She said we need to make sure the financial aid forms are started before the end of the month."

I stared at him.

"You called her?"

"Yes."

"Without me reminding you?"

He narrowed his eyes.

"Jodi."

I smiled.

"I'm sorry. I'm just adjusting to the new management style."

He rolled his eyes, but I could see the pleasure underneath his embarrassment.

At the school, Kaylee sat between us in a chair that was too small for her long legs.

Her counselor explained the different application deadlines and asked whether both parents had questions.

Travis raised his hand slightly.

"I have one."

Kaylee turned toward him.

The counselor waited.

Travis looked down at his notes.

"If she gets accepted to two schools and one offers more financial aid, how do we compare the actual cost without making a decision based only on the first year's offer?"

The counselor smiled.

"That's an excellent question."

Kaylee looked at him with an expression I had not seen in a long time.

It wasn't surprise that he cared.

She had never doubted that.

It was relief that he was standing fully inside the conversation instead of at the edge of it.

On the drive home, she sat in the back seat because Mason had left his enormous backpack on the passenger seat.

"You know," she said, "you didn't have to take off work for that."

Travis glanced at her in the rearview mirror.

"I know."

"I could have handled it with Mom."

"I know that too."

"Then why did you?"

He didn't answer immediately.

We stopped at a red light.

"Because it's important."

Kaylee looked out the window.

After a moment, she said, "Okay."

It was a small word.

But I saw her shoulders relax.

That night, she taped a new list of college deadlines to the refrigerator, just beneath the photograph from senior night.

Mason studied both pieces of paper while eating cereal straight from the box.

"Why do you need so many dates?"

Kaylee took the box away from him.

"Because college is complicated."

"Then don't go."

She threw a cereal piece at him.

He ducked, and it hit Travis in the chest.

Travis picked it up and dropped it into Mason's bowl.

"Excellent aim, son."

Mason grinned.

The kitchen returned to its usual noise.

And for the first time in months, I realized I had stopped watching Travis to see whether he was going to retreat.

I was simply living beside him again.

A few days later, my father called.

Duane rarely called without a reason, but he had never been a man who believed every conversation needed a purpose.

Sometimes he called to ask about the weather.

Sometimes he wanted to know whether Mason was still trying to build a ramp for his toy trucks across the living room.

That afternoon, he wanted to know whether Travis had finished fixing the shed latch.

"He did," I told him.

"Good."

"You sound surprised."

"I'm not surprised. I'm pleased."

I smiled into the phone.

"Those are different things?"

"Very."

I could hear the faint clatter of tools in the background.

Dad had probably been working on something that did not need fixing.

"How's Travis?" he asked.

"He's doing well."

"Really?"

I leaned against the counter.

"He's trying, Dad."

"I know."

There was a pause.

Then Dad said, "A man can spend a long time thinking he has to stand outside a door before he realizes the people inside have been waiting for him."

I looked at the photograph.

"That sounds like something you practiced saying."

"Maybe I did."

I laughed.

He laughed too.

Then his voice grew quieter.

"Don't let him think one good night means he never has to be afraid again."

"I won't."

"And don't let him think being afraid excuses him from showing up."

"I won't do that either."

"Good."

After we hung up, I told Travis what Dad had said.

He was sitting at the table, checking Kaylee's application schedule.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he nodded.

"Your dad is annoyingly good at saying things I don't want to hear."

"He has had practice."

Travis folded the paper carefully.

"He's right."

I sat beside him.

"About which part?"

"Both parts."

He looked at the photograph again.

"I can't promise I'll never get scared. But I can promise I won't use being scared as a reason to leave her standing alone."

I rested my hand over his.

That was the promise I had wanted from him all along.

Not perfection.

Not a declaration that he would never make another mistake.

Just the understanding that love required him to keep showing up, even when the old hurt told him to step back.

The next morning, he left a note beside Kaylee's lunch.

It said, "Good luck on your chemistry test. You know more than you think. Love, Dad."

The handwriting was his.

The paper was torn from Mason's notebook.

A little blue dinosaur was printed in the corner.

Kaylee carried the note in her pocket all day.

I found out because she came home and put it carefully inside the drawer where she kept her volleyball medals.

She thought I was upstairs.

I was standing at the bottom of the stairs when I saw her do it.

I didn't say anything.

Some things were better left untouched.

That evening, she asked Travis whether he could help her practice for a scholarship interview.

He pushed his dinner plate aside.

"Absolutely."

She sat across from him with a notebook.

Mason tried to join them, but Kaylee told him the interview was not for a professional dinosaur trainer.

He went away offended.

For almost an hour, Travis asked questions and listened to her answers.

Sometimes he offered advice.

Sometimes he told her to slow down and breathe.

When she finished, he said, "You don't have to make yourself sound like somebody else to impress them."

Kaylee closed her notebook.

"That was actually good advice."

"I have my moments."

She stood and hugged him from behind.

"Thanks, Dad."

This time, he didn't freeze.

He reached up, squeezed her hand, and continued smiling.

I watched from the doorway.

The change wasn't dramatic enough for anyone outside our house to notice.

But I knew what it had cost him to get there.

And I knew what it meant to Kaylee.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Kaylee Asked Travis to Help Her Choose a College, He Finally Understood That Being Her Father Meant Letting Her Need Him

The photograph stayed on the refrigerator long after the red rose had dried.
