I asked the young man.

"Three days, sir."

"And how many times did you have to start over?"

He smiled a little.

"Four."

I laughed.

"Then you probably learned more than you would have if you'd gotten it right the first time."

He looked at his work again, as if he had never considered that possibility.

I thought about Andrew.

There had been a time when I believed every mistake could be corrected if a father simply worked hard enough.

I had spent years trying to make things right for him.

I had paid bills, guaranteed loans, offered advice, and swallowed words that should have been spoken.

I had mistaken helping my son for preventing him from experiencing consequences.

The distinction had cost both of us something.

I drove home that afternoon with the windows cracked and the autumn air moving through the car.

Margaret's blue tie hung in my closet at home, folded over the wooden hanger where I had left it after the ceremony.

I could still remember her telling me the color suited me.

She had said it whenever I wore it to an important meeting.

I sometimes caught myself turning toward the empty passenger seat to tell her about something I had seen.

Then I remembered.

The silence in the car would return, and I would keep driving.

I did not stop missing her.

I simply stopped expecting grief to follow a schedule.

By then, the foundation had begun receiving letters from students who wanted to know whether they could apply for the next round of scholarships.

Some had parents who could help them.

Others had nobody who understood why a technical education mattered.

One young woman wrote that her family wanted her to take a job immediately rather than train as an electrician.

She had saved what she could from working weekends, but she still could not cover the tuition and tools.

I read her letter twice.

Then I placed it beside the other applications.

We would review her qualifications fairly.

That was the promise I had made to myself when I created the foundation.

It would not be a place where a person's family name mattered more than the work they were willing to do.

It would not be a way for me to reward people who reminded me of Andrew.

And it would never become a substitute for the son I had lost.

I wanted the money to do good because money was all too capable of doing harm when people treated it as proof of love.

As the days passed, I heard small pieces of news about Andrew through the ordinary channels that connect people who have known each other for years.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that gave me a clear picture of his life.

I did not ask anyone to investigate him, and I did not call his old friends to gather information.

If he wanted me to know something, he could tell me himself.

That was a difficult boundary to keep.

Some evenings, I would sit at the kitchen table with the yellow envelope still in the drawer nearby and wonder whether I had been too hard on him.

Then I would remember the four suitcases in my hallway.

I would remember Jessica's list of demands and Patricia's certainty that a lifetime of work had somehow made me responsible for financing their comfort.

I would remember Andrew standing in front of me, talking about his share as though my life had been a business account opened for his future use.

I could understand his disappointment without agreeing with his demands.

I could love him without giving him the keys to my house.

Those were simple sentences.

Living by them was harder.

One evening, I took Margaret's photograph from the mantel and sat with it in my hands.

She was smiling in the picture, her head turned slightly toward the camera.

I had always loved that smile because it made ordinary rooms seem warmer.

"I don't know how this ends," I told her.

The words sounded foolish in an empty house.

I said them anyway.

"I don't know whether he'll ever understand."

I put the photograph back where it belonged.

For the first time in a long while, I did not ask her to help me find an answer.

I had to live with the one I already knew.

I could leave the door open.

I could not spend every day standing in it.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When His Marriage Began to Break, I Had to Decide Whether a Father’s Love Meant Rescuing Him Again

The weeks after the scholarship ceremony passed without a word from Andrew.
