separate us.

And she had found a way to leave me something he did not control.

Later that afternoon, the investigators examining the circumstances surrounding the hearing were informed about Owen's statement.

The rabbit was handled as potential evidence.

I watched as they examined the crooked seam and carefully opened the fabric.

Inside, they found a small memory card.

I stared at it.

I had bought that rabbit when Owen was little enough to sleep with one arm stretched above his head. He had carried it through illnesses, family trips, and the first nights he was afraid to sleep alone.

I had never imagined that it could contain anything more than stuffing.

The investigators secured the card and began examining its contents through the proper process.

Rachel stayed beside me while we waited.

I did not know what I expected to see.

A photograph, perhaps.

A message.

Some explanation of why the woman had approached Owen and warned him about his father.

When the video finally appeared, I forgot how to breathe.

A woman sat facing the camera.

She was thin.

Her face looked tired, and there was a strained alertness in her eyes that suggested she had spent a long time worrying about who might be watching her.

But I recognized her.

Not because I had known her well.

Because I had seen her photograph once, years earlier, before Nolan convinced me that she was gone.

Elena Brooks.

Owen's biological mother.

The woman Nolan had told me was dead.

For several seconds, I could only stare at the screen.

The room around me seemed to disappear.

Elena had dark hair in the photograph I remembered. The woman in the video looked older and more exhausted, but the resemblance was unmistakable.

She leaned toward the camera.

“If you're seeing this, Nolan has probably told you that I'm dead.”

Her voice was quiet.

She paused.

“I'm alive. And I never chose to leave my son.”

I covered my mouth.

Rachel reached for my hand.

I could not look away from the screen.

Elena explained that Nolan had discovered something about her family years earlier. Whatever he had found was valuable enough to change the way he treated her.

He had threatened to take Owen from her.

She believed that if she disappeared, Nolan would have no reason to hurt their son.

So she had hidden.

She had allowed Owen to grow up believing she was gone, while Nolan told me she had died.

I looked down at my hands.

For years, I had thought I was giving a motherless child a home.

I had believed I was honoring a woman who could no longer protect her son.

Instead, I had unknowingly become part of the arrangement that kept a living mother separated from her child.

The realization hurt in a way I could not easily explain.

I loved Owen.

That had never been a lie.

But I had loved him while believing a story that Nolan had constructed, and now I had to face how much of our family had been built on that deception.

I thought about the woman in the video.

How many birthdays had she missed?

How many nights had she spent wondering whether Owen was safe?

How many times had she wanted to reach for him but stopped because she feared what Nolan might do?

I thought about the blue thread.

She had found a way to tell her son that she loved him.

Even when she could not safely tell him everything.

When the video ended, I sat without moving.

Rachel did not try to comfort me with easy words.

She understood that there was nothing simple about what we had learned.

I had not lost Owen.

But the truth had changed the shape of everything I thought I knew.

I asked the investigators whether they knew where Elena was.

They told me they were examining the information available to them and working to establish the relevant facts.

I wanted to demand answers.

I wanted to know why she had not come to me sooner, why Nolan had been able to maintain his story for so many years, and what exactly he had discovered about her family.

But the video had not answered those questions.

It had only established one thing.

Elena was alive.

And Nolan had known it.

The investigators also wanted to understand how Elena had managed to contact Owen and arrange for the rabbit to reach me.

I thought about what Owen had said.

The woman had met him at Nolan's building.

She had repaired Mr. Buttons.

She had told him to give the rabbit to me if his father tried to separate us.

It was a desperate plan.

But it had worked.

I looked at the blue stitching again.

The rabbit had been sitting in Owen's arms in the courtroom while Nolan tried to silence him.

Nolan had believed he could control what his son said.

He had not realized that Owen was carrying evidence his father had never discovered.

That evening, my mother arrived.

Susan Parker had been trying to reach me throughout the day. When she entered the room, she looked first at my face, then at the investigators, then at Rachel.

She carried an old photograph in a protective sleeve.

“Claire,” she said, “I think you need to see this.”

I took the photograph.

It showed Nolan as a younger man standing beside a dark-haired woman.

The woman was holding a baby.

Owen.

I recognized the face from the video immediately.

Elena.

My mother sat down beside me.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she explained that Elena had contacted her seven years earlier, before Nolan and I married.

Elena had warned Susan that Nolan was dangerous.

She had tried to explain why she feared him and why she believed Owen was at risk.

My mother had been frightened.

But she had also been confused.

Nolan had responded by presenting documents that portrayed Elena as unstable. He had threatened legal action if Susan interfered with the wedding.

My mother had not known whom to believe.

She had been told that Elena was unreliable, that she was making accusations, and that her disappearance from Nolan's life was part of a painful family history.

Nolan had spoken with such confidence that Susan began to doubt the woman who had tried to warn her.

“I should have told you,” my mother whispered.

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you?”

She lowered her eyes.

“He threatened to make things difficult for everyone. I thought I was protecting you by staying out of it.”

I wanted to be angry with her.

Part of me was.

But I could also see how Nolan had worked to isolate the people around me. He had made every warning sound like an attack and every question sound like disloyalty.

He had not needed everyone to believe him completely.

He only needed them to doubt themselves long enough for him to remain in control.

My mother opened her bag and removed a newspaper clipping.

It concerned Elena's disappearance six years earlier.

I read the date twice.

Six years.

Three months after Nolan had told me Elena was dead.

The timing made my hands cold.

My mother watched me read.

“There was something else,” she said.

I looked up.

“Someone called me last week. A woman. She wouldn't give me her name.”

“What did she want?”

“She said Elena hadn't abandoned Owen.”

My mother swallowed.

“She said Elena had been taken away from her son.”

I looked back at the photograph.

Nolan had told me Elena was dead.

He had told my mother that Elena was unstable.

He had threatened her when she tried to intervene.

And all those years, Elena had been alive.

I could no longer tell myself that the lies were separate incidents or misunderstandings.

They were connected.

The messages Nolan had sent me, the orange juice in my kitchen, the hidden memory card, and the false story about Owen's mother all pointed toward a man who had spent years making other people believe whatever he needed them to believe.

I was eight months pregnant.

I had no desire to fight him over a house or a business.

But I could not ignore what we had discovered.

My daughter would soon enter the world, and Owen was already living with the consequences of Nolan's choices.

I thought of the settlement papers waiting for the judge's decision.

I had offered Nolan everything because I wanted to leave quietly.

Now I understood that leaving quietly might not be enough.

Not when the truth about Elena was still hidden.

Not when Owen was afraid to speak.

And not when Nolan had spent so long convincing everyone that he was the only person who knew what had happened.

My mother reached for my hand.

“I don't know how to make this right.”

Neither did I.

But I knew we could no longer pretend that nothing had happened.

The next morning, Rachel and I returned to the courthouse.

We had barely entered the building when we learned that Vanessa had been stopped before leaving the premises.

She had asked to speak with me.

I did not want to see her.

She had stood beside Nolan while I surrendered everything. She had laughed while I tried to explain why I wanted the marriage to end.

And six weeks earlier, she had brought me a glass of juice that nearly cost my unborn daughter her life.

Still, Rachel reminded me that any information Vanessa offered would need to be handled carefully.

I agreed to listen.

When Vanessa entered the private room, she looked nothing like the woman who had sat beside Nolan the previous day.

Her face was pale.

Her hands shook as she lowered herself into the chair opposite me.

She glanced toward the door, then leaned forward.

“Claire, you have to help me.”

I said nothing.

She looked at me with wide, frightened eyes.

“Nolan is going to kill me.”

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: His Mistress Finally Told Me Why She Was Afraid, and the Truth About the Missing Woman Was Worse Than I Expected

I asked Owen to tell me about the woman who had repaired his rabbit.
