PART 6 – Rachel’s Warning Led Me Back to the Estate, Where One Locked Drawer Contained the Missing Piece Michael Thought I Would Never Find

I didn't sleep that night.

Rachel's final sentence kept circling through my head.

Documents with your name on them.

By morning, I had decided I wasn't going to the estate alone.

Diane agreed.

Tom agreed.

We drove there together just after sunrise.

The property looked different in daylight.

It was larger than I remembered from the photographs, surrounded by tall trees and a stone wall that separated it from the road.

A real estate agent had once shown Michael through the house.

Now it felt less like a dream home and more like evidence.

Tom unlocked the front door.

He had obtained access through the legal process surrounding the property.

We entered quietly.

The rooms were mostly empty.

A few boxes stood along one wall.

There were no personal photographs.

No decorations.

No sign of a family preparing to live there.

It looked exactly like what it was.

A place intended for escape.

Diane walked through the rooms while Tom checked the office.

I followed.

The office contained a desk, a filing cabinet, and several unopened boxes.

“Here,” Tom called.

He stood beside a cabinet.

The top drawer was locked.

“Rachel said there was a folder,” I said.

Diane examined the lock.

“Don't force it.”

Tom looked at her.

“What do we do?”

“We document it and have the appropriate person open it.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something beneath the desk.

A small black notebook.

I picked it up.

Inside were handwritten numbers.

Dates.

Transfers.

Initials.

My initials appeared several times.

So did Rachel's.

And Michael's.

I handed it to Diane.

She read silently.

“This is useful.”

“How useful?”

“Very.”

The notebook appeared to track money moving between accounts.

Several entries matched the transfers we had already discovered.

But one line didn't.

A large amount had been moved into a different account.

The destination was identified only by a number.

No company name.

No bank name.

Just digits.

Diane photographed the page.

“We need to identify this.”

Tom looked around.

“Could it be the other account Rachel mentioned?”

“It could.”

We searched the office carefully.

Inside one box, we found copies of property contracts.

Inside another, a folder containing correspondence between Michael and a financial adviser.

Then Tom found a second notebook.

This one belonged to Rachel.

It contained dates and reminders.

One entry read:

“Ask M. about S. account.”

Another:

“Need confirmation before leaving.”

And another:

“Tom cannot know.”

My stomach tightened.

Rachel had known.

She had known enough to understand the danger.

I sat down.

Diane looked at me.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

I wasn't.

But I was no longer surprised.

That was the strangest part.

Every new discovery simply filled another empty space in a picture I already hated.

We left the estate before noon.

On the drive home, Tom received a call.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”

He held the phone away.

“Rachel.”

“Don't answer.”

He looked at me.

Then answered anyway.

“What?”

Rachel spoke loudly enough that I could hear her.

“They found it.”

Tom's eyes narrowed.

“Found what?”

“The second account.”

I leaned forward.

“How do you know?”

Rachel continued speaking.

“I saw the messages.”

“From whom?”

“Michael.”

Tom looked at me.

“He knows we're at the estate.”

My heart sank.

“How?”

Rachel said, “He has someone watching the property.”

The call ended.

Diane immediately contacted the appropriate authorities regarding the property and potential surveillance.

I felt exposed.

For the first time since the party, I realized Michael might not simply be desperate.

He might be willing to protect the plan.

That afternoon, my attorney advised me not to return home alone.

I agreed.

The children stayed with my parents.

I remained at a hotel.

Tom stayed nearby.

That evening, Michael sent me a message.

“We need to talk.”

I didn't respond.

Another message came.

“You're making this worse.”

I showed Diane.

She advised me not to engage.

A third message arrived.

“You don't know what you've uncovered.”

I stared at it.

Then another.

“Please listen to me.”

I put the phone face down.

For the first time, I didn't feel the urge to understand him.

I wanted the evidence.

The next morning, the bank identified the second account.

It belonged to a private holding company.

The company was registered to a person whose name I recognized.

Michael's brother.

I called Diane immediately.

She already knew.

“The company has been dormant for years,” she said. “It became active shortly before the first transfer.”

“Can they hide the money there?”

“They can try.”

“What happens now?”

“We follow it.”

The investigation moved quickly.

The holding company had received money from Michael's account.

That money had then been transferred to another institution.

And from there, part of it had been used to purchase assets.

The trail wasn't disappearing.

It was expanding.

That afternoon, Tom came to the hotel.

He brought a folder.

“Rachel gave me this.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“She says she wants to cooperate.”

Inside the folder were copies of messages between Rachel and Michael.

Some were harmless.

Others were not.

One message from Michael said:

“Once the account is clear, Sadie won't be able to stop us.”

Another said:

“Tom will have no idea what happened until we're gone.”

Rachel had responded:

“Promise me you won't leave me with nothing.”

Michael wrote:

“You'll have everything.”

I closed the folder.

“That was enough for her.”

Tom nodded.

“She believed him.”

“She wanted to.”

He looked at me.

“Does that make you feel better?”

“No.”

“It shouldn't.”

I thought about that.

“No,” I said. “It doesn't.”

That evening, Rachel asked to meet again.

This time I agreed.

We met in a small café away from our neighborhood.

She arrived early.

She looked exhausted.

“You actually came.”

“I want the truth.”

Rachel nodded.

“I'll tell you.”

She wrapped both hands around her coffee.

“Michael told me he had a plan before the anniversary.”

“What plan?”

“To leave.”

“With you?”

“Yes.”

“When did you agree?”

“Months ago.”

I stared at her.

“Why did you kiss him?”

She looked embarrassed.

“I wanted to see if you knew.”

“You were testing me.”

“Yes.”

“And when I called it a joke?”

“You made me think we'd gotten away with it.”

She lowered her eyes.

“That was the moment I knew we had to move faster.”

I felt a deep sadness then.

Not for Rachel.

For the sister I had once believed existed.

“What happened afterward?”

“Tom became suspicious.”

“Because of the photographs?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Because he already knew about the estate.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Tom had been investigating Michael.”

“Why?”

Rachel shook her head.

“I don't know.”

That surprised me.

“Tom suspected something before the party?”

“Yes.”

I thought back to the photographs.

Tom's calmness.

His certainty.

His prepared envelope.

He hadn't been improvising.

He had been waiting.

“Why didn't he confront you?”

Rachel gave a bitter smile.

“Because Tom wanted proof.”

I understood.

He had done exactly what I had done.

Waited.

Watched.

Collected evidence.

Rachel looked at me.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“Michael wasn't the one who found the estate.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Then who did?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Tom.”

I stared at her.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“He showed Michael the property months ago.”

The room seemed to go quiet.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Rachel looked down.

“But Michael told me Tom had introduced him to the seller.”

I sat back.

That meant Tom had known about the estate before Rachel did.

Before Michael planned to use it.

I suddenly remembered his first reaction when he produced the photographs.

He had looked calm.

Too calm.

I thought about his warning.

His separate account.

His legal preparation.

And now this.

I stood.

“I need to talk to Tom.”

Rachel grabbed my wrist.

“Sadie, wait.”

I looked at her hand.

She released me.

“What?”

“Don't tell him I told you.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't know whose side he's on anymore.”

I left the café with one question burning through my mind.

If Tom had helped Michael find the estate, why had he spent months gathering evidence against him?

And if he had known about the property from the beginning, what else had he been hiding?
