We're doing it because our children need a home that nobody can threaten to take from them.”

Gordon folded his arms.

I could imagine his expression even though I wasn't standing beside Jake.

He had always been certain that his position was obvious.

He owned the land.

He believed that settled the matter.

The possibility that we would move the house instead of accepting his claim seemed absurd to him.

“You'll come crawling back before Thanksgiving,” he said.

Jake told me about that remark later.

I remember how carefully he repeated it.

He wasn't trying to make his father sound foolish.

He was trying to tell me what had happened without letting his anger take over the conversation again.

I asked him whether Gordon had said anything else.

Jake shook his head.

“Not really.”

I knew he had hoped for something different.

Perhaps he had expected his father to ask us to reconsider.

Perhaps some part of him had wanted Gordon to recognize that eleven years of payments meant more than permission to live on a piece of land.

But Gordon had not changed his position.

So we continued with ours.

The preparations moved forward.

There were details to settle before the house could be relocated.

The new property had to be ready.

The foundation and utility connections needed attention.

The move itself required professional handling.

I began thinking about our belongings and what we needed to prepare.

The children still had their usual routines.

They played in the yard.

They left their shoes near the door.

They asked ordinary questions about school and dinner.

For a while, I wondered how much to tell them.

I didn't want them to believe that something terrible had happened to their home.

I also didn't want to promise that everything would remain exactly the same.

The truth was that things were going to change.

The house would be in a different place.

We would have to get used to new surroundings.

But their rooms, their familiar belongings, and the memories inside the walls would go with us.

That mattered.

I wanted them to understand that moving did not mean losing everything.

As the October morning approached, I found myself checking the house more often.

I looked at the corners of the rooms.

I noticed the windows and doors.

I walked past the pantry and glanced at the pencil marks.

Some were faint.

Others were darker because we had pressed the pencil more firmly against the wood.

Each one recorded a small moment in our children's lives.

I wondered whether the move would change anything about those marks.

I hoped not.

I wanted them to remain exactly as they were.

Not because the house needed to stay in one place, but because I wanted the children to carry a piece of their childhood into whatever came next.

The evening before the move, I stood in the living room and looked around.

I had spent eleven years in that house.

I knew where the floor creaked.

I knew which window caught the afternoon light.

I knew how the kitchen sounded when Jake washed dishes while I put things away.

I knew where Cole left his bicycle and where Hailey liked to sit when she wanted to talk.

There were many things I had once taken for granted.

Now I noticed them all.

I felt sad.

That surprised me.

We were not abandoning the house.

We were saving it.

Still, I understood that leaving a place could hurt even when leaving was the right decision.

The land carried memories too.

The driveway where Cole had learned to ride his bicycle.

The yard where the children had played.

The road we had traveled every day for years.

We were leaving those things behind.

But we were taking the home itself.

I repeated that thought to myself until it felt real.

We were taking the home.

The next morning, neighbors gathered along the county road.

Word had spread that our house was going to be moved.

Some stood near their vehicles.

Others watched from the roadside.

I understood why they were curious.

It wasn't every day that a family arranged to relocate an entire house.

Even after all the planning, I found it difficult to believe it was happening.

The equipment was in place.

The crew prepared to lift the building from its foundation.

I stood with Jake and the children, watching the work begin.

The house that had always seemed immovable started to rise.

For a moment, I forgot to breathe.

I had imagined this scene many times, but imagination had not prepared me for seeing it happen.

The building was no longer resting where it had stood for eleven years.

The space beneath it became visible.

The house we had thought of as permanent was being separated from the ground.

I reached for Jake's hand.

He held mine tightly.

Neither of us said anything.

The workers continued carefully.

The house was lifted onto the equipment that would carry it down the road.

Then the movement began.

Slowly.

So slowly that I could barely believe the building was actually traveling.

Our yellow-sided house was moving away from the property where we had raised our children.

Hailey began cheering.

Cole joined her.

They were excited by the sight of their home traveling down the road.

I tried to smile at them.

Their excitement helped me hold on to the part of the day that mattered most.

We were together.

The house was coming with us.

The future was uncertain, but we were no longer standing helplessly in front of a problem someone else had created.

Neighbors followed in pickup trucks.

People watched as the convoy moved along the county road.

I kept looking at the house.

I couldn't stop.

Every few moments, I expected something to go wrong.

The building was enormous compared with the vehicles around it.

It seemed impossible that it could travel through the familiar roads without incident.

Yet the crew continued carefully.

Then I saw Gordon.

He had appeared near the route.

At first, I watched him from a distance.

I couldn't tell whether he had come to criticize us again or simply to see the move for himself.

He stood near the road as the house approached.

His arms were no longer folded.

He looked different from the man who had sat at our kitchen table and declared that the house belonged to him.

He seemed uncertain.

For a moment, I wondered whether he was finally beginning to understand what we had decided to do.

The house moved closer.

Gordon stepped toward it.

Then he reached out and placed his hand against the yellow siding.

I watched his face change.

His fingers rested against the surface as if he recognized something that the rest of us could not see.

He wasn't looking at the property line.

He wasn't looking at the ground beneath the house.

He was looking at the building itself.

Then he spoke so quietly that I could barely hear him.

“Ruthann picked that color.”

Ruthann was Jake's mother.

She had been gone for years.

And as Gordon stood beside the moving house, touching the yellow siding, I realized that the building meant something to him too.

Source: <a
