Executives approve invoices all the time.”

“Correct.”

He remained calm.

“Which is why the investigators examined the supporting documentation, the timing the loudest person in the room whenever I challenged something he wanted to believe.

Now he was silent.

Mercer explained that the invoices had changed shortly after compliance inquiries were made.

Some of the alterations had occurred only minutes after questions were raised.

The digital records connected the changes to a company laptop.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Someone could have used my account.”

“That possibility was examined.”

“You can't prove I knew drink.

A woman near the dessert table quietly moved away.

Vanessa noticed every small movement.

She had spent years learning how to read a room when it benefited a long moment.

The truth was more complicated than she wanted it to be.

I had wanted the investigation to be accurate.

I had wanted the people responsible for the missing money to be identified.

I had wanted the process to be fair enough that even my sister could not claim she had been condemned because of a family dispute.

I had not wanted to stand at her wedding and watch her career collapse.

But I had also stopped pretending that protecting her reputation was more important than finding the truth.

Those were different things.

“I didn't choose the evidence,” I said.

She looked away.

Mercer continued speaking to her in measured sentences.

Her employment had been terminated under the authority granted by the board.

The company would communicate with her through counsel.

She was not to access company systems or remove records.

She would be given the formal documentation and an opportunity to respond.

Vanessa seemed to hear only one part.

“You can't take my career away.”

“Your employment has already ended,” Mercer replied.

Her eyes filled with anger.

Then she remembered something.

She pulled her phone from a small purse and began scrolling through her messages.

“I haven't received anything.”

“Outside counsel sent the notice earlier today,” Mercer said.

She searched her inbox.

Her thumb moved faster.

Then she stopped.

I could see the screen reflected in the glass behind her.

She had found it.

Whatever the notice said, it changed her expression before she finished reading.

Her lips parted.

She scrolled upward, then downward, as if the message might become something different if she read it again.

My mother stepped closer.

“Vanessa?”

My sister did not answer.

My father reached for her shoulder.

“What does it say?”

She turned the phone away from him.

For several seconds, she stood completely still.

The music continued somewhere behind us, but nobody in our little circle seemed to hear it.

I watched her face.

There was disbelief first.

Then calculation.

Then fear.

She looked up at Mercer.

“You can't be serious.”

“I am.”

She shook her head slowly.

“This is my wedding day.”

He did not argue with her about that.

Perhaps there was nothing to argue about.

The date on the notice had not changed because she was getting married.

The transactions had not disappeared because she had chosen a ballroom full of guests.

The evidence had not become less important because her dress was expensive and her family expected her to be celebrated.

I looked at the folded disclosure inside my handbag.

Four months earlier, I had signed it because I knew what my family might say if the investigation led to Vanessa.

I had expected accusations.

I had expected them to call me jealous.

I had expected my parents to insist that blood mattered more than procedure.

What I had not expected was how little I would feel the need to defend myself once the truth had been independently examined.

I had done my part.

Other people had done theirs.

Now Vanessa had to face the results.

She lifted her head and looked directly at me.

“You should have told me.”

I felt a strange, tired sadness.

She had spent the evening telling strangers who I was.

She had not once asked what I actually did.

And now, when the facts had become impossible to ignore, she wanted to know why I had not warned her.

I answered honestly.

“I wasn't supposed to discuss a confidential investigation with you.”

She stared at me.

Then her expression hardened again.

“So you knew.”

“I knew there were transactions that needed examination.
