You don't get both.

I read it slowly.

When Nolan sent that message, I had been sitting on the edge of our bed.

I remembered the lamp beside me.

I remembered the sound of the television downstairs.

I remembered staring at the words while trying to imagine what life would look like if Owen were no longer allowed to call me Mommy.

I had not thought about the house.

I had not thought about the savings.

I had not thought about whether the business was worth what Nolan claimed.

I had thought about a little boy waking in the night and calling for me.

That was why the threat had worked.

The next message was about signing everything over.

Nolan had written that Owen needed to learn how replaceable I was.

I felt my face grow hot as I read it.

Then I reached the final warning.

Remember what happened the last time you pushed me too far.

I looked up at Rachel.

“I thought if I did what he wanted, he would stop.”

Rachel listened without interrupting.

“I thought I could protect Owen by making myself less of a problem.”

I paused.

“I don't know how I convinced myself that was the right thing to do.”

“Because you were afraid of what he would do if you refused.”

She did not make it sound noble.

She did not tell me I had been foolish.

She simply named what had happened.

I had been afraid.

And I had made decisions under that fear.

The shame I felt about those decisions did not help me now.

What mattered was what I did next.

Rachel asked me to explain what I remembered about the last time Nolan had threatened me.

I told her what I could recall without filling in details I could not be certain about.

We kept the account factual.

I wanted the evidence to be reliable.

I did not want to make the mistake of believing that a strong feeling could substitute for proof.

That was one of the things Nolan had taught me without meaning to.

He had made me doubt everything I felt.

Now I was learning that I could acknowledge my fear and still examine the facts carefully.

Later, I received word that the investigators were continuing to examine the information about the warehouse and the financial records.

There was still no complete answer about the black suitcase.

There was still no confirmed account of Elena's whereabouts.

But the questions had not disappeared.

I found myself returning to one detail again and again.

Vanessa had said Nolan grabbed Elena by the arm and warned her to remain hidden.

Elena had answered that he could not keep her son from her forever.

Then Owen had called out to her.

That was the moment Nolan realized his son recognized his biological mother.

I wondered what happened in the seconds afterward.

Did Elena try to reach him?

Did Nolan pull her away?

Did Owen understand why the adults were behaving strangely?

Vanessa had not been able to tell us what happened next.

I could not invent an answer simply because I needed one.

So I wrote the question down and left it unanswered.

That evening, I visited Owen.

He had been asking more often when he could go home.

I wanted to give him a clear answer.

I could not.

Instead, I told him that the adults were working to make sure he was safe and that he would be told what he needed to know.

He looked at me for a long time.

“Will you be there?”

“Yes.”

“Even if Daddy says no?”

I took his hands.

“I will keep doing everything I can to be here for you.”

He seemed to accept that.

Then he asked whether the baby would come soon.

I smiled.

“Soon enough.”

He placed his hand against my stomach.

“I'm going to teach her how to draw.”

I laughed softly.

“I think she would like that.”

He looked pleased with himself.

For a moment, I could see the child he had been before the courtroom.

A boy who wanted to teach his baby sister things.

A boy who loved a stuffed rabbit.

A boy who needed adults to tell him the truth without making him carry their fear.

I held him close.

When I left, I felt the familiar weight of the coming days.

The divorce remained unresolved.

The financial allegations had not been fully established.

The questions about Elena were still open.

And I had to prepare for the birth of my daughter while trying to protect the child I had already raised.

I could not solve everything at once.

So I focused on the next necessary thing.

I spoke with Rachel about the settlement and made it clear that I would not sign away my claims simply to end the dispute.

I wanted the financial records examined.

I wanted the allegations about my signature addressed.

And I wanted the court to consider the threats Nolan had made when deciding whether the proposed agreement had been reached freely.

Rachel agreed that those issues needed to be handled through the appropriate process.

I did not ask for revenge.

I asked for the chance to make decisions based on the truth.

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the house again.

For years, I had imagined that house as the center of our family.

I remembered Owen learning to walk across the living room.

I remembered the marks on the wall that showed how much he had grown.

I remembered the spare room where I had begun preparing for the baby.

Those memories were real.

But they did not mean I had to remain attached to the place.

I could miss the life I thought I had without pretending it had been what I believed.

I could grieve the marriage without accepting Nolan's version of why it had failed.

And I could love Owen without treating his biological mother as an enemy.

That last realization surprised me.

I had feared that Elena's return would somehow erase my place in Owen's life.

But I knew what I had given him.

I had been there for his first steps, his fevers, his frightened nights, and the ordinary mornings when he wanted someone to sit beside him while he ate breakfast.

Those things did not disappear because the truth had changed.

They were part of his life.

So was Elena.

If she was able to return safely, Owen would need time to understand who she was and what had happened.

I would need time, too.

But I did not want him to grow up believing that love required someone to lose.

That was the lesson Nolan had tried to force on us.

It was not one I wanted to pass down.

I returned to the family room that afternoon and found Owen waiting beside the window.

He held a new sheet of paper.

There were three figures again, this time with a fourth one drawn in a small circle near the bottom.

“Who's that?” I asked.

“The baby.”

I smiled.

He pointed to the other figures.

“That's you. That's me. And that's the nice lady.”

I looked at the drawing.

Then I looked at Owen.

“That's a lot of people to fit into one picture.”

He nodded seriously.

“But there's room.”

I felt something loosen inside my chest.

There was room.

Not for every lie Nolan had told.

Not for the threats or the fear.

But for the truth, even when it was complicated.

For a boy who loved the woman who raised him and wanted to know the mother who had been kept away.

For a baby who would soon arrive in a family that was no longer the one I had imagined.

And for me, learning that protecting the people I loved did not mean disappearing from my own life.

I took Owen's hand.

We sat together beside the window, looking at his picture.

For once, I did not try to decide what would happen next.

I simply stayed where he needed me to be.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Woman Who Had Been Declared Dead Finally Agreed to Meet Me, but Her First Question Was About the Little Boy I Had Raised

I had once believed the worst part of betrayal was discovering that someone had lied to you.
