A glass of water stood untouched beside Richard's chair.

I kept looking at that glass.

It reminded me of all the meetings where I had sat quietly while Richard spoke over me, waiting for a moment when I could finish explaining a number he had misunderstood.

Those days were over.

Not because I had finally learned to shout louder than he did.

Because I no longer needed his permission to speak.

Richard's attorney asked for a copy of the documents supporting the board's decision.

Independent counsel explained how the records could be requested and reviewed.

Nobody raised their voice.

That seemed to make Richard angrier.

He had expected a confrontation he could turn into a personal argument. Instead, he was being treated as an executive whose conduct had to be examined.

I understood why that unsettled him.

For most of our marriage, he had been able to make people feel that disagreeing with him was the same as betraying him.

Now, nobody was asking whether the directors liked him.

They were asking what the records showed.

Emily remained seated.

Noah had placed the document concerning the six-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer in front of him. He kept looking at the amount as if it might change if he studied it long enough.

Richard noticed.

“Those transactions have explanations,” he said.

Noah looked up.

“Then explain them.”

Richard turned toward independent counsel.

“I will respond through my attorney.”

It was the first sensible thing he had said all morning.

But Noah seemed to hear something else in it.

His father had used his name in financial transactions, and now he was refusing to answer a simple question in front of him.

Noah lowered his eyes.

Emily rubbed her palms against her skirt.

I wanted to reach across the table and comfort them both.

I didn't.

They needed room to understand what they had learned, and I couldn't make that understanding easier by pretending I had not been hurt too.

Vanessa stood beside her attorney while the remaining documents were gathered.

She hadn't said much during the meeting.

Her attention kept returning to the photograph of the pearl earrings.

I remembered how carefully my grandmother had stored those earrings in a small lined box.

She never wore them casually.

She would take them out before a wedding or a family celebration, hold them near the window, and check the settings.

When I inherited them, she told me they were valuable because of the memories attached to them.

I had believed her.

Now the earrings had become part of a dispute that was much larger than their monetary value.

Dana approached me while the others were preparing to leave.

“We'll continue pursuing the property issue through the appropriate process,” she said.

“I understand.”

“We have the original schedule from the divorce, and the video provides a useful record of what was displayed.”

I nodded.

I didn't ask whether Vanessa would be punished.

That decision wasn't mine to make.

The jewelry had to be accounted for, just like the company funds. If it had been improperly retained or insured, the relevant authorities and legal representatives would have to determine what followed.

I had no intention of making the earrings a weapon.

I wanted them returned.

That was all.

As I gathered my papers, Emily approached me.

“Mom, can we talk?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She glanced toward the hallway, where her father had disappeared with his attorney.

“Not here.”

“All right.”

We arranged to speak later that afternoon.

Noah said he wanted to come too.

I agreed.

Neither child hugged me before leaving.

I told myself not to take that as another rejection.

They had just discovered that their father might have used their identities in financial dealings they hadn't approved. They were frightened, confused, and probably ashamed of things they had never done.

They didn't need me to demand affection.

They needed me to remain steady.

That afternoon, I returned home and placed the blue folder on my desk.

For the first time in days, I opened the drawer where I kept my grandmother's old jewelry box.

It was empty.

I had known that for years, of course.

Still, I looked at the velvet lining as if I might find the earrings waiting beneath it.

I closed the lid.

Then I made tea.

Emily and Noah arrived together shortly after three.

Emily carried no handbag, only her phone. Noah held a folded sheet of paper in one hand.

They sat in the living room.

For a while, nobody spoke.

I placed three cups on the coffee table.

The ordinary sound of porcelain against wood seemed too loud.

Finally, Noah unfolded his paper.

“These are the transactions they showed us.”

He slid it toward me.

I read the page.

It contained a list of records already discussed at the board meeting. The investigators were examining the use of accounts associated with my children and the signatures attached to certain documents.

I didn't need to see the details again to understand why they were upset.

“Did you know about this?” Emily asked.

“Not until the records were reviewed.”

“Dad used my name.”

Her voice broke on the last word.

“I know.”

“Did he use Noah's too?”

“The investigators identified activity involving both of you.”

She pressed her hands against her face.

Noah stared at the paper.

I waited until Emily lowered her hands.

“Were we supposed to know?” she asked.

“That's something the investigators will establish from the records. I won't pretend to know more than the evidence shows.”

She looked at me for a long time.

I could see the question she wasn't asking.

Why hadn't I told her what Richard was like?

Why had I allowed her to believe that I had abandoned the family?

Why had I let her sit at a Christmas table where I wasn't welcome without telling her that the life around her might have been built on decisions she didn't understand?

I couldn't answer all those questions at once.

So I started with the one I could answer honestly.

“I tried to keep you out of the conflict between your father and me.”

Emily looked down.

“I thought that meant keeping quiet about things that would hurt you. I didn't understand how much room that gave him to tell his version of the story.”

“Dad said you didn't care about the company anymore.”

“I know.”

“He said you wanted a quieter life.”

“I did want a quieter life.”

She looked surprised.

I continued.

“But that doesn't mean I stopped caring about the company. And it certainly doesn't mean I stopped caring about you.”

Noah leaned forward.

“Why did you let him keep everything?”

The question hurt more than I expected.

I could have defended myself.

I could have listed the terms of the divorce settlement and explained the decisions I had made to preserve the company.

Instead, I took a breath.

“I didn't let him keep everything. I agreed that he could remain CEO because I thought separating our personal lives from the business would protect the employees and the company.”

“And he thought you'd given up,” Noah said.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you fight him?”

I looked at my son.

“Sometimes I should have challenged him more directly. I know that now.”

He didn't look satisfied.

I couldn't blame him.

The truth was not as simple as a story in which one parent had been right about everything and the other had been wrong about everything.

I had made choices.

Some had been wise.

Some had been mistakes.

I had stayed quiet because I wanted my children to have a relationship with their father. I had also stayed quiet because confrontation exhausted me, and I wanted to believe that the man I had married would eventually behave responsibly.

That belief had lasted longer than it should have.

“I wasn't trying to make you choose between us,” I told them. “But I should have found a better way to protect you without hiding so much.”

Emily wiped her eyes.

“I told you not to come to Christmas.”

“Yes.”

“I said it like you didn't belong.”

I didn't look away.

“You hurt me.”

She nodded, crying again.

“I know.”

“I need you to understand that.”

“I do.”

I wanted to believe her.

But understanding the words was only the beginning. Trust would require more than a tearful afternoon in my living room.

I had learned that the hard way.

Noah picked up his cup and put it down without drinking.

“What happens to the company now?”

“The board has appointed an interim chair. An independent review is continuing, and the company is cooperating with the investigators.”

“Are you going to run it?”

“Not alone. My role is to help oversee the company while the board manages the transition.”

He nodded slowly.

“And Dad?”

“His employment has been terminated. The other questions are for the investigators and the courts.”

Emily looked toward the window.

“Is he going to prison?”

“I don't know.”

That answer seemed to frighten her more than anything else I had said.

I reached across the coffee table and placed my hand near hers.

I didn't touch her until she moved her fingers toward mine.

Then I held them.

“I won't lie to you to make this easier,” I said. “But I won't ask you to hate him, either.”

She squeezed my hand.

For the first time since the grocery-store call, I felt that we were speaking to each other instead of trying to survive what Richard had told us.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Spent Years Keeping My Children Away From Their Father’s Worst Choices, but I Could No Longer Make the Truth Disappear

The meeting ended, but nobody seemed ready to leave.
