About what we do from here."

I considered the question.

I had spent years hoping Chelsea would understand me without my having to explain the obvious.

That hope had not served me well.

Now I needed to decide whether a conversation could help, even if it could not repair everything.

"Would you both be willing to listen?" I asked.

"I would."

"And Chelsea?"

"She says she would."

"Then I am willing to meet."

He thanked me.

We arranged to meet the following Saturday at the café.

After the call, I put the watering can away and sat beside the window.

I was nervous.

I did not like admitting that.

At sixty-eight, I had thought I would be past the stage of worrying about whether my family wanted me around.

But a lifetime of being someone's father did not make rejection painless.

I took Margaret's photograph from the shelf and wiped a small mark from the frame.

She had been good at saying difficult things plainly.

She would have told me that loving Logan did not require me to accept every choice he made.

She also would have reminded me that people sometimes learned late.

I could almost hear her saying that both things were true.

On Saturday, I arrived ten minutes early.

I chose a table near the window and ordered coffee.

Logan arrived first.

Chelsea followed him a few minutes later.

She wore a simple dark blue blouse and carried a small handbag.

She looked nervous.

I stood when they reached the table.

"Hello, Chelsea."

"Hello, Albert."

She did not try to hug me.

I was grateful for that.

We sat down.

For a few minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Logan cleared his throat.

"I asked us to meet because I don't want us to keep talking around each other."

He looked at Chelsea.

"I think we should each say what we need to say."

Chelsea folded her hands on the table.

"I'll start," she said.

She turned toward me.

"I am sorry for asking you to hide upstairs when we had guests."

I waited.

"I was worried about what people would think. I was more concerned about how the evening looked than about how you felt."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"I made you feel like you were something we had to keep out of sight. You weren't. You were Logan's father, and you were living in our home. You deserved to sit with us."

I felt something tighten in my chest.

It was the apology I had wanted on the night I packed my suitcases.

Hearing it now did not take me back to that night.

It only showed me that she could finally name what she had done.

"Thank you," I said.

She looked down at her hands.

"I also want to apologize for making it seem as if your clothes were the problem."

I glanced at the dark sleeves of my sweater.

"I wore what I liked."

"I know that now."

"You could have asked me to dress differently if there had been a real reason. You didn't have to send me away."

"I know."

She drew a breath.

"I can't change what happened. I know saying sorry doesn't make you trust me."

"No, it doesn't."

She nodded.

"I understand."

Logan looked between us.

"I should have said something that night," he said. "I knew it was wrong. I knew you had been helping us, and I knew you weren't asking for anything unreasonable. But I didn't want an argument with Chelsea in front of the guests."

He paused.

"So I made you pay for the peace I wanted."

The sentence sat heavily on the table.

I looked at my son.

He had finally found the words I had needed him to find.

"I was your father before I was your financial support," I said.

"I know."

"And I should not have had to prove that by leaving."

"No," he said. "You shouldn't have."

We sat quietly.

The café was busy around us.

A couple near the counter laughed over something on a phone.

A barista called out an order.

Life continued without noticing the small, difficult conversation happening beside the window.

Chelsea reached for her coffee.

"Can I ask you something?" she said.

"Yes."

"When you left, did you want us to feel what you had felt?"

I thought about it carefully.

"No. I wanted to stop feeling it myself."

She nodded slowly.

"I think I misunderstood that."

"You thought I was trying to punish you."

"Yes."

"I wasn't. I had reached a point where staying was hurting me more than leaving."

She looked at me.

"I understand that better now."

I hoped she did.

But I had learned not to measure change by the emotion of a single conversation.

Words were necessary.

They were not enough.

Logan asked whether I would ever consider visiting their house.

"I might," I said. "But I am not ready to move back."

"We aren't asking you to decide that today," he replied.

I watched him for a moment.

"Good."

Chelsea seemed to relax slightly.

"We could have you over for dinner sometime," she said. "Just us."

"I would consider that."

"And if you came, you wouldn't have to stay upstairs."

The remark was so direct that I almost smiled.

"I would hope not."

She gave a brief, embarrassed laugh.

"I deserved that."

"No," I said. "You deserved to hear the truth. That is different."

We talked about practical things after that.

Logan told me the company was adjusting to the new collateral requirements.

Some plans had been delayed.

They were reviewing costs and talking to the bank about the best way forward.

He did not make the conversation sound easy.

He also did not ask me to solve it.

I appreciated both facts.

Before we left, Chelsea asked if she could call me from time to time.

"Yes," I said. "But I want those calls to be about more than the situation with the money."

She nodded.

"I would like that too."

Logan walked with me to the café door.

"Thanks for meeting us, Dad."

"Thank you for coming."

He hesitated.

"I miss having you around."

"I miss you too."

His eyes grew wet, but he did not ask me to return.

That mattered.

I drove back to Irving and parked outside my apartment.

For a moment, I remained in the car with my hands resting on the steering wheel.

I had not received a promise that everything would be different.

I had not offered one either.

What we had done was smaller.

We had said the truth aloud.

We had allowed the other person to hear it without immediately trying to erase it.

That was not reconciliation.

It was the beginning of a possibility.

Inside, I made tea and sat near the window.

The plant had another small leaf opening at the top.

I touched the edge of the pot and thought about the three envelopes.

They had changed the financial arrangements.

They had forced Logan and Chelsea to face obligations they had treated as permanent conveniences.

But the envelopes had not taught them how to be a family.

That work had begun only when I stopped trying to pay for it.

I did not know whether Logan and Chelsea would become the people I hoped they could be.

I did know I could no longer make that decision for them.

I could give them room to change.

I could watch what they did with it.

And I could keep living my own life while I waited.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Left My Key on the Kitchen Counter, but I Finally Understood That Being a Father Did Not Mean I Had to Leave Myself Behind

Logan called the following Sunday afternoon.
