I shouldn't have kept it from you."

He nodded.

"If you'd told me, I probably would have agreed to walk with her."

I waited.

He looked down at the flower.

"But I think I would have done it because I knew you wanted me to."

"That's what I was afraid of."

"I know."

He rubbed his thumb along the stem.

"I didn't want to disappoint you. I didn't want your dad thinking I was a bad husband."

He paused.

"That's not the same as knowing what Kaylee needed."

I felt a small ache in my chest.

"No, it isn't."

I had been so focused on making sure Travis understood his mistake that I hadn't considered how my decision to keep Dad's arrival secret might affect him.

I had wanted the truth to reach him without my help.

But I'd also withheld information that mattered.

"I should have trusted you enough to tell you," I said.

He nodded.

"We both should have talked more."

We sat quietly.

Then Travis began telling me something about his childhood that I had never fully understood.

When he was twelve, his mother remarried.

Her new husband was named Dale.

Travis had told me before that Dale was a decent man.

He worked hard.

He provided for the household.

He wasn't cruel, and he didn't make a habit of shouting or creating trouble.

But Dale had been clear about one thing.

He wasn't Travis's father.

Travis had learned to accept that without argument.

Then came the Little League banquet.

At the end of the season, the boys were supposed to walk forward with their fathers to receive their trophies.

Travis had earned one.

He had asked Dale to accompany him.

Dale refused.

He told the boy that his biological father should be the person standing beside him.

Travis's biological father didn't show up either.

So Travis walked forward alone.

He accepted the trophy and returned to his seat.

He never asked Dale to accompany him to another school event.

I stared at my husband.

I could picture him at twelve, trying to act as though walking alone didn't matter.

I imagined the other boys standing beside their fathers.

I imagined him looking down at his trophy and wondering why the person who lived in his house couldn't stand beside him for a few minutes.

Travis turned the rose between his fingers.

"I promised myself I'd never make a child feel like that."

His voice was low.

I reached across the table.

"Then why did you say almost the same thing to Kaylee?"

He closed his eyes.

"Because I was scared."

He took a breath.

"Every time I wanted to call her my daughter, I thought about Ryan. I thought about what might happen if he came back."

He looked at me.

"What if Kaylee decided she wanted him to be her dad again? What if she thought I was trying to take his place? What if she resented me for claiming something she hadn't offered?"

I listened without interrupting.

He had spent nine years asking himself those questions.

He had never asked Kaylee.

He had never asked me.

He had simply decided that the safest thing was to keep a little distance between the life he lived and the name he was afraid to use.

"I thought I was being respectful," he said.

"But you were protecting yourself, too."

He nodded.

"I think I was."

His honesty hurt.

It also helped.

I could see how the boy who had walked to the front of a room alone had become the man who was afraid to stand beside a girl who loved him.

He had promised himself he would never make a child feel unwanted.

Then he had spent years worrying that accepting a child's love might be the same as taking something away from someone else.

He had been so careful not to become Dale that he had repeated Dale's mistake.

"I didn't want her to think I was replacing Ryan," he said.

"She wasn't asking you to replace him."

"I know."

He looked at the rose again.

"Your dad didn't worry about any of that. Kaylee asked him to come, so he came."

I nodded.

"He didn't need to figure out what it meant before he agreed."

Travis let out a quiet breath.

"And I needed nine years to figure out what it meant."

I reached across the table and held his hand.

"You've been her dad in so many ways."

He looked at me.

"But I kept thinking that if I said it out loud, I might be claiming something she didn't want me to claim."

"She asked you to walk with her."

"I know."

He repeated the words softly.

Then he looked toward the staircase.

"I should have trusted her."

We sat together until the coffee was cold.

I didn't tell him that everything was forgiven.

I didn't pretend that the hurt had disappeared.

Instead, I told him the truth.

"I was angry with you."

He nodded.

"I know."

"And I still think you hurt her."

"I know that, too."

"But I think I understand why you did it now."

He squeezed my hand.

"That doesn't make it right."

"No."

I looked at the rose.

"But it means we can do something about it."

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

We talked until nearly eleven.

We talked about Ryan, about the years of silence, and about the way Travis had learned to measure his place in our family by what he was afraid to claim.

We talked about my decision to keep Dad's arrival secret.

We admitted the things we had each done wrong.

And for the first time, we stopped trying to protect each other from an uncomfortable conversation by pretending everything was fine.

The rose remained between us.

Its petals were still fresh.

Its stem rested against the side of the cup.

I thought about how Dad had offered it to Travis without asking him to prove anything.

He had simply recognized the years of work my husband had put into raising Kaylee.

I understood then that my father had given Travis something more important than a flower.

He had reminded him that being a father wasn't a competition.

It was a responsibility.

And Travis had already been carrying it.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When Kaylee Returned Home, She Didn’t Ask Her Stepdad for Another Apology; She Asked Why He Had Ever Believed He Wasn’t Her Dad

The drive home was quiet.
