Because that is what happened before. I was trying to stretch the grocery money while you were spending from the account.”

He looked down at the notebook.

“I don't want that to happen again.”

“Then the plan has to begin with our actual income and necessary bills.”

We listed the household expenses first.

Food.

Electricity.

Water.

Transportation.

School supplies.

The children's shoes and clothing.

The payments already committed to other bills.

We did not treat savings as money that could be emptied without consequence.

We also did not count money he hoped to earn but had not yet received.

Only after the necessary expenses were written down did we discuss the repayment amount.

It was smaller than he had wanted to promise.

It was also an amount we could begin paying without pretending the household had more money than it did.

“We'll review it each month,” I said. “If your income changes, we can review the amount. But I won't accept another promise based on money that doesn't exist.”

He wrote that down.

We also agreed that the account would remain under my control.

No additional cards would be used.

No new cardholders would be added.

Any request to use shared money for a family expense would be discussed before the spending happened.

Those were not punishments.

They were basic rules that should have existed before.

My husband signed the written plan.

I signed it too, not because I was taking responsibility for the charges, but because we both needed a clear record of what we had agreed to do next.

He asked whether that meant I was willing to stay married.

I put the pen down.

“It means I'm willing to see whether you can be honest and consistent.”

His face tightened.

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the answer I have right now.”

He sat very still.

“I love you,” he said.

“I loved you when I was buying groceries and wondering how to afford the children's shoes. I loved you when you were away on that vacation. My love didn't stop you from hiding the account.”

He looked at the signed page.

“I know.”

“I need you to understand that love isn't a repayment plan. It isn't proof that I can trust you again.”

He nodded slowly.

I told him that I needed time to decide what our marriage could become.

I would not promise him that everything would return to the way it had been.

The way it had been was part of the problem.

He asked if we could speak to a marriage counselor.

I said I would consider it, provided that he didn't treat counseling as a shortcut around the financial truth.

He agreed.

We also discussed how to protect the children from the conflict.

They would not be asked to take sides.

They would not be told that their grandmother or aunt had caused the problem.

They would not be used to carry messages between us.

If they asked why their father had returned from the vacation early, we would give them an honest, age-appropriate answer without sharing adult financial details.

My husband agreed to that too.

The next morning, I bought the children the shoes they had needed.

I compared prices before choosing them.

I checked the size twice.

The purchase was small compared with the account total, but it mattered to me.

For months, I had been telling myself to wait.

I had treated every ordinary need as something that might have to be postponed.

I wasn't going to keep doing that while my husband learned how to take responsibility.

When I brought the shoes home, the children tried them on in the hallway.

One of them ran across the room to test the soles.

The other asked if she could wear hers to help Grandpa with the corn.

I laughed despite myself.

“Not in the mud today.”

My husband watched from the kitchen doorway.

He didn't try to turn the moment into proof that things were fixed.

He simply helped put the old shoes away.

For once, he understood that a useful action did not need an announcement.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Life We Could Actually Afford

We didn't settle everything in one conversation.
