3 – The Man Who Examined Our House Gave Us a Price That Could Save Everything We Had Built or Leave Us With Nothing

The next step was finding someone who knew how to move a house.

Until then, my father's suggestion had been an idea.

A way out that sounded almost too unusual to take seriously.

Now we had to find out whether it could actually happen.

I kept thinking about the size of our home.

Twelve hundred square feet.

Two bedrooms for the children.

Our own bedroom.

A kitchen that always seemed to need cleaning.

A living room where we had spent eleven years watching our family grow.

It wasn't a building we could simply pick up and carry.

At least, that was how I understood it.

But my father believed there were professionals who handled this kind of work.

He encouraged us to contact one.

Jake agreed.

We needed an honest assessment, not another assumption.

If moving the house was impossible, we needed to know that before we spent time imagining it.

If it was possible, we needed to know what it would cost.

The house mover was named Arnie Kessler.

When he came to inspect the property, I watched him closely.

I wanted him to tell us the idea was ridiculous.

That might have been disappointing, but at least we could stop wondering.

Instead, he examined the house and considered what would be involved in relocating it.

He looked at the structure.

He assessed the work that would have to be done before it could be moved.

He considered the challenges of getting the house from its existing location to the new property.

I followed him around, trying to understand what he was seeing.

Jake asked questions.

My father listened carefully.

Arnie didn't promise that the job would be easy.

He treated it as a serious undertaking that required professional equipment, careful preparation, and planning.

That alone made me feel better.

We weren't dealing with a fantasy anymore.

We were discussing an actual project.

Then Arnie gave us his initial estimate.

Twenty-three thousand eight hundred dollars.

I remember repeating the number silently.

Twenty-three thousand eight hundred.

It was a large amount, but I tried to remain hopeful.

We had savings.

My father had offered to help.

Perhaps the move would cost less than we feared.

Then the other expenses entered the discussion.

The new foundation.

Utility connections.

Permits.

Preparations required at the destination.

Those costs would have to be considered alongside the moving work itself.

When everything was included, the total would exceed thirty-eight thousand dollars.

My hope changed shape.

It didn't disappear immediately.

It simply became harder to hold.

More than thirty-eight thousand dollars was not money we could casually find.

We had nineteen thousand dollars saved.

That was the result of years of trying to be careful.

We had saved when we could.

We had avoided unnecessary purchases.

We had put money aside for emergencies and future needs.

Nineteen thousand dollars had always seemed like a meaningful safety net.

Now it covered only part of what we needed.

I looked at Jake.

He was doing the same calculation.

The difference was too large to ignore.

Even if we used every dollar of our savings, we would still be short by more than nineteen thousand dollars.

And that was before considering whether unexpected costs might arise.

I had spent weeks worrying about whether we could afford to lose our house.

Now I was worrying about whether we could afford to keep it.

The problem had changed.

It had not become smaller.

When Arnie finished explaining the estimate, we thanked him.

I tried to sound calm.

I didn't want him to think we had expected him to perform a complicated job for nothing.

We understood that moving a house required specialized work.

We also understood that understanding the price did not make us capable of paying it.

After he left, I returned to the kitchen.

The estimate stayed in my mind.

Thirty-eight thousand dollars.

I thought about the money we had already paid Gordon.

Sixty-six thousand dollars over eleven years.

The contrast was difficult to accept.

We had paid him faithfully for the right to occupy the land.

Now we needed another substantial sum just to move our house somewhere we could feel secure.

Jake sat down at the table.

“We don't have enough.”

I sat opposite him.

“No.”

We didn't try to make the numbers look better.

We didn't tell ourselves that everything would work out simply because we wanted it to.

The shortfall was real.

So was the danger of doing nothing.

For a while, we discussed what we could possibly change.

Could we postpone the move?

Could we reduce the cost?

Could we find another arrangement?

Every possibility seemed to lead back to the same problem.

We needed a solution that protected our family without forcing us into a financial situation we could not manage.

I thought about asking my father for more help.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

He had already given us the idea that might save the house.

His property had given us another place to consider.

Now we were looking at a cost that could be difficult for us to cover.

I didn't want our problem to become his burden.

Jake understood.

“We shouldn't ask him to pay for everything.”

“I know.”

Neither of us wanted to treat his offer as an obligation.

He had offered us land.

He had encouraged us to investigate moving the house.

He had not promised to solve every financial problem that followed.

Still, I knew we needed to speak honestly with him.

We told him about Arnie's estimate.

We explained that the initial moving cost was twenty-three thousand eight hundred dollars, but the complete project would exceed thirty-eight thousand.

We told him how much we had saved.

Nineteen thousand dollars.

I waited for him to react.

I expected him to look disappointed.

Perhaps he would tell us that the plan was too expensive and that we needed to consider another option.

Instead, he listened.

He had already seen what Gordon's claim was doing to us.

He knew we weren't trying to make a point or punish anyone.

We were trying to protect our home.

Then Dad offered to cover the difference.

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn't find a response.

He had offered us a practical solution, and now he was offering to help make it possible.

“Dad, that's too much.”

He shook his head.

“I would rather help you relocate the home than watch you lose what you've worked so hard to build.”

I looked away.

I didn't want him to see how close I was to crying.

There was relief in what he had said.

There was also shame.

We were adults.

We had children of our own.

We had worked for years to become financially independent, and now we needed help from my father because we had trusted Jake's father.

I knew Dad wasn't blaming us.

That almost made the feeling worse.

He was helping because he cared about us, not because we had found a way to deserve it.

Jake thanked him.

My father didn't make a speech.

He didn't tell us how much we owed him emotionally.

He simply made it clear that we didn't have to abandon the plan because of the financial gap.

I took a long breath.

The move was still going to cost more than we could comfortably afford.

But now it was possible.

That night, I walked through the house alone.

I stopped in the kitchen.

I looked at the drawing Hailey had put on the refrigerator.

I passed the pantry doorframe and saw the children's height marks.

I stood in the living room where Hailey had taken her first steps.

Then I went outside and looked at the yellow siding.

The house suddenly seemed different to me.

For weeks, it had felt like something Gordon might take away.

Now it felt like something we had a chance to protect.

Not by winning an argument.

Not by forcing him to change his mind.

By moving it.

Three miles.

That was all the distance between the property where we had lived for eleven years and the property my father had offered us.

Three miles seemed small compared with everything we had been through.

But those miles would separate our home from Gordon's land.

They would give us a new foundation.

A new place to connect the utilities.

A new address for the life we wanted to continue living.

And, most importantly, they would give us a chance to stop wondering whether the man who owned the ground beneath us could claim the roof above our children.

I knew the move would be difficult.

I knew it would be expensive.

I knew there was no guarantee that moving the building would repair the damage Gordon had done to his relationship with his son.

But we weren't moving to teach him a lesson.

We were moving because we had learned one ourselves.

Trusting family did not mean we should leave our family's security unprotected.

The next time Jake spoke to his father, he would have to tell him what we had decided.

I wasn't looking forward to that conversation.

Gordon had already laughed at the idea of us moving.

I knew he might see it as an insult.

He might believe we were trying to embarrass him.

He might think we would change our minds once we understood how much work the project required.

But the decision was no longer an idea we could dismiss.

We had an estimate.

We had a destination.

We had a way to cover the cost.

And we had made our choice.

Source: <a
