You've been working all night."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he had found another way to make the problem about my condition instead of his behavior.

I had been exhausted when my mother called.

I had been exhausted at the station.

I was still exhausted now.

But exhaustion did not explain the second mortgage.

It did not explain the offshore transfers.

And it did not explain the new fireplace poker.

"I'm tired," I told him. "I'm not confused."

He stopped speaking.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

Then he asked whether I intended to destroy our marriage over a misunderstanding.

I looked at the man I had once trusted more than anyone else.

He was still trying to make the consequences of his actions sound like decisions I was making against him.

I didn't answer the question.

I had no intention of deciding the future of my marriage in the middle of my mother's living room.

There were too many facts I didn't know.

There were too many questions that needed proper answers.

And there was a woman in a hospital bed whose injuries mattered more than Nolan's fear of embarrassment.

I told him I was leaving.

He asked where I was going.

"Back to the hospital."

He shook his head as though I were being unreasonable.

I walked past him anyway.

Outside, the air was warm and heavy.

I sat in my car for a moment before starting the engine.

My phone was still in my hand.

I opened the financial records again, not because I expected to discover an explanation in the next few seconds, but because I wanted to make sure I remembered what I had seen.

The amounts.

The transfers.

The mortgage.

I didn't know how much money remained.

I didn't know whether the gambling losses explained every transfer or whether some transactions had another purpose.

I wasn't going to invent answers.

I would let the records speak for themselves.

On the drive back, I thought about the phrase Nolan had used at the station.

Choose your career. Choose us.

He had presented the choice as though those were the only two things that mattered.

But my mother mattered.

The truth mattered.

And the integrity I had tried to maintain throughout my military career mattered too.

If I protected Nolan by concealing what I knew, I would be making a decision about more than my marriage.

I would be deciding that my comfort mattered more than the truth.

I wasn't prepared to make that decision.

When I reached the hospital, I went straight to my mother's room.

She was awake.

Her broken glasses were not on the bedside table, and without them she had to turn her head slightly to recognize me.

"You're back."

I pulled a chair beside her bed.

"Of course."

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

I took her hand.

"Please don't apologize."

She tried to explain that she hadn't wanted to cause trouble between Nolan and me.

I told her that we didn't have to discuss any of that yet.

She needed rest.

She needed time to recover.

And I needed to stop allowing Nolan's choices to become her responsibility.

I sat beside her until she was tired enough to close her eyes again.

Before she fell asleep, she squeezed my hand.

I stayed there, thinking about the financial records and the request she had made the week before.

I still didn't know precisely what she had discovered.

But I knew why I had to find out.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: My Mother Had Asked to See Our Financial Records the Week Before, and Suddenly Her Quiet Concern Made Sense

Nolan didn't answer me.
