3 – He Asked Me to Guarantee His Future at the Company While His Own Decisions Were Being Examined, and I Finally Understood What He Believed He Deserved

By the time our divorce mediation reached its final session, Julian had stopped pretending that we were trying to save our marriage.

We were negotiating what he would receive when it ended.

He arrived late.

I noticed the time because Eleanor had already checked her watch twice.

Julian came through the door wearing a dark suit and carrying a leather folder.

There was a faint scent of perfume on his jacket.

I recognized it from the evenings he claimed he had been working late with Lila.

I didn't mention it.

We had reached the stage where another argument would accomplish nothing.

Eleanor sat beside me.

Across the table, Julian placed his folder down and loosened his tie.

He looked tired, but not heartbroken.

He looked like a man who had been inconvenienced by a negotiation that was taking longer than expected.

His attorney began reviewing the proposed settlement.

The jointly owned lakeside condominium was one of the main points.

Julian wanted to keep it.

I agreed.

He wanted a substantial share of our marital savings.

After reviewing the figures, I agreed to that as well.

I wasn't trying to leave him with nothing.

I wanted the divorce completed without spending the next several years arguing over every account and possession we had accumulated together.

The company was different.

Ashford Medical was not a marital asset simply because Julian had worked there during our marriage.

I had inherited my controlling shares from my father.

I had retained them before our wedding.

The property that would soon become the center of Vivian's anger had also belonged to me before Julian and I married.

Our prenuptial agreement documented those arrangements.

The agreement had been reaffirmed during the divorce.

Julian knew about it.

He had signed it.

He simply seemed to believe that I would never enforce its terms against him.

During mediation, he demanded a greater financial settlement and threatened a prolonged legal fight if I refused to surrender corporate control.

I listened.

Eleanor listened.

When he finished, I asked him whether he wanted to explain how he had calculated the amount he was demanding.

He gave me a cold look.

“I'm entitled to a fair share.”

“You are receiving the assets we agreed to divide.”

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

He wanted the company.

Not necessarily because he loved it.

Because it represented power, status, and the future he had imagined for himself.

He had become accustomed to standing at the front of the room while other people listened.

He had grown comfortable being introduced as the man who built Ashford Medical.

The possibility of losing that position seemed to frighten him more than losing our marriage.

I looked down at the settlement papers.

Then I signed.

Eleanor had prepared a certified schedule identifying the company shares and real estate that remained my separate property.

The document was placed beneath the settlement materials.

Julian's attorney had access to it.

The terms were not hidden.

They were simply not what Julian wanted to discuss.

He glanced at the signed pages and appeared satisfied.

Vivian would later treat my agreement to the settlement as proof that I had surrendered everything.

She would be wrong.

But I didn't correct that misunderstanding during the mediation.

I had stopped believing that every false assumption required an immediate response.

Sometimes people revealed more when they thought they had already won.

Before leaving, Julian took another document from his folder.

He pushed it across the table.

“I want you to sign this too.”

Eleanor picked it up.

It was a proposed employment agreement.

Julian was asking for a five-year guarantee as CEO, along with substantial severance protection if he was removed.

I looked at him.

“Why are we discussing your employment agreement during a divorce settlement?”

“Because I need certainty.”

Eleanor read the document again.

“The board controls executive appointments,” she said. “Your wife cannot personally promise you continued employment.”

Julian smiled.

“The board supports me.”

“Then you shouldn't need Claire's signature.”

His smile faded slightly.

I watched him gather his papers.

He left the proposed agreement on the table.

I wondered whether he had brought it because he genuinely believed I would sign it or because he wanted to remind me how much control he thought he had.

Either way, I didn't sign.

A few days later, Vivian organized a celebration.

I found out through photographs posted online.

The images showed champagne glasses, expensive clothing, and Julian standing beside Lila.

One photograph showed him kissing her beneath a banner announcing a new beginning.

I looked at the picture longer than I intended.

There was no shock left in it for me.

Only a familiar feeling of having been made foolish.

I had spent years believing that if I worked hard enough, listened carefully enough, and gave our marriage enough room to breathe, Julian would eventually recognize what we had built together.

He had recognized it.

He simply believed he deserved more of it than I did.

The celebration took place at the limestone mansion where Vivian had lived for years.

She often called it the Ashford family estate.

She had used the word ancestral more than once.

It made the property sound as though generations of her family had walked through its hallways.

That wasn't true.

I had purchased the mansion through my holding company two years before I married Julian.

The property had been an investment.

It was large, expensive to maintain, and far more formal than the kind of home I would have chosen for myself.

But I had liked the grounds.

I had liked the tall windows and the way the afternoon light reached the rooms at the back of the house.

After Vivian's second husband died, she had needed somewhere to live.

I allowed her to occupy the mansion without paying rent.

At the time, I believed it was a generous arrangement.

I didn't demand that she thank me.

I didn't ask her to treat me differently.

I only expected her to understand that I had offered her a place to live because I cared about Julian and wanted to help his family.

She never saw it that way.

She spoke about the property as though I had been fortunate enough to gain access to something that belonged to her.

When she invited people over, she introduced herself as the lady of the house.

When guests complimented the architecture, she told stories about the Ashfords' long history in the area.

I let her.

I didn't need credit for owning a building.

I wanted a peaceful family.

That was another mistake.

I had confused generosity with an agreement to remain silent forever.

Julian knew the property belonged to my holding company.

The ownership records had been reviewed during the divorce.

The prenuptial agreement protected it.

He knew the relevant facts.

He simply assumed I would never make him face them.

I learned about the preservation foundation through a proposal Eleanor received from its representatives.

The foundation wanted to acquire a historic property and convert it into a public arts center.

The mansion had the space they needed.

Its large rooms could become exhibition galleries.

The grounds could accommodate community events.

The old ballroom could be used for workshops and children's programs.

I read the proposal in my office.

For the first time in months, I felt interested in something that had nothing to do with Julian.

I imagined the building filled with people who came there to create something.

I imagined children carrying paintings through the hallways.

I imagined the house becoming useful rather than simply expensive.

The foundation made an offer.

We reviewed the terms.

The buyers were informed that Vivian was occupying the property.

They did not demand that she leave immediately.

Instead, they agreed to a lawful sixty-day move-out period, provided the required notice was delivered in advance.

I accepted.

I wanted the sale handled properly.

I didn't want to throw Vivian into the street.

I didn't want to use the divorce as an excuse to ignore the law.

I wanted the property transferred, the occupancy addressed, and the next chapter of my life to begin without another argument.

The closing was arranged for the morning of the divorce hearing.

That timing was practical.

It also meant I would no longer have to wonder whether Julian expected me to keep paying for a property he believed his family controlled.

The buyers received the relevant information.

The sale documents were prepared.

The notice was sent through the proper channels.

Eleanor confirmed that the arrangements were complete.

I kept a copy of the closing documents in a sealed envelope.

Then I placed the envelope in the drawer beside my father's old note.

Never confuse the keys with the deed.

I thought about the words again.

Vivian had the keys.

She had the rooms, the furniture, the long dining table, and the view across the grounds.

She had spent years moving through the house as if its walls had been built for her.

But the legal ownership had never changed.

That evening, Julian sent me a message.

Mom wants the keys back tomorrow. Don't make this embarrassing.

I read it once.

Then I read it again.

He wasn't asking whether I had made arrangements for the property.

He wasn't asking whether his mother had received the notice.

He was telling me how he expected me to behave.

I placed my phone on the desk.

For a moment, I considered replying.

I could have explained the sale.

I could have reminded him that the notice had been delivered.

I could have told him to speak to his attorney.

But I decided against it.

The documents were already in place.

The legal process was already moving.

There was nothing to gain by arguing over text messages.

I took the sealed envelope from the drawer and placed it beside my keys.

The keys had once represented the life I thought I was building with Julian.

Now they were simply keys.

I looked at them for a few seconds before turning off the office light.

By morning, Vivian would have the information she needed to understand that the mansion was no longer hers to claim.

And Julian would have to confront the difference between the position he held and the ownership he had imagined.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Outside the Courthouse, His Mother Demanded the House and He Demanded His Job, but Neither Had Prepared for the Calls Waiting on Their Phones

By the time our divorce mediation reached its final session, Julian had stopped pretending that we were trying to save our marriage.
