He could explain a complicated problem without raising his voice.

But standing in front of hundreds of people was different.

He took the microphone anyway.

His fingers trembled around it.

"My name is Travis Brandt," he began. "I've been Kaylee's stepfather for nine years."

The gym quieted.

Kaylee stood beside him, still holding his arm.

Travis glanced at her.

"On Tuesday, she asked me to walk her out here tonight."

He swallowed.

"I told her I shouldn't do it."

Nobody interrupted.

"I told her that this was something her real father ought to do."

He lowered his eyes.

I could see his jaw working as he tried to continue.

"I thought I was being respectful. I thought I was staying out of a place that didn't belong to me."

He paused.

Then he looked directly at Kaylee.

"I was wrong about that."

My daughter didn't move.

Neither did Dad.

Travis took a breath.

"I've spent a long time worrying about whether I had the right to call myself your dad. I thought if I did, maybe I'd be taking something away from somebody else."

His voice became rough.

"But I was here. I kept coming to your games. I drove you to practice. I built that terrible volleyball net in the backyard, and I made you sit through all my attempts to fix it."

A few people laughed softly.

Travis smiled for half a second.

Then the smile disappeared.

"I wanted to walk with you tonight. I just didn't have the courage to admit it."

His eyes filled.

"I'm sorry, Kay."

He lowered the microphone and handed it back to Mr. Halvorson.

For a moment, Kaylee simply stared at him.

I couldn't tell what she was thinking.

I wanted to go down to the court and put my arms around both of them.

But this wasn't my moment to manage.

It belonged to my daughter.

Then she stepped forward.

She wrapped her arms around Travis and pressed her face against his shoulder.

He held her tightly.

Her long blonde braid fell across the back of his fleece vest.

My husband closed his eyes.

I saw his shoulders shake once.

He was crying.

Not loudly.

Not in a way that demanded attention.

He was simply a man who had spent nine years being afraid that the love he offered a child might not be his to give.

And my daughter was holding him as though she had never wanted anything else.

I wiped my face with the sleeve of my sweater.

Beside me, Mason was still waving his poster.

He had stopped shouting, but he hadn't put it down.

Then Dad moved.

He had been holding Kaylee's red rose beside his cane.

Now he extended it toward Travis.

My husband pulled back from Kaylee and looked at the flower.

"No, sir. You should keep that."

Dad didn't lower his hand.

"Go ahead and take it, son."

Travis shook his head again.

"You walked her out here."

Dad gave him a small smile.

"She's my granddaughter. That part won't change."

He nudged the rose forward.

"But you've been the one raising her."

Travis stared at him.

Dad's voice remained calm.

"I've already had the privilege of raising my daughter. You have yours to raise."

For a second, Travis seemed unable to understand what he was being offered.

Then he reached out and accepted the rose.

Dad nodded once.

There was no grand speech.

No demand that Travis promise anything.

No attempt to make himself the hero of the evening.

He had come because Kaylee had asked him to walk with her.

Now he was giving the flower to the man who had finally found the courage to walk beside her, too.

I pressed my hands against my mouth.

That small exchange hurt more than the microphone speech.

Because my father had done what Travis had been unable to do for years.

He had made room for another man without feeling threatened by him.

He had understood that loving Kaylee didn't require him to claim every place in her life.

It only required him to show up when she needed him.

Dad adjusted his green cap.

Then he turned toward the bleachers.

A young volleyball player stepped forward to offer him an arm.

Dad thanked her, but he continued at his own pace, setting his cane carefully before each step.

I watched him cross the gym.

He didn't look around to see who was applauding.

He didn't wait for anyone to tell him that he'd done something wonderful.

He simply made his way back to his seat.

When he reached the four steps leading to the bleachers, he paused and placed his cane firmly on the first one.

I started to stand.

He glanced toward me.

"Sit down, Jodi. I've got it."

I sat.

He climbed carefully, one step at a time, then settled beside me with a quiet breath.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

I leaned my head against his shoulder.

"Dad, I don't know what to say."

He patted my knee.

"You don't have to say anything."

I laughed through my tears.

He looked toward the court.

"That went all right, didn't it?"

I laughed harder.

It was such a familiar thing for him to say after an evening that had left half the gym crying.

Down on the court, Kaylee had moved back beside Travis.

He was still holding the rose.

Mr. Halvorson gestured toward the photographer near the scorer's table.

They needed to take the senior photograph.

Kaylee looked at Travis.

Then she glanced toward the bleachers and waved both hands.

"Mom! Grandpa! Mason! Come down here!"

Mason was already moving.

He nearly dropped his poster while trying to squeeze past the people in our row.

I helped Dad stand.

He gripped his cane, waited until he felt steady, and started down the steps.

Nobody hurried him.

A woman near the aisle moved her bag so he would have room.

A man stepped aside.

The young volleyball player who had offered to help him earlier waited nearby in case he needed her.

Dad made it to the floor without assistance.

Then we walked toward the center of the court.

Mason reached Kaylee first.

He held up his poster, which had turned sideways during the journey down the bleachers.

"Look! I made you something!"

Kaylee laughed and hugged him with one arm.

"That's a very good volleyball."

"I know."

He sounded pleased with himself.

Travis stood beside them, still holding the red rose.

When Dad reached the group, my husband stepped forward.

"Thank you," Travis said quietly.

Dad looked at him.

"For what?"

"For letting me have that moment."

Dad shook his head.

"She gave you that moment herself."

Travis looked toward Kaylee.

She was helping Mason turn his poster the right way up.

Dad followed his gaze.

"You keep showing up for her," he said.

Travis nodded.

"I will."

Dad didn't ask him to promise anything more.

The photographer called us closer together.

We stood beneath the maroon and gold streamers, with the school banners hanging above us and the polished court stretching out behind our feet.

Mason held his poster.

Kaylee stood beside Travis.

Dad rested both hands on his cane.

I slipped my arm through my father's.

The photographer counted.

"One, two, three."

The flash went off.

Nobody knew that the photograph would become one of the most important pictures in our house.

At the time, we were simply a family trying to stand still long enough to get a decent picture.

And for once, nobody was asking whether everyone belonged.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: After the Applause Faded and the Gym Emptied, My Husband Finally Told Me Why He Had Been Afraid to Call Kaylee His Daughter

Travis kept his arm linked with Kaylee's until they reached the center of the court.
