You don’t have to reply. I just wanted you to know I’m thinking about you.”

I read it twice.

There was no request to visit.

No mention of Claire.

No suggestion that I should put the incident behind us.

I wrote back, “I’m well. I hope you are, too.”

Then I set the phone down.

It was a small exchange.

It did not repair anything.

But for the first time in a long while, I did not feel that I had been pushed toward a decision I was not ready to make.

A few days later, he sent another message.

He asked whether I remembered the old wooden panel in the stable building.

I remembered it clearly.

When Daniel was a teenager, Henry had spent an afternoon teaching him how to repair it.

Daniel had wanted to finish quickly.

Henry had made him remove the first set of nails and start again because the panel was sitting crooked.

Daniel had complained that nobody would notice.

Henry had pointed to the gap along the bottom.

“Someone always notices the part you hoped nobody would look at,” he had told him.

Daniel had been annoyed at the time.

Later, he had laughed about it.

His message brought that afternoon back to me with surprising clarity.

“I remember,” I wrote. “Your father made you do it twice.”

Daniel replied, “Three times, actually. I think he let me believe it was twice because I was so upset.”

I smiled.

It was the first time I had smiled at a message from him since the wedding.

I did not mistake that smile for forgiveness.

I simply allowed it to be a smile.

Over the next few weeks, we exchanged occasional messages.

Sometimes we talked about ordinary things.

Sometimes we said nothing for several days.

He did not ask to come inside the estate.

He did not ask me to speak to Claire.

He did not suggest that I should forgive him because he was my son.

I began to understand that I had been waiting for a particular kind of apology.

Not one that made me feel better for an afternoon.

Not one that asked me to reassure the person who had hurt me.

I needed to see that Daniel understood what he had done without requiring me to soften the truth.

One evening, he called.

I let the phone ring twice before answering.

“Hello, Daniel.”

“Hi, Mom.”

His voice sounded tired, but I could not tell whether that tiredness came from work, worry, or regret.

“How are you?” he asked.

“I’m fine. How are you?”

“I'm managing.”

Neither of us rushed to fill the silence.

Then he said, “I’ve been thinking about what happened.”

I held the phone closer to my ear.

“I figured you might be.”

“I keep going back to the rehearsal dinner. I knew copying those keys was wrong. I knew you hadn't agreed to anything. I told myself I was helping Claire and avoiding a fight.”

He paused.

“But I was really avoiding telling her no.”

I looked out the window toward the driveway.

The gate was visible between two trees.

“Yes,” I said. “You were.”

“I wanted everyone to be happy with me.”

“And you decided I could be the person who wasn't.”

He did not answer immediately.

Then he said, “Yes.”

That single word mattered more than a long explanation would have.

I had heard enough excuses in the weeks after the wedding.

I did not need another account of how difficult Claire had been, how much pressure her family had applied, or how uncomfortable Daniel had felt.

He had been uncomfortable.

I understood that.

But he had chosen to make me pay for his discomfort.

“I can't change what I did,” he said. “I know that. I just don't want to keep pretending I didn't understand what I was doing.”

I sat down at the kitchen table.

“Then don't pretend,” I told him. “Not with me, and not with yourself.”

“I won't.”

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew that wanting something to be true did not make it true.

We talked for another few minutes about work and ordinary matters.

Before ending the call, Daniel asked whether I wanted him to check on anything at the estate.

“Peter has everything under control,” I said.

“All right.”

He did not argue.

After the call, I remained at the table for a while.

The conversation had not changed my decision about access to the property.

It had not restored the trust he had broken.

But he had finally described his behavior without hiding behind the word mistake.

I thought that was a beginning.

A beginning was not the same as an ending.

And I had no intention of pretending otherwise.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Home I Would Not Bargain Away

The weeks after Daniel returned the key were quiet.
