We still need to establish the circumstances.”

I closed my eyes.

I had watched Elena speak from the memory card inside Mr. Buttons.

I had heard her say that she had never chosen to leave her son.

Still, hearing that someone might have located her made the truth feel more real.

“What happens now?”

“If she agrees to cooperate, the investigators will arrange the next steps. You shouldn't try to contact her independently.”

I understood.

I wanted to see her.

I wanted to ask why she had stayed away and why she had trusted a stuffed rabbit to carry a message instead of contacting me directly.

But I also knew that Elena might be frightened.

Nolan had controlled the story about her for years.

She had every reason to be cautious about anyone connected to him.

Including me.

After the call, I went to the kitchen and made tea.

The house was quiet.

I looked at the counter where I had once placed the glass of orange juice.

I had stopped using that part of the counter for anything important.

It was an irrational habit, perhaps, but I could not make myself forget the feeling of my knees giving way.

I had not received a complete explanation of what happened that morning.

The circumstances were still being examined.

I would not invent one simply because the uncertainty hurt.

I carried my tea to the table and opened my notebook.

There were still questions about the financial transactions, the three companies, and the black suitcase.

There were also questions about Elena.

I wrote down the ones I wanted to ask if we ever met.

Why did Nolan tell everyone you were dead?

Why did he threaten you?

What happened at the warehouse?

And why did you trust me with Owen?

I stared at the final question.

Then I crossed it out.

I had no right to assume that Elena had trusted me.

She might have known nothing about the woman Nolan had married.

She might have believed I was helping him keep Owen away from her.

If she had spent years watching her son grow up from a distance, the sight of me might have hurt more than it comforted her.

I could not expect her to understand my intentions before she understood the truth.

That afternoon, Rachel contacted me again.

Elena had agreed to speak with the investigators.

She had also agreed to a meeting with me, provided it took place in a controlled setting and did not involve Nolan.

I read Rachel's message several times.

My first reaction was relief.

My second was fear.

I had imagined this moment so often that I had forgotten what it would actually require.

I would be sitting across from a woman whose child I had raised.

I would be looking at someone who had been told, in one way or another, that she could not safely be his mother.

I would have to face the fact that I had loved Owen while believing a lie about the woman who gave birth to him.

I did not know whether Elena would blame me.

I did not know whether I would be able to explain myself without sounding as if I were asking her to forgive me for something I had not understood.

But I agreed to meet her.

The meeting was arranged for the following afternoon.

I barely slept that night.

Owen noticed my silence the next morning.

He sat beside me at breakfast, turning his spoon around in his cereal.

“Are you going somewhere?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Where?”

“To meet someone who may know more about your mommy.”

He stopped moving his spoon.

“Is it the nice lady?”

I nodded.

He looked down at his cereal.

“Will you tell her I have the rabbit?”

“I will tell her that Mr. Buttons is safe.”

He seemed relieved.

Then he asked whether she knew about the baby.

“I don't know,” I answered. “But I can tell her.”

He considered that.

“Tell her the baby kicks when I talk.”

I smiled.

“I will.”

He returned to his breakfast.

I watched him for a moment, thinking about how easily he offered Elena a place in the life he had imagined.

He was not trying to choose between us.

He was trying to understand why there had ever been a choice.

The next afternoon, Rachel accompanied me to the meeting.

It took place in a quiet room with a table, four chairs, and a window overlooking a small courtyard.

There were no photographs on the walls.

No decorations.

Nothing that might make the room feel more personal than it was.

I sat with my hands folded in my lap.

Rachel remained beside me.

When the door opened, I stood.

Elena entered slowly.

She looked thinner than she had in the video.

Her dark hair was tied back, and there were faint lines around her eyes that made her look older than I had expected.

She stopped when she saw me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked at my stomach.

“How far along are you?”

“Almost eight months.”

She nodded.

Her eyes moved back to my face.

“Is Owen safe?”

That was her first question.

Not about Nolan.

Not about the money.

Not about the years she had lost.

She wanted to know whether her son was safe.

I felt my throat tighten.

“He is being cared for. The court and the appropriate professionals are involved, and I'm doing everything I can to protect him.”

Elena looked at me carefully.

“Does he know who I am?”

“He knows you are the woman who gave birth to him. He knows you love him.”

She closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, they were wet.

“Does he hate me?”

“No.”

I answered too quickly.

I softened my voice.

“He has questions. He's confused about why you haven't been there. But he doesn't hate you.”

Elena sat down.

I sat opposite her.

For a while, we spoke about Owen.

She asked whether he still slept with Mr. Buttons.

I told her about the rabbit, the blue stitching, and the memory card.

She listened without interrupting.

When I explained that Owen had carried the rabbit into the courtroom, she pressed both hands against her mouth.

“He did exactly what I asked him to do.”

Her voice broke.

“I never wanted him involved in any of this.”

“Neither did I.”

She looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something other than fear in her expression.

It was not trust.

But it was recognition.

We were two women who had been placed in a situation neither of us had chosen.

The difference was that Elena had known Nolan was dangerous long before I understood what he was capable of.

She told me that she had met Nolan years earlier, when he was charming and attentive.

He had seemed to understand her ambitions.

He had offered to help her with a business opportunity involving her family's property.

At first, she believed he wanted to build something with her.

Then she discovered that he had been making promises to different people about the same assets.

She confronted him.

He responded by telling her that she did not understand the business.

When she persisted, he began making threats.

She said the worst of them concerned Owen.

Nolan told her that if she tried to leave with their son, he would make sure she never saw him again.

She had believed him.

At the time, she had very little money and few people she could trust.

She had tried to seek help, but Nolan had already begun portraying her as unstable.

Documents appeared that she said she had never signed.

Statements were repeated that she said were untrue.

The more she tried to defend herself, the more people treated her as someone who could not be trusted.

Eventually, she disappeared.

She had believed that removing herself from Nolan's immediate reach would give Owen a chance at a safer life.

But she had not understood that Nolan would use her absence to rewrite their entire history.

“He told you I was dead,” she said.

I nodded.

“He told me you had died before I met you.”

Elena stared at the table.

“I thought he would tell Owen that I abandoned him. I never imagined he would say I was dead.”

I wanted to ask why she had not contacted me sooner.

The question was sitting in my mind, sharp and insistent.

But I waited.

Elena explained that she had eventually learned I was raising Owen.

At first, she had been relieved.

She believed he had someone who loved him.

Then she learned more about Nolan's behavior.

She began to worry that I was being manipulated in the same way she had been.

She had tried to find a safe way to reach me.

But she feared that contacting me directly would allow Nolan to discover where she was.

So she watched from a distance whenever she could.

I thought about the warehouse.

“You saw Owen there.”

She nodded.

“I hadn't planned to approach him that day. I only wanted to know whether he was all right.”

“What happened?”

Elena looked down at her hands.

“He saw me before I could leave.”

She described how he had called out to her.

She had wanted to run to him.

Instead, she had looked toward Nolan and understood that the moment she had feared for years had arrived.

Owen knew who she was.

And Nolan knew that Owen knew.

Elena had not been able to take her son away that day.

She had not even been able to explain herself.

She had only managed to speak to him briefly before Nolan intervened.

She told Owen that she loved him.

She repaired Mr. Buttons while he watched.

Then she arranged the hidden message.

“I thought if Nolan tried to take Owen from you, you might finally see what he was doing.”

I looked at her.

“You knew about the settlement?”

“I knew he was trying to make you sign something. I didn't know all the details.”

She paused.

“I was afraid that if you signed everything away, he would have even more control over you.”

I remembered the papers on the courtroom table.

I remembered Nolan telling me that I could keep Owen or the money, but not both.

Elena had not known every detail.

But she had recognized the pattern.

She had seen the same kind of control that I was only beginning to understand.

I asked her whether she knew what was in the black suitcase.

Her expression changed.

She looked toward Rachel.

Then she answered carefully.

“I know Nolan kept documents he did not want anyone to find. I cannot tell you what is inside that suitcase because I never saw it opened.”

I appreciated the honesty.

There were already too many people offering certainty where they had none.

We spoke for nearly an hour.

Elena did not ask me to give up my relationship with Owen.

She did not tell me that I had stolen her place.

She did not demand that I explain why I had believed Nolan.

Instead, she asked whether Owen was happy.

I told her about his drawings.

I told her about the blue door and the way he had started making room for his baby sister in every picture.

I told her he wanted to teach the baby how to draw.

Elena smiled through her tears.

“That sounds like him.”

I wondered how many memories she had carried alone.

I wondered whether she had spent years imagining the person he would become.

When the meeting ended, Elena stood.

“I don't know what happens now,” she said.

“Neither do I.”

She looked at me.

“But I don't want him to lose you because of me.”

I shook my head.

“He doesn't have to lose either of us.”

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

We did not hug.

We did not promise to become friends.

There was too much pain and too much uncertainty for either of those things.

But when Elena left the room, I no longer thought of her as a woman whose existence threatened my family.

She was Owen's mother.

She was a woman who had been frightened into disappearing.

And she was finally being given a chance to tell her own story.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Elena Told Me What Nolan Had Done Before Our Wedding, I Realized the Lies Had Started Long Before I Became His Wife

The morning after Owen drew his picture, Rachel called me before breakfast.
