PART 11 – Emma’s Teacher Was Hiding a Secret, but the Truth About Her Connection to Mark Was Nothing Like We Expected

The room seemed to tilt.

Emma's teacher sat across from us with tears running down her face.

“I never wanted any of this.”

The officer remained standing.

“Then tell us everything.”

She looked at me.

“I was threatened.”

“By Mark?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because of my brother.”

I frowned.

“What does your brother have to do with this?”

She lowered her head.

“My brother used to work for Mark.”

Travis looked at her.

“Who?”

She gave his name.

Travis recognized it.

“Jason.”

I had never heard the name.

The teacher explained that Jason had worked at one of the venues where Travis's former band performed.

He had helped Mark with bookings.

When the money disappeared, Jason was questioned.

He denied involvement.

Then he vanished.

“He wasn't innocent,” she said.

“But he wasn't the one who stole the money.”

“Who was?”

“Mark.”

She wiped her face.

“My brother found out.”

“And Mark threatened him?”

“Yes.”

The officer asked why she had become involved.

“He knew where I worked.”

She looked at me.

“He knew I taught Emma.”

My stomach tightened.

“He told me that if I didn't help him, my brother would disappear.”

“What did he make you do?”

“Give him schedules.”

“Emma's schedule?”

“Yes.”

“Pickup times?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to know when Travis was alone.”

I looked at Travis.

“He wasn't after Emma.”

“No.”

“He was after you.”

“Yes.”

The teacher nodded.

“He wanted to know when Travis would be vulnerable.”

The officer asked why the photographs included our home.

“Because Mark believed Travis had hidden the remaining documents.”

I looked at Travis.

“And the note in Emma's desk?”

“He wanted Travis to understand that he could reach him anywhere.”

My stomach turned.

The teacher continued.

“I was supposed to place the notes where Travis would find them.”

“But you didn't know he would bring them home.”

“No.”

“Did you know about the photograph?”

She shook her head.

“Mark told me to provide schedules. Nothing more.”

The officer asked how Mark contacted her.

“Through a prepaid phone.”

“Do you still have it?”

She nodded.

It was hidden in a locked drawer.

The police recovered it.

There were messages from Mark.

One said:

KEEP THE CHILD AWAY FROM HIM.

Another:

I NEED THE RECORDS.

Another:

IF HE GOES TO THE POLICE, MAKE HIM THINK THE FAMILY IS NEXT.

I felt sick.

Ryan took my hand.

The officer read the messages carefully.

“There's enough here to move forward.”

Then the teacher looked at me.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Mark knows about you.”

My throat tightened.

“What does he know?”

“That Travis cares about your family.”

I looked at Travis.

He didn't move.

“He thought if he frightened you, Travis would surrender the records.”

The plan was suddenly clear.

Mark had chosen our family because Travis cared about us.

He had seen the relationship between Travis and Emma.

He had watched Ryan.

He had understood that fear could be used more effectively than force.

But he had underestimated one thing.

We were no longer divided.

That had been the weakness he expected to exploit.

It had become the thing protecting us.

The officer received a call.

He stepped outside.

When he returned, he looked at Travis.

“The storage unit was searched.”

“By who?”

“Someone got there before us.”

Ryan's face went pale.

“What?”

“The documents are gone.”

Travis closed his eyes.

“Then he has them.”

The officer shook his head.

“Not necessarily.”

He held up a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a small torn piece of paper.

“Found inside the unit.”

Travis stared.

“What does it say?”

The officer handed it to him.

It was written in Derek's handwriting.

IF THEY TAKE THE COPIES, THE ORIGINAL IS STILL SAFE.

Travis looked at me.

“Where?”

Derek had mentioned the original ledger.

The rehearsal building.

We immediately went there.

The building had been abandoned for months.

The police searched the rooms.

Nothing.

Then Travis noticed the old stage.

He walked behind it.

There was a loose floorboard.

He lifted it.

Inside was a metal box.

The original ledger.

The officer opened it carefully.

Every transaction was there.

Names.

Amounts.

Dates.

Signatures.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Mark.

But there was another name.

Jason.

The teacher's brother.

Travis looked at the officer.

“Jason wasn't innocent.”

“No,” the officer said.

“But he wasn't the mastermind.”

“No.”

The ledger showed Jason had accepted payments.

But the larger transfers went to an account controlled by Mark.

There was enough evidence.

But the officer pointed to the final page.

“What is this?”

A handwritten note.

TRAVIS KNOWS WHERE THE LAST PAYMENT WENT.

Travis stared.

“I don't.”

The officer looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Then Ryan spoke.

“I might.”

Everyone turned.

Ryan took a breath.

“The night we argued outside this building, Mark approached me.”

I stared at my husband.

“You never told me that.”

“I know.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked whether Travis had told me about a payment.”

“Which payment?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I didn't know what he meant.”

The officer asked what Mark looked like.

Ryan described him.

Then he remembered something.

“He was wearing a black wristband.”

The same symbol.

The same mark.

The officer nodded.

“Now we have a connection.”

Then a sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

We froze.

The police moved toward the entrance.

A vehicle sped away.

The officer ran outside.

Travis followed.

Ryan stayed with me.

For a few seconds, we heard nothing.

Then the officer returned.

“It's him.”

“Mark?”

“Yes.”

“Did you catch him?”

“No.”

“But we got the vehicle.”

Travis came back.

His face was pale.

“He saw us.”

The officer nodded.

“He knew we had found the ledger.”

I looked at the book.

“So what happens now?”

The officer looked at us.

“We protect the evidence.”

“And Mark?”

“We find him.”

That night, we returned home under police escort.

Emma was with my mother.

I couldn't stop thinking about the teacher.

She had helped Mark, but only because she was protecting her brother.

Angela had helped too, because she was afraid.

Derek had hidden because he didn't trust anyone.

Ryan had hidden his fears because he didn't want to look weak.

Travis had hidden information because he didn't want to frighten us.

Every secret had begun with someone believing silence would protect another person.

And every secret had made things worse.

Before going to bed, I checked my phone.

There was one final message.

No photograph.

No threat.

Just a location.

The old bridge outside town.

And beneath it:

COME ALONE, TRAVIS.

Travis read it.

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Travis looked at him.

“I wasn't planning to.”

The police were called.

But before anyone could decide what to do, another message arrived.

BRING THE LEDGER OR YOUR NEIGHBOR GETS HURT.

Travis went completely still.

I looked at Ryan.

“Which neighbor?”

Then we realized.

The message wasn't about Travis.

It was about the person who had been helping us.

The neighbor with the security cameras.

The man who had given us the footage.

He had been taken.
