6 – The Locked Black Suitcase Owen Remembered Led Back to the Warehouse Where Nolan Had Tried to Bury His Past

The next morning, Rachel asked me to come to her office.

She had been reviewing the information Owen had provided about the warehouse.

I sat across from her, one hand resting on my stomach.

“Do you remember him mentioning a suitcase?” she asked.

I nodded slowly.

Owen had spoken about a black suitcase that Nolan and Vanessa carried into the garage at night.

At the time, I had not understood why it mattered.

Children noticed strange things.

They also misunderstood ordinary things.

That was what I had told myself before the hearing.

Now I wished I had listened more carefully.

Rachel asked me to describe exactly what I remembered.

I told her about the garage, the late-night trips, and the way Nolan had moved belongings from his office.

I remembered asking about the boxes.

I remembered him saying that work was complicated and that I did not need to concern myself with it.

I also remembered something Owen had said.

He had heard Vanessa tell Nolan that if I discovered what was inside the suitcase, they would both be in trouble.

I had not known what to make of that statement.

I still did not.

Rachel explained that the suitcase might be relevant to the financial allegations or to the questions surrounding Elena.

But we could not assume what it contained.

The information needed to be passed to the investigators.

I agreed.

By then, the warehouse had become a place I could not stop thinking about.

It was where Vanessa claimed she had seen Elena.

It was where Nolan had confronted the woman he had told us was dead.

And it was where he had apparently stored documents he no longer wanted in our home.

I wondered how many times I had driven past that building without knowing what it held.

I wondered whether Nolan had believed that moving things out of sight would make the truth disappear.

The investigators were already examining the information Vanessa had provided.

Rachel made sure Owen's account of the suitcase was included without turning his recollections into conclusions they did not yet support.

I wanted to go to the warehouse myself.

I wanted to see the place where Elena had been found and demand to know what had happened there.

Rachel advised against acting independently.

If the investigators needed to examine the property, they would do so through the proper process.

I understood.

I also knew that my presence would not make the answers arrive any faster.

So I waited.

That afternoon, my mother visited me.

She brought the photograph of Elena again, along with the newspaper clipping about her disappearance.

I placed both on the table.

“Did you ever see Nolan with Elena after she disappeared?” I asked.

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

“Did he ever tell you anything that made you doubt his story?”

She thought about it.

“He always had an explanation.”

That sounded like Nolan.

He could make a terrible situation seem ordinary if he spoke long enough.

He could turn a warning into an accusation and a question into proof that someone did not trust him.

My mother told me that after Elena's warning, she had considered contacting her again.

But Nolan had threatened legal action, and the documents he presented had made Elena appear unreliable.

Susan had been afraid of interfering with my wedding and afraid of making a mistake.

She had chosen to remain silent.

“I thought you would hate me if I ruined your marriage over something I couldn't prove,” she said.

I looked at the photograph.

“I might have been angry.”

She nodded.

“But I would have wanted to know.”

My mother began to cry.

I reached across the table and held her hand.

I was angry that she had kept the warning from me.

But I was also beginning to understand how Nolan had maintained control for so long.

He had not needed to convince everyone that he was a good man.

He only needed each person to believe that challenging him would cause more harm than remaining quiet.

I had made the same calculation.

So had my mother.

So, apparently, had Elena.

And now Owen was learning that speaking honestly could frighten the people he loved.

I could not change the past.

But I could stop asking him to carry its secrets.

Later that day, Rachel informed me that the investigators had received additional information about the warehouse and the possible financial records stored there.

The matter was still under examination.

No one had confirmed the contents of the black suitcase.

No one had established the full circumstances of Elena's disappearance.

But the information had given the investigators specific places and events to examine rather than relying only on competing statements.

I held on to that distinction.

I wanted certainty.

I wanted the kind of answer that could close a door and let me move forward.

Instead, the truth was arriving in pieces.

A message.

A photograph.

A child's memory.

A repaired rabbit.

Each piece changed the meaning of the one before it.

That evening, I returned to the family room.

Owen was waiting with a book beside him.

He asked whether Mr. Buttons would come back.

I told him the rabbit was being kept safe while the investigators examined what had been found inside it.

He looked worried.

“I didn't mean to break him.”

“You didn't break him.”

“Then why did they open him?”

I chose my words carefully.

“Because someone put something important inside, and the grown-ups needed to understand what it was.”

He considered that.

“Was it the nice lady's message?”

“Yes.”

He looked down at his hands.

“Will she know you got it?”

I felt my eyes sting.

“I hope she will.”

Owen leaned against me.

Then he asked a question I had been dreading.

“Is she my real mommy?”

I did not answer immediately.

I had spent years telling him that I was his mother.

That was how he knew me.

I had never lied about loving him.

But I had not known the truth about Elena, and I could no longer protect him by pretending the truth was simple.

I held his hand.

“Elena is the woman who gave birth to you, sweetheart. And I am the person who has raised you and loves you.”

He looked at me.

“Can I have two mommies?”

I swallowed.

“You can love both of us.”

He thought about that for a while.

Then he rested his head against my shoulder.

I felt a mixture of relief and grief.

Relief that he had asked the question.

Grief that Nolan had made it necessary for a child to wonder whether loving one mother meant betraying another.

I could not tell Owen what his future relationship with Elena would look like.

I could not promise when they would see each other again.

But I could tell him that he did not have to choose between the people who loved him.

That night, I returned to my room and looked at the list of questions I had written.

The financial transactions were still being examined.

The warehouse remained important.

The black suitcase had not yet given us the answers Owen deserved.

And Elena's whereabouts were still uncertain.

I crossed nothing off the list.

Instead, I added one more question.

How could I help Owen understand the truth without making him feel responsible for it?

I did not have an answer.

But I knew the answer could not be another lie.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Spent Seven Years Believing I Was Owen’s Only Mother, Until I Realized the Truth Had Been Stolen From Us Both

The next morning, Rachel asked me to come to her office.
