It's good to meet you.”

Rebecca looked at his hand, then at him.

“I'm familiar with your name.”

She didn't shake it.

Andrew slowly lowered his arm.

I took my usual seat at the head of the table.

Jessica sat beside her husband, placing the portfolio in front of her.

Patricia chose the chair closest to the window.

She set her calculator beside her purse.

Nobody asked how I had slept.

Nobody asked whether I had eaten breakfast.

Rebecca opened her folder.

“Before we begin, I want to make one thing clear. This meeting concerns William's estate arrangements and his wishes for his property. It isn't a negotiation over money.”

Andrew leaned back.

“That's fine. I had not made these arrangements overnight, and I had not made them simply because Andrew had failed to call.

The money from the company sale had given me options.

It had also forced me to think seriously about what I wanted the rest of my life to mean.

I had spent decades building a business.

I knew what could happen when somebody had the opportunity to learn a trade but lacked the money to pursue it.

I had seen young workers arrive with little experience and become skilled technicians through patience, instruction, and hard work.

Some of the best people I had ever employed had started with almost nothing.

I wanted to help others find that same opportunity.

So I had decided that most of my remaining assets would eventually support a foundation dedicated to technical education and apprenticeships.

Other funds would establish scholarships for students facing financial disadvantages.

The details were in Rebecca's documents.

Nothing about the plan prevented me from living comfortably or changing my mind where the trust allowed it.

It simply reflected what I wanted to do with the wealth I had earned.

When Rebecca finished, the room was quiet.

Andrew stared at the papers.

Then he laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

“You're serious?”

“Yes,” I said.

“You're planning to give most of your money to a foundation?”

“To education and training.”

“Instead of your own son?”

I looked at him.

“You haven't been my son in any practical sense for thirteen years.”

His face reddened.

“That's not fair.”

I wanted to ask which part he thought was unfair.

The unanswered Christmas cards?

The birthdays I spent alone?

The funeral he had missed?

Instead, I let the silence sit between us.

Jessica closed her portfolio.

“This is unbelievable.”

I turned toward her.

“What exactly did you expect?”

She stared at me.

“We expected you to help your family.”

“You mean to give you $600,000, transfer my house, and establish accounts for the children?”

“Yes. You're in a position to do that.”

Her answer came without hesitation.

I finally understood that she didn't see the list as a request.

She saw it as a reasonable claim against something she believed already belonged to them.

Rebecca interrupted before I could respond.

“William is entitled to decide how his assets are used. The documents were prepared properly, and he has undergone an independent evaluation of his decision-making capacity.”

Patricia sat straighter.

“An evaluation? Why would he need that?”

“To establish that his decisions are informed and voluntary.”

“Or because somebody has been telling him what to do?”

Rebecca didn't change her expression.

“No one has directed William to make these choices.”

I watched Patricia search my face for evidence that I had been persuaded by someone else.

She didn't find it.

I had made the decision myself.

I had thought about it during quiet evenings, on walks through the neighborhood, and in the office where I had spent so much of my adult life.

I had considered Andrew's place in my future.

I had considered the grandchildren I had never met.

I had even considered whether I was being too harsh.

There had been nights when I wondered whether leaving money to my son might somehow repair the damage between us.

But I kept returning to the same question.

If Andrew had never learned about the sale, would he have come back?

Nobody at the table could answer that question.

I suspected we all knew the answer anyway.

Andrew pushed the documents away.

“So that's it? You're giving everything away?”

“Not everything.”

“Most of it.”

“Most of my remaining estate, as outlined in the plan.”

He shook his head.

“You're going to leave your own family with nothing.”

I looked at Jessica's list.

“You asked for a house you don't own, money you haven't earned, and a share of a sale you had nothing to do with.”

Andrew's chair scraped against the floor.

“I am your son!”

The words struck the room harder than he intended.

For one foolish second, I heard the little boy who used to call for me when he woke from a nightmare.

Then I remembered the letter.

I had not brought it to the table yet.

It remained inside the old envelope Rebecca had placed in her folder.

I looked at Andrew and tried to see whether any part of him remembered what he had written.

“You're right,” I said. “You are my son.”

His expression softened slightly.

“But that doesn't mean you can arrive after thirteen years and decide what I owe you.”

Jessica stood.

“We should challenge this.”

Rebecca looked up at her.

“You may seek independent legal advice if you wish.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I do.
