PART 11 – The Wedding Photos Vanished From the Internet, but the Truth Spread Faster Than Daniel Could Ever Control

Three days later, the story had changed completely.

The photographs from Daniel's wedding disappeared from several websites.

The articles praising his new beginning were replaced by reports about financial investigations.

Pierce Dynamics released a statement.

Daniel resigned as chief executive.

An independent board would oversee the company while investigators reviewed its financial history.

Vanessa did not return to the mansion.

She stayed with an attorney.

Evelyn agreed to testify.

Richard gave investigators access to the old records.

And Victor Hale disappeared again.

But this time, he was being actively pursued.

I stayed out of the headlines.

That was deliberate.

I had no interest in becoming famous for surviving a bad marriage.

My companies continued operating.

Employees still needed salaries.

Contracts still needed signatures.

Factories still needed supplies.

The world did not stop because Daniel had finally discovered who I was.

In fact, most of my work continued exactly as it had before.

Only one thing had changed.

I no longer needed to hide.

The first board meeting after the investigation lasted six hours.

We reviewed every company.

Every account.

Every legal structure.

The fourteen businesses remained stable.

Some had been affected by the old network.

None had been compromised.

That was my father's greatest success.

He had built them to survive people.

I thought about that often.

People could lie.

People could betray.

People could disappear.

A properly structured company could still function.

Two weeks later, Miriam came into my office carrying a newspaper.

“You're mentioned.”

“I don't want it.”

“You're already mentioned.”

I took the paper.

The headline described the investigation.

It also included a paragraph about the woman behind the fourteen companies.

There was one photograph.

It had been taken outside the courthouse.

I was walking away.

No expression.

No drama.

Just leaving.

I folded the paper.

“That's enough.”

Miriam smiled.

“You're becoming famous.”

“I'd rather become boring.”

“That may be impossible now.”

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Hello.”

“I've signed everything.”

“Good.”

“The board.”

“Yes.”

“The settlement.”

“Yes.”

“And the transfer of my father's trust.”

I paused.

“You don't have to give me anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you?”

“Because it was yours.”

I closed my eyes.

“What are you going to do?”

“I don't know.”

“That might be the first honest answer you've given me.”

He laughed quietly.

“I deserved that.”

There was silence.

Then he said, “Vanessa wants to talk to you.”

“No.”

“She says she has something.”

“What?”

“She won't tell me.”

I hesitated.

“Where is she?”

“Her attorney's office.”

I agreed to meet her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because there was still one unresolved question.

The final account.

Victor's money.

And the missing page.

Vanessa sat across from me.

She looked tired.

The confidence was gone.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don't.”

She looked surprised.

“I don't have enough energy to hate you.”

“That might be worse.”

“Probably.”

She placed an envelope on the table.

“This is everything I kept.”

I opened it.

Inside were copies of messages between her and Victor.

There were dates.

Instructions.

Payments.

Threats.

Then I saw something unexpected.

A message from Victor to Vanessa.

Do not let Claire discover the final account. Daniel must believe it belongs to her.

I looked up.

“He planned the entire accusation.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if Daniel believed you had stolen the money, he would sign anything to get rid of you.”

I stared at the message.

That was exactly what happened.

Vanessa looked down.

“I am sorry.”

I believed she meant it.

That didn't change what she had done.

“Where is Victor?”

“I don't know.”

“Do you know where he keeps the remaining money?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

I closed the envelope.

Then she said something that made me stop.

“There is one place he never searched.”

“Where?”

“Your father's old office.”

I frowned.

“He searched the lake house.”

“Yes.”

“The study?”

“Yes.”

“Then why not the office?”

“Because he believed your father destroyed everything there.”

I stood.

“Thank you.”

She looked at me.

“That's all?”

“What do you want?”

“I don't know.”

“Then don't ask.”

I left.

The old office was in a building I hadn't visited since childhood.

Dust covered the windows.

The furniture remained exactly where I remembered it.

I walked toward my father's desk.

Miriam followed.

“Where do we start?”

I touched the wood.

“Here.”

There was a small scratch beneath the drawer.

I pressed it.

The bottom panel lifted.

Inside was a second key.

And a note.

I unfolded it.

If Victor ever finds the ledger, he will look for the account. He will not look for the person.

Miriam read over my shoulder.

“What's the person?”

I looked at the key.

“Maybe it's not an account.”

The key opened a safety box at a private bank.

Inside was no money.

There was only a single file.

The file contained a list of every person Victor had recruited.

At the bottom was one final name.

Richard Sloan.

I stared at it.

Miriam frowned.

“Richard?”

“He worked for Victor.”

“Apparently.”

“But he helped us.”

“Maybe because he changed sides.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“What?”

“The dates.”

Richard had supposedly stopped working for Victor years earlier.

But the file showed payments continuing.

I called him.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then a message arrived.

From Richard.

Don't trust me.

I showed Miriam.

Her face hardened.

“He knew.”

“Maybe.”

A second message arrived.

I am sorry.

Then nothing.

I looked at the file again.

Richard hadn't simply been a witness.

He had been inside the network.

And if the file was accurate, he had remained connected long after claiming he had left.

The last piece of the puzzle had just moved.
