PART 10 – The Final Box Beneath the Land Held Proof of the Crash, but It Also Revealed Why Daniel Had Been Protected From the Truth

We reached the property shortly after midnight.

The gate was open again.

No lights.

No vehicles.

Nothing moved beyond the trees.

Daniel parked without turning off the engine.

Samuel checked the road behind us.

“There's nobody there.”

“That doesn't mean anything,” he said.

I looked at the old foundation.

The hidden room was somewhere beneath it.

“If Mercer is coming, we don't have much time.”

We went inside.

The brass key opened a second lock we had missed earlier.

Behind the shelves was a narrow steel cabinet.

Samuel stared at it.

“I didn't know that was there.”

My hands were shaking.

The key turned.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a small digital recorder, several memory cards, and a sealed envelope.

My father's name was written across the envelope.

I opened it.

A note fell out.

*For my daughter. Do not trust anyone who tells you the account was created for money. It was created to move the truth.**

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“The account wasn't about hiding money.”

“No.”

“It was about preserving evidence.”

He nodded.

Samuel picked up the recorder.

“There's more.”

We played the first file.

Static.

Then voices.

My father's voice.

Victor's.

And a third voice.

Mercer's.

The recording was from the night of the crash.

My father's voice was clear.

“You've taken enough.”

Mercer answered.

“You don't understand the scale of this.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Victor sounded frightened.

“Elias, stop.”

“It's too late for that.”

I looked at Daniel.

The recording continued.

Mercer threatened my father.

He threatened Victor.

Then my father said something that made me freeze.

“If you touch my daughter, I will release everything.”

Mercer laughed.

“That is precisely why she will be useful.”

The recording ended.

I felt sick.

Daniel took the recorder.

“There's another file.”

He pressed play.

This one began with Victor's voice.

“Daniel doesn't know.”

Mercer replied.

“He doesn't need to.”

“What happens if he finds out?”

“He becomes a liability.”

Victor sounded exhausted.

“Leave my son out of this.”

“He's already in it.”

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone white.

The next voice was Claire.

She was younger.

Terrified.

“I don't want to do this.”

Mercer answered.

“You want your brother alive.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“What was she being forced to do?”

Samuel stopped the recording.

“Probably whatever Mercer needed.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My sister wouldn't.”

“She was protecting you.”

The truth hurt him.

I could see it.

“She was trying to save me.”

“And your father was trying to save everyone,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“I should have known.”

“You were deliberately kept ignorant.”

“That doesn't excuse me.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

A noise came from outside.

We all froze.

A car door slammed.

Then footsteps.

Samuel switched off the recorder.

“Back room.”

We moved quickly.

The footsteps entered the building.

A flashlight swept across the floor.

Then a voice.

“Come out.”

Mercer.

I knew his voice immediately from the recording.

Daniel stepped forward.

Samuel caught his arm.

“Wait.”

Mercer walked deeper inside.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

I looked at the recorder.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

I held it tightly.

Then I noticed something inside the cabinet.

A final memory card.

I slipped it into my pocket.

Mercer reached the hidden room.

He stopped.

“Daniel.”

No response.

“You were always your father's favorite mistake.”

Daniel stepped into view.

Mercer smiled.

“That sounds cruel.”

“You killed my father.”

“No.”

“You were there.”

“I was.”

“You caused the crash.”

Mercer tilted his head.

“Your father made choices.”

I stepped out.

“You're lying.”

Mercer looked at me.

For the first time, I saw recognition.

“You have your father's eyes.”

“You killed him.”

“I didn't intend for him to die.”

“But you knew it would happen.”

He said nothing.

That silence was enough.

I took out my phone.

“I recorded everything.”

Mercer smiled.

“You think anyone will believe you?”

Samuel stepped beside me.

“I will.”

Mercer's expression changed.

“And I have copies.”

He looked toward the door.

“You don't understand.”

“No,” I said. “You don't.”

I held up the memory card.

“This contains the original land records.”

Mercer froze.

“What else?”

“Payment records.”

His face hardened.

“And the crash.”

He stared at me.

“You don't have the crash.”

I smiled for the first time that night.

“We do.”

He looked at Daniel.

Then Samuel.

Then me.

His confidence disappeared.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

The door behind him suddenly opened.

Police officers entered.

Mercer turned.

Daniel had called them before we entered the property.

For once, someone had planned ahead.

Mercer was arrested without another word.

But the night wasn't over.

Because the final recording on the memory card contained one voice I hadn't expected.

My father's.

And it explained why he had trusted Daniel until the very end.
