Keep doing that.”

She shifted slightly, then winced.

I waited until she was comfortable before continuing.

“Why did you ask Nolan about the mortgage?”

“Because I saw your signature on a document that did not look right.”

“Could it have been a scanned signature?”

“It could have been copied from another document. I would need the original and a proper examination before making a definitive statement.”

“Did you tell him that?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He stopped pretending the conversation was ordinary.”

My mother's fingers tightened around the blanket.

“He asked me how much I had seen. I told him enough to know the transfers were not what he had described.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“Not at first. He told me I was misreading the accounts. He said the companies were legitimate, that the transfers were part of a complicated investment strategy, and that I had no right to examine his clients' information.”

“Were they client accounts?”

“Some of the records appeared to involve companies connected to his business. Others were transfers from accounts I recognized as belonging to you and Nolan.”

The word belonging struck me.

I had always treated our finances as something we shared, even though Nolan managed most of the investments. I had never questioned the arrangement because I trusted his professional judgment.

That trust had left me with years of statements I had never read closely.

“Did you see where the money went?”

“I saw transfers to holding companies registered overseas. I also found payments connected to online gambling operations. But I could not establish the full path from the copies I had.”

“Were the amounts large?”

“Large enough to worry me.”

I thought of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that had moved over six months.

I thought of the second mortgage.

I thought of Nolan standing in my mother's living room, warning me that my career could be ruined if I continued asking questions.

“Why didn't you tell me directly?” I asked.

Corinne looked down at her hands.

“I tried to tell you that something was wrong. You said Nolan had explained the investments.”

“I did.”

“I didn't want to accuse your husband without evidence. I thought I could verify the records first.”

Her voice softened.

“And I did not want to make you choose between your mother and your marriage.”

I felt a painful heat rise behind my eyes.

“You should never have had to protect me from the truth.”

“I was trying to protect you from a mistake.”

I reached for her hand.

“I know.”

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then she remembered something else.

“The papers were not all in one place. I made a separate list of the transfers, with the dates and the company names. I kept that list apart from the statements.”

“Where?”

“In my house, probably. But not in the folder Nolan knew about.”

“Do you remember putting it somewhere specific?”

She stared at the ceiling.

“I put it somewhere I would remember.”

“Mom.”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds like you were injured in your own home and now you are trying to remember where you put important papers.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“The list may still be there.”

I called Detective Reese Dalton from the hallway.

He answered on the second ring.

“Blair. How is your mother?”

“Stable, but she has more information about the financial records. She says Nolan was asking about copies she had printed.”

“Did she see him take anything?”

“No. She believes he was searching for them, but she cannot confirm that he found them.”

“That's useful. We need to keep those distinctions clear.”

“She also says she made a separate list of transfers and company names.”

“Do you know where it is?”

“Not yet.”

“Don't search the house alone. If there may be evidence there, we need to document the search properly.”

“I understand.”

“I'll arrange for an investigator to coordinate with you. Has Nolan contacted you since you left?”

“He warned me about my clearance and promotion.”

Dalton paused.

“Did he threaten you directly?”

“He said I could lose everything I had worked for if I turned this into a criminal investigation.”

“Write down the exact words while you remember them. Include the time and where you were.”

“I will.”

“Blair, I also want you to understand something. A financial discrepancy does not automatically prove assault, and a suspicious purchase does not prove who used an object. We have to establish each part independently.”

“I agree.”

“We need the physical evidence, the timeline, the records, and statements from everyone involved. Your mother's account matters, but we'll test it against what we can verify.”

His caution steadied me.

I had spent the previous night trying to build a complete picture from fragments. Dalton reminded me that a case was not strengthened by pretending those fragments already formed a whole.

After the call, I returned to Corinne's room.

She was looking at the small vase of flowers someone from the hospital staff had brought.

“Did Nolan call you?” she asked.

“No.”

“Good.”

I sat beside her.

“Detective Dalton is arranging a proper search for the records.”

“Don't let him make you feel foolish for asking questions.”

“I won't.”

“And don't let Nolan convince you that asking questions means you are betraying him.”

I looked at her bruised face.

“I think he has been counting on that.”

Corinne said nothing.

She did not need to.

When I left the hospital, I drove home and went directly to the small desk in our study. I opened the drawer where we kept mortgage statements, tax documents, and insurance papers.

The most recent mortgage statement was there.

The balance was much higher than I remembered.

I placed it beside the document I had previously found and compared the dates. The second mortgage had been processed months earlier than I had realized.

I checked the signature.

It resembled mine at first glance.

But the final stroke in my surname was too careful, as if someone had copied the shape rather than written it naturally.

I did not declare it forged. I photographed the page, recorded where I had found it, and put it back without making any further changes.

Then I checked my email for the message Nolan had sent about the investment account.

There it was, dated six months earlier.

He had described the arrangement as a routine portfolio adjustment and asked me to approve a document through a link. I could not remember whether I had opened the attachment.

The email itself did not prove that he had forged my signature.

It did give investigators a specific place to begin.

I saved a copy and wrote down the date.

At the bottom of the drawer, I found an envelope containing older statements from our joint account. Several pages were missing from the sequence.

I counted the gaps twice.

They were not proof of wrongdoing either.

But someone had removed records from a file that should have been complete.

I heard Nolan's key turn in the front door.

I left the envelope where it was and stepped into the hallway.

He saw the papers on the desk.

“What are you doing?”

“Reviewing our finances.”

His eyes moved from the statements to my face.

“You shouldn't be handling this without me.”

“They are my accounts too.”

“That's not the point.”

“What is the point, Nolan?”

He took off his jacket slowly.

“You don't understand how these investments work.”

“Then explain them.”

He stared at the documents.

For the first time, he seemed less concerned about what I believed than about what I might have found.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Records Connected the Money to the Attack

Corinne took a sip of water and rested her head against the pillow.
