head.

“You brought me into it when you gave me a card without explaining whose account it belonged to.”

That sentence changed the atmosphere in the farmyard.

Until then, my husband had been treating the problem as though I had suddenly decided to embarrass him.

Now his own mother was asking questions he couldn't answer for her.

He tried to dismiss the situation.

The cards were convenient, he said.

Everybody was making too much of it.

I looked at him.

“Then tell us why you never told me they were he had repeatedly told me to reduce our household spending while expenses were accumulating on those cards.

Still, he didn't give me a direct answer.

The silence was more revealing than his complaints had been.

My mother-in-law looked from him to me.

I could almost see her remembering the times she had used the card.

Perhaps she was thinking about the hotel stays.

Perhaps she was remembering restaurant bills or other purchases.

I couldn't know what was going through her mind.

But I could see that the amount arrangement.

That mattered.

I didn't want to make an innocent person responsible for a decision she hadn't knowingly made.

At the same time, I wasn't going to let the possibility that his relatives had been misled erase my husband's responsibility.

I turned toward his sister.

“Did you know the account belonged to me?”

She hesitated.

Before she could answer, my husband spoke.

“She doesn't need to answer that.”

His mother turned toward him.

“Stop answering questions for other people.”

He looked at her.

She didn't look away.

The children were nearby.

They had stopped working long enough to notice the adults gathered in the yard.

My father continued loading corn into the pickup, but I knew he was aware of the tension.

I didn't want the children caught in the middle of it.

But I also knew that sending everyone away wouldn't make the problem disappear.

My husband stepped closer to me.

“Can we please talk privately?”

I looked at him.

I had heard that request before.

I knew how easily a private conversation could become another argument about my tone, my timing, or my refusal to cooperate.

I wasn't afraid to speak to him alone.

I simply didn't want the facts separated into different versions before everyone understood what had happened.

His mother folded her arms.

“Why didn't you tell me the account was hers?”

He answered that he hadn't thought the details mattered.

She looked at him as though she couldn't believe he had said it.

“They mattered to your wife.”

He opened his mouth.

Then he closed it again.

I stood there holding the card, thinking about the screen I had stared at the night before.

Two names.

Eleven months.

$18,731.

The numbers had seemed cold when I first read them.

Now they had brought us all into the same conversation.

And for the first time, my husband could not decide which parts of that conversation everyone was allowed to hear.

Source: <a
