Everything all right?"

"Not exactly."

I told him about Victor's call, the proposed sale, and the power of attorney.

I explained that Sloane had stopped the closing while the authority documents were disputed.

Bear listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he took a moment before answering.

"Your dad would have wanted you to protect that place."

I looked down at my hands.

"I keep wondering whether I should have handled the living arrangement differently."

"Maybe you could have."

His answer surprised me.

He continued before I could speak.

"That doesn't mean somebody else gets to sell your property."

I let out a breath.

I had expected reassurance.

Instead, he had given me something more useful.

I could acknowledge my mistakes without making them an excuse for someone else's choices.

"I should have set a clearer timeline," I said.

"Maybe. But you helped them because they needed help."

"I thought they would respect the agreement."

"I know."

There was a quiet stretch on the line.

Then Bear asked whether I had been back to the cabin recently.

I told him I hadn't.

I hadn't been able to arrange a visit, and after seeing the listing photographs, I wasn't sure I could bear to walk through the house while everything remained unsettled.

Bear understood.

He didn't tell me to stop worrying.

He didn't tell me to forgive anyone.

He simply reminded me that I didn't have to decide the future of every relationship in one afternoon.

After we hung up, I returned to the photograph of my father.

I remembered the crooked blue lettering on the cake Bear had brought when I was accepted to West Point.

PROUD OF YOU, ELENA.

It had been such a small gesture.

But Bear had shown up because he understood that the moment mattered.

He had not asked me to prove that I deserved his support.

I wondered how many times I had accepted the opposite from my own family.

That evening, my mother called again.

I answered.

She sounded exhausted.

"Victor says you won't talk to him."

"I've asked him to explain the document. He hasn't done that."

"He says you're treating him like a criminal."

"I am asking him to explain a document that claims I gave him authority I never gave him."

"He thinks you're trying to ruin his life."

I stared at the glass of water on my desk.

"I didn't ask him to sell my house."

She sighed.

"Elena, I don't know how to make this right."

I believed that part.

But I couldn't do it for her.

"Mom, I need to ask you something."

"All right."

"If you knew the cabin belonged to me, and you knew the agreement prohibited the sale, why didn't you tell Victor to stop?"

She said nothing.

I waited.

"Because I thought it would work out," she finally answered.

"What did you think would work out?"

"I thought you would understand once we explained everything."

"Explain what?"

She began to cry again.

I felt the old instinct rise inside me.

Tell her it's okay.

Tell her you'll work something out.

Tell her she doesn't need to worry.

I had used those words so many times that they came easily.

This time, I kept them to myself.

I loved my mother.

I did not want to punish her.

But I also couldn't continue being the person who absorbed every consequence so everyone else could avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

"I need some time," I said.

She sounded wounded.

"You're my daughter."

"I know."

"After everything I've been through, I never thought you would leave me like this."

I felt the words land exactly where she intended them to.

Perhaps she hadn't planned them that way.

Perhaps she was simply frightened.

But the effect was the same.

She was asking me to prove my love by abandoning the boundary I had set.

"I am not leaving you," I said. "I am refusing to sell the cabin without my permission."

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"I want you to be safe. I want us to have a relationship. But I can't pretend this didn't happen."

For once, she didn't ask me to make it easier.

We ended the call without resolving anything.

I sat quietly until the screen of my laptop dimmed.

Then I moved the photograph of Dad closer to the keyboard.

I could still see the small crescent mark in the kitchen floor in my mind.

A mistake made by a child.

A mistake my father had chosen not to erase.

He had understood that damage and dishonesty were different things.

The floorboard had been marked accidentally.

Nobody had needed to pretend otherwise.

What frightened me now was not that my family had made a mistake.

It was that they had acted as though the agreement did not matter, then expected me to carry the guilt when I refused to cooperate.

I didn't know what my mother would do next.

I didn't know whether Victor would finally explain the document.

But I knew I could no longer make decisions based on the hope that they would eventually understand why the cabin mattered.

I had to act on what I knew.

And I knew I had never authorized the sale.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Cabin Was Still Mine, but Saving It Meant Accepting That the People I Had Helped Might Never See Me the Same Way Again

For the next few days, I kept my conversations with Victor brief.
