Bedroom Permanent.”

Another was labeled “Arthur Office.”

Then there was the one that caused the most questions.

“Evelyn Documents.”

I stared at that photograph when Susan sent it to me.

I had not seen that label before.

It suggested that someone had intended to move or collect items connected to my personal papers.

I didn't know exactly what they planned to do with those documents, and I wasn't going to pretend that I did.

But I knew I had never authorized anyone to handle them.

The label made the claim that this was an innocent, temporary move much harder to accept.

I forwarded the photograph to Mr. Harris.

He added it to the records we were preserving.

Then I put my phone down.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life watching other people discuss my home as though ownership were a matter of opinion.

Over the following two weeks, Daniel called me every day.

At first, he offered explanations.

“Claire was putting pressure on me.”

“I thought I was helping everyone.”

“I didn't think it would become such a big problem.”

I listened.

Sometimes I answered with a few words.

Other times, I let the call end without trying to convince him of anything.

He was still my son.

I still cared whether he was eating properly, sleeping enough, or struggling with the consequences of what had happened.

But caring about him did not mean I had to reassure him that everything was fine.

It wasn't fine.

He had taken my keys from my purse.

He had agreed to let other people enter my estate.

He had deliberately kept the arrangement from me because he feared I would refuse.

Those were his decisions.

I couldn't undo them for him.

A few days later, he sent me a message that I read several times.

“Mom, I finally understand why you were so upset. I wasn't trying to help you or even asking what you wanted. I was trying to avoid hearing no, and I assumed you'd forgive me because you love me.”

I sat at the kitchen table with the phone in my hand.

It was the first time he had acknowledged the real problem without blaming Claire, her parents, or the pressure of the wedding.

I saved the message.

But I didn't reply immediately.

An apology could be sincere and still arrive before the damage had healed.

I needed time to understand what I could forgive and what would have to change before I trusted him again.

Claire, meanwhile, seemed to believe the real problem was that I had refused to cooperate.

She told Daniel he needed to establish boundaries with his mother.

When he stopped arguing with me about the estate, she left him temporarily and went to stay with her parents.

The Blakes were renting a small house in Trenton.

I didn't know what would happen to their marriage.

That was a question Daniel and Claire would have to answer for themselves.

I wasn't going to use my property as a weapon in their relationship, and I wasn't going to surrender it to keep their marriage comfortable.

For the first time, I understood that those were separate matters.

My son could be unhappy with his wife.

He could regret his decisions.

He could even be angry with me.

None of those things changed who owned the estate.

And none of them gave anyone permission to enter it.

I continued with my life.

I tended to the garden.

I spent time in the library.

I walked through the rooms Henry and I had restored, remembering the years when the property had been an aging building with cracked walls and unfinished work.

We had not created that home in a single day.

We had made decisions, saved money, repaired what was broken, and worked through disagreements.

We had built something together.

I wanted to believe Daniel understood that now.

But understanding was not the same as repairing what he had done.

For several weeks, I heard nothing more from the Blake family.

Then, three months after the wedding, Peter called me from the front entrance.

“Mrs. Carter, Mr. Daniel is here.”

I looked up from the book I was reading.

“Is anyone with him?”

“No, ma'am. He's alone.”

“Does he have luggage?”

“No. Just an envelope.”

I closed the book.

I didn't know what Daniel wanted, and I wasn't ready to assume that one visit would settle everything between us.

Still, I stood and walked toward the gate.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Son Returned to the Gate Three Months After the Wedding, Carrying an Envelope That Made Me Question What Else I Had Missed

By midnight, the police had finished documenting the situation at my estate.
