You had a good career. You were able to give Mom things I couldn't afford."

She wiped her cheeks.

"I kept comparing myself to you."

I didn't interrupt.

I had known Khloe was jealous of my success.

I hadn't understood how much she had allowed that jealousy to shape her choices.

She continued.

"Instead of dealing with how I felt, I started acting like I deserved what you had worked for."

Mom remained quiet.

Khloe looked down at her hands.

"And I used that as an excuse to treat you badly."

There was no dramatic confession after that.

She didn't ask Mom to forget everything.

She didn't blame Julian for every decision.

She simply sat there, crying quietly, waiting for a response.

Mom studied her for a long time.

Then she asked a question.

"What exactly are you sorry for?"

Khloe lifted her head.

I could see that the question had surprised her.

She swallowed.

"For taking your card."

Mom waited.

"For letting Julian move you out of your bedroom."

Khloe paused.

"For laughing when he embarrassed you."

Her eyes filled again.

"And for telling you not to call Natalie when you wanted to talk to her."

She took a shaky breath.

"I knew you were afraid. I knew you weren't happy. But I liked the way we were living, and I didn't want to lose it."

The room became very quiet.

That was the part I had wanted her to understand.

Not simply that she had made a mistake.

That she had known Mom was suffering and chosen her own comfort anyway.

Khloe looked toward our mother.

"I can't change what I did."

Mom didn't answer.

"I know you may never forgive me."

Mom folded her hands in her lap.

"I don't know what I feel yet."

Khloe nodded.

For once, she didn't argue.

She didn't ask Mom to hurry.

She didn't tell her that family should forgive family.

She simply sat in the chair and accepted the silence.

After a while, Mom moved her chair a little closer.

Not much.

Just enough to show that she was willing to remain in the conversation.

It wasn't complete forgiveness.

It wasn't a promise that everything would return to normal.

It was a beginning.

I watched them and thought about how many times in the past Mom had been expected to repair a family argument by ignoring what had happened.

This time, she was allowed to take her time.

Khloe stayed for a little while longer.

Before leaving, she thanked Mom for letting her visit.

Mom nodded.

She didn't rush to hug her.

She didn't tell her everything was fine.

She simply walked her to the door.

After Khloe left, Mom returned to the living room.

She sat beside the garden window and looked outside.

"How do you feel?" I asked.

She thought about it.

"Sad."

I waited.

"And relieved."

She turned toward me.

"I thought I had to choose between loving my daughter and admitting what she did to me."

I sat down beside her.

"You don't."

She nodded slowly.

"I know that now."

We didn't talk about Khloe for the rest of the afternoon.

We made lunch.

We washed the dishes.

Mom watered a few plants in the garden.

Ordinary things.

But I could tell the visit had taken a great deal out of her.

She was not ready to pretend that everything was repaired.

Neither was I.

Julian's legal case continued separately.

The investigation had uncovered additional financial records, and he eventually accepted a plea agreement following the investigation.

Restitution and civil proceedings followed.

Mom and I did not attend his sentencing.

We had spent enough time letting his actions determine what happened in our lives.

That day, we went out for lunch instead.

Mom chose her favorite pie for dessert.

I watched her take the first bite and smile.

It was such a small thing.

But it felt important.

For two years, she had lived as though someone else had the right to decide whether she deserved comfort.

Now she was sitting across from me in a restaurant, ordering what she wanted without looking around for permission.

Our conversation turned to ordinary things.

The weather.

A neighbor's garden.

A television program Mom had been watching.

At one point, our waitress made a joke, and Mom laughed so hard she had to put down her fork.

I laughed with her.

And for a moment, I could see the woman I remembered before I had found her on the patio.

Not exactly the same.

She had been hurt.

She had learned things she should never have needed to learn.

But she was still there.

Still able to laugh.

Still able to enjoy a meal.

Still able to decide what she wanted from the day.

When we returned home, she walked through the front door and took off her shoes.

Then she went to the kitchen to make tea.

I followed her.

She placed two cups on the counter.

"Do you want some?"

I smiled.

"Yes, please."

She handed me a cup.

No hesitation.

No apology.

No fear that asking me for something might be too much.

I held the warm cup between my hands and looked at her.

For the first time in a long time, I felt that we were beginning to understand what it meant to be safe.

Not because nothing bad could ever happen again.

Because neither of us had to pretend the truth wasn't there.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Thought the Deed Had Been the Only Thing Protecting My Mother, Until Harrison Brought Me an Envelope She Had Written Long Before I Came Home

Months passed before Mom agreed to see Khloe again.
