at Rebecca.

She opened another section of the folder.

“There is one additional matter William would like to clarify.”

Andrew's head lifted.

“What now?”

Rebecca removed several pages and laid them on the table.

The first page was a copy of a business loan agreement.

The second contained a signature Andrew knew well.

His own.

Jessica leaned closer.

“What is that?”

Rebecca placed a finger beside the signature.

“An agreement connected to Andrew's former equipment business.”

Andrew stared at the pages.

I watched his expression change.

It happened quickly, but I saw it.

The anger disappeared.

Something closer to fear took its place.

Thirteen years earlier, Andrew had approached me about financing his company.

He wanted to purchase equipment and expand his operations.

He had spoken confidently about the future.

He believed the business would grow quickly, and he wanted me to guarantee an $85,000 loan.

I had been cautious.

I asked about the numbers.

I asked what would happen if the business struggled.

Andrew assured me that he understood the risks and would take responsibility for the debt.

After several discussions, I agreed to guarantee the loan.

I did it because I wanted him to have a chance.

I also made certain there was a written agreement concerning his obligation to reimburse me if I had to pay the lender.

Andrew signed it.

For a while, I believed we had handled the matter responsibly.

Then the business failed.

The lender came after me under the guarantee.

I had to settle the outstanding amount to protect my own financial standing.

It was a painful expense, but I paid it.

Andrew promised he would repay me.

He acknowledged the obligation in writing.

Then he disappeared from my life.

For years, I had said very little about the money.

I wasn't interested in dragging my son through a legal battle simply because he had failed.

But I wasn't going to let him tell his wife that I had refused to help him, either.

Jessica picked up the first page.

Her eyes moved from the amount to the signature.

Then she looked at Andrew.

“What is this?”

He didn't answer.

She looked back at the document.

“Why did your father guarantee a loan for you?”

I spoke before Andrew could find an explanation.

“Because he asked me to.”

Jessica's face tightened.

“You told me he refused to help with your business.”

“I didn't say company fail because he didn't want to see you succeed.”

Andrew remained silent.

Patricia turned toward him.

“Andrew?”

He pressed his lips together.

The room had changed.

Until that moment, he had been able to present himself as a son whose father had abandoned him.

The papers made that story harder to maintain.

I hadn't simply offered advice and then walked away.

I had put my own financial security behind his business.

When the venture failed, I had carried the consequences.

And when I needed honesty from my son, I received silence.

Rebecca pointed to the reimbursement agreement.

“Andrew acknowledged his obligation to repay the amount William covered.”

Jessica read the document more carefully.

“He signed this?”

“Yes,” Rebecca said.

“And these other
