they were final.

I told him I would speak with him again when he was ready to discuss more than the money.

Then I ended the call.

I sat quietly for several minutes.

Part of me wanted to call him back.

I wanted to explain that I had never intended to make him feel abandoned.

I wanted to reassure him that I was still his father.

But I had already said those things in different ways.

What I had not done was allow him to face the consequences of his own decisions.

That morning, I decided not to correct his discomfort for him.

The next few days were difficult.

Logan continued calling.

Sometimes he asked questions about the credit line.

Sometimes he wanted to know whether I had spoken to Fiona.

Once, he asked whether I was planning to sell my investments.

I told him I had no reason to discuss every decision I made with him.

He sounded offended.

I understood why.

For years, I had given him information whenever he asked.

I had shared documents when he needed them for the business.

I had explained financial decisions because I thought transparency would prevent misunderstandings.

But I had also allowed him to become accustomed to access that was never the same as ownership.

The portfolio had been mine before the credit line.

It remained mine after the credit line.

The difference was that I was no longer willing to leave it exposed simply because my son expected me to.

One afternoon, Fiona called to update me on the process.

She explained that the bank's requirements remained in place and that Logan would need to work with the bank to resolve the collateral issue.

I asked whether everything was proceeding according to the agreements.

She confirmed that the necessary steps were being followed.

I thanked her.

Before we ended the call, she asked how I was managing.

I told her I was sleeping better.

That was true.

I still missed Logan.

I still wondered whether I had done enough to preserve our relationship.

But I no longer woke in the middle of the night imagining the next request I might have to accommodate.

My apartment had become comfortable.

I bought a small table for the living room.

I placed Margaret's photograph on a shelf where I could see it from my chair.

I also found a framed picture of Logan when he was seventeen.

He was standing beside the old car we had repaired together.

His hair was longer than I remembered, and his hands were dirty from the work.

He had looked proud that day.

I remembered him saying he wanted to build something of his own.

I had told him he could, provided he learned to take responsibility for what he built.

I wondered when that lesson had become harder for him to remember than the money I had given him.

I didn't have an answer.

I only knew that the young man in the photograph had once understood the value of work.

I hoped the man he had become could find his way back to that understanding.

A few days later, Chelsea called.

I recognized her number and nearly let the call go unanswered.

Then I decided to pick up.

“Albert, we need to talk.”

Her voice was tense.

“I can listen.”

She began by explaining how difficult things had become since the notices arrived.

She said Logan was under pressure.

She said the business had obligations that couldn't simply be ignored.

She said the household had expenses to meet.

I listened without interrupting.

When she finished, I asked what she wanted from me.

She hesitated.

“We need you to reconsider.”

“Which arrangement?”

“All of them, if possible.”

I looked at the folder on my table.

“I've already explained why I made those decisions.”

“You're making everything harder than it needs to be.”

I felt an old instinct rise inside me.

I wanted to apologize for causing trouble.

I wanted to offer a compromise before she became more upset.

Instead, I asked her a question.

“Chelsea, when you asked me to leave the dining room, did you think about what that would feel like for me?”

There was silence.

“I wasn't trying to hurt you.”

“I understand that may not have been your intention.”

“Then why are you treating it as if I deliberately humiliated you?”

I took a breath.

“Because it wasn't the first time you asked me to make myself invisible.”

She said that she had never intended to make me feel unwelcome.

I believed she might mean it.

But intention could not erase what had happened.

“I don't want to argue,” I told her.

“Neither do I.”

“Then please understand that I am not going to continue financial arrangements I no longer feel comfortable maintaining.”

She asked whether I was willing to discuss them with Logan again.

I told her I had already done so.

Before ending the call, she said something I remembered long after we hung up.

“You know we always considered you part of the family.”

I looked around my apartment.

I thought of the back entrance.

The meals I had eaten in the kitchen.

The bedroom where I had been told to remain while guests visited.

“I wish I had felt that,” I said.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Then the call ended.

I sat there with the phone in my hand.

I wasn't pleased that Chelsea was upset.

I wasn't pleased that Logan's business was facing difficult decisions.

But I had finally stopped treating their distress as proof that I needed to reverse my own decisions.

That was a change I intended to keep.

Source: <a
