He used to buy it on Sundays."

We made coffee and sat in the living room.

For a while, we talked about his work.

Then he looked toward the study.

"Could I see Dad's letters sometime?"

I considered the request.

"Which letters?"

"The ones he left you."

I watched him carefully.

"Why?"

He looked embarrassed.

"I want to understand what he was thinking. I keep remembering how he tried to warn me about things, and I acted as though he didn't understand my situation."

I didn't answer immediately.

The letters were personal.

Thomas had written them for me, and I wasn't obligated to share every word.

But some of what he had written concerned Daniel.

I decided to show him the letter about taking responsibility.

We went into the study.

I took the letter from the drawer and handed it to him.

He read it slowly.

I sat near the window while he moved his eyes across the page.

When he finished, he didn't speak for several moments.

Then he folded the paper carefully and handed it back.

"He knew me better than I thought."

"Your father paid attention."

Daniel stared at the desk.

"I used to think he was being difficult when he asked questions about money."

"He wanted to understand what was happening."

"I know that now."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I kept telling myself that if I could get through one more month, everything would be fine."

I listened.

"Then another month came. And another. I was always waiting for something to change."

"Did it?"

"Not until I changed what I was doing."

He gave a small, tired smile.

I thought about the four hundred and ten thousand dollars.

The loan had been a substantial amount, but the money itself had never been the only issue.

Thomas had trusted Daniel to tell him the truth.

Daniel had allowed embarrassment to become a reason for silence.

Then he had let that silence grow until it affected the entire family.

"Have you spoken to Andrew recently?" I asked.

"Yes. The repayment arrangements are in place, and I've been keeping up with them."

"Good."

"I want to finish paying Dad back."

I nodded.

"I think that's the right thing to do."

He looked toward the window.

"I don't expect you to help me."

I met his eyes.

"That is your responsibility, Daniel."

"I know."

For once, he didn't sound resentful.

He sounded as though he had finally accepted the distinction.

We talked a little longer.

Before leaving, he asked whether I would mind if he came back another day to look through some family photographs.

I told him that would be fine.

After he left, I returned the letter to the drawer.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt hopeful.

Hope was different from certainty.

I could hope that Daniel would continue changing without assuming that every difficult lesson had already been learned.

Over the next several months, he kept his commitments.

He worked.

He managed his expenses.

He continued making the agreed payments.

Andrew kept the necessary records, and the estate matters proceeded through the established arrangements.

There were no dramatic announcements.

No sudden transformation.

Just a series of ordinary decisions made a little more responsibly than before.

I found myself thinking about Thomas's old car.

He had kept it because it still worked.

But he had also maintained it.

He had checked the oil, replaced worn parts, and taken it for repairs when something needed attention.

He hadn't simply expected it to last forever without care.

Relationships were not so different.

Love could endure many things.

But it needed honesty and effort.

It needed people to notice when something was damaged and take responsibility for repairing it.

I didn't know whether Daniel would always remember that.

I hoped he would.

One afternoon, he came to the penthouse with a small box of photographs.

We spread them across the dining table.

There were pictures of birthdays, holidays, and family gatherings.

Daniel picked up one showing Thomas standing beside the old car.

"He looks so young here."

"He was."

"How old was I?"

"About six."

Daniel smiled.

"I remember sitting in the back seat and asking him a hundred questions."

"He answered all of them."

"Even the silly ones?"

"Especially the silly ones."

We laughed.

Then Daniel found a photograph of Thomas holding him as a baby.

He stared at it for a long time.

"I don't remember him being like that."

"You were too little."

"He looks happy."

"He was."

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

"I think I spent too much time worrying about whether Dad thought I was successful."

I looked at him.

"Your father was proud of you."

"Even when my business was struggling?"

"Yes. He worried about your choices, but that wasn't the same as being ashamed of you."

Daniel looked down.

"I wish I'd understood that."

"So do I."

We returned to the photographs.

I told him about the day the picture had been taken.

Thomas had spent the morning assembling a crib and the afternoon trying to repair a cupboard.

He had been tired, but when I took the photograph, he was smiling.

That was the part of Thomas I wanted Daniel to remember.

Not the size of his estate.

Not the money he had accumulated.

The man who had spent an evening putting together a crib because he wanted his son to have a safe place to sleep.

The man who had repaired furniture rather than replacing it.

The man who had quietly arranged a future for his wife because he knew she had spent too many years worrying about everyone else.

Before Daniel left, he helped me put the photographs back into their box.

He placed the picture of Thomas with the old car on top.

"I'll keep a copy of this one," he said.

"Of course."

He carried the box to the door.

Then he turned back.

"Mom, thank you for letting me come."

I smiled.

"You're welcome."

He didn't ask whether I was proud of him.

He didn't ask for anything else.

After he left, I stood beside the window and watched the river.

I thought about the woman I had been a year earlier.

I had believed that my only choices were to keep giving or lose my family.

Now I understood that there was another possibility.

I could love people while allowing them to grow.

I could offer advice without taking over.

I could forgive without pretending that the past had never happened.

And I could let Daniel become responsible for his own life.

That was not a rejection of him.

It was a chance for both of us to have a healthier relationship.

I returned to the study and placed Thomas's photograph beside the wedding picture.

Then I closed the drawer.

I didn't need to keep rereading the letter to remember its meaning.

I was finally beginning to live it.

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The House Was Gone, but the Memories Remained, and I Learned That Starting Again Did Not Mean Abandoning the Life I Had Loved

Daniel's visits became more regular.
