Don't argue with him about the facts over the phone. If he has something relevant to say, ask him to put it in writing."

I looked at the disputed power of attorney on my screen.

"Do you think he expected me not to find out?"

"I can't tell you what he expected. I can tell you that the transaction cannot move forward on disputed authority without the issue being addressed."

That was enough for now.

I thanked her and returned to my work.

For the next several hours, I tried to concentrate on my duties.

I answered emails.

I reviewed documents.

I attended a meeting and took notes.

Every time my phone vibrated, I felt the same small tightening in my stomach.

I hated that.

I hated that a call from my own family could make an ordinary morning feel like something I needed to prepare for.

Around midday, my mother sent a message.

She asked whether I could call her when I had time.

I read it several times.

Then I typed a reply.

I told her I was available that evening, but I wanted our conversation to stay focused on what had happened.

She answered with a single sentence.

"I don't know how we got here."

I didn't respond.

I had asked myself the same question.

The difference was that I was finally willing to look at the choices that had brought us here.

Three years earlier, I had agreed to let my mother and Victor occupy the cabin.

I had done it because they needed somewhere to live.

I had accepted that they needed time to recover financially.

I had not required them to leave after a fixed number of months, and I had allowed the arrangement to continue.

Those decisions were mine.

I could admit that without accepting responsibility for the sale.

I could have set firmer limits.

I could have asked for a clearer plan.

I could have stopped covering certain expenses when it became obvious that temporary was turning into permanent.

But I had not signed away the cabin.

I had not authorized Victor to sell it.

And I had not signed the document he submitted.

Those facts remained unchanged.

That evening, I called my mother.

She answered quickly.

"Thank you for calling."

I sat at my desk and placed a glass of water beside the laptop.

"Mom, I need to understand what happened."

"I know."

"Did you agree to the sale before Victor called me?"

She hesitated.

"We talked about it."

"Who talked about it?"

"Victor and I."

I waited.

She began explaining that the bills had become difficult to manage.

She said Victor believed selling the cabin would give them enough money to start over somewhere else.

I listened without interrupting.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

"Did you understand that the cabin belonged to me?"

"Of course I did."

"Did you understand that the agreement prohibited you and Victor from selling it?"

"Yes."

Her answer was so quiet that I almost asked her to repeat it.

Instead, I sat very still.

"Then why did you let him go ahead?"

"I thought we could work something out."

"With whom? The buyers?"

"I don't know, Elena."

I looked at the photograph beside my laptop.

My father was standing on the porch, with one hand resting on the railing.

I had spent years assuming that my mother would always understand why that place mattered to me.

Now I wondered whether she understood and had simply decided that her own problems mattered more.

"I need you to tell me what you knew about the power of attorney," I said.

"I didn't prepare it."

"That isn't what I asked."

She began crying again.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I wanted to take back the question.

I wanted to tell her that it didn't matter, that we could discuss everything later, that she didn't have to explain herself while she was upset.

Those were the things I usually said.

They were also the things that had kept our conversations from going anywhere.

I let the silence remain.

Finally, she spoke.

"Victor said he had the paperwork handled."

"What paperwork?"

"I don't know all the details."

"Did you see the document with my signature?"

She took a shaky breath.

"I can't remember exactly."

I wanted to believe her.

I also wanted to believe that she would have stopped the sale if she had understood what was happening.

But I couldn't make those beliefs into facts.

"Mom, I need you to be honest with me, even if the answer is difficult."

"I am trying."

"I know."

We stayed on the phone a little longer.

She said she was frightened about what would happen next.

She said she didn't know where she and Victor would go if they lost the cabin.

I understood the fear.

I had never wanted my mother to become homeless.

I had agreed to let her live in the cabin because I wanted to give her stability.

But I could not solve the problem by pretending the ownership agreement no longer existed.

"I want you to have somewhere safe to live," I told her. "That doesn't mean I can let the sale go forward."

She didn't answer.

When the call ended, I sat alone for a while.

I had not learned everything I needed to know.

But I had learned that my mother understood the cabin belonged to me and knew there were restrictions on the sale.

That mattered.

It did not answer every question about the disputed document.

It did not tell me who had prepared it or what Victor had said to the people involved.

Still, it made one thing harder to ignore.

This had not begun with a simple misunderstanding about ownership.

The rules had been clear.

And my family had chosen to proceed as though those rules could be set aside.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: My Mother Knew Whose Name Was on the Deed, but the Question I Asked Her Next Was the One She Could Not Answer

The next morning, I woke before my alarm.
