PART 11 – Daniel’s Name Was on the Final DNA Report, and the Truth About Lily’s Birth Explained Why He Had Chosen Me Before He Ever Asked

I couldn't move.

Daniel.

Lily's father.

Not just the man who had raised her.

Her biological father.

I looked at Samuel.

“That can't be right.”

“It was confirmed.”

“When?”

“Before Daniel died.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He intended to.”

“Then why didn't he?”

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“Because he discovered something else.”

“What?”

“Emma wasn't Lily's biological mother.”

I felt the room tilt.

“Then who was?”

Samuel's answer came quietly.

“Your daughter.”

I stared at him.

He immediately shook his head.

“No. Not Josie.”

My breath caught.

“Then who?”

“Emma carried the pregnancy.”

“Then she was the mother.”

“Biologically, yes.”

I frowned.

“Then what do you mean?”

“She wasn't the woman who gave birth to Lily.”

I couldn't understand.

Samuel opened the final document.

The records had been altered.

The original hospital birth record named another woman.

A woman I knew.

My husband's sister.

My hand covered my mouth.

“This doesn't make sense.”

“It didn't to Daniel.”

“Who was Lily's biological mother?”

Samuel looked at me.

“Her mother was the woman who died in the accident with your husband.”

I froze.

“Josie?”

“No.”

He paused.

“Your husband had a daughter before Josie.”

I stared at him.

The world seemed to stop.

“That's impossible.”

“Daniel believed the same thing.”

“Who was she?”

Samuel slid the document across the desk.

The name belonged to a woman I had never heard of.

But the date of birth was unmistakable.

She had been born before Josie.

She had been adopted as an infant.

And the adoption records were sealed.

“Why would Daniel hide this?”

“Because Lily wasn't the child he originally believed she was.”

I couldn't follow the shifting pieces anymore.

“Start over.”

Samuel nodded.

“Daniel discovered that Emma had been working with your husband.”

“On the company?”

“Yes.”

“They had an affair?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“They were trying to protect a child.”

“Whose child?”

“Daniel's.”

I stared.

“My husband was helping Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was dying.”

I shook my head.

“Daniel wasn't sick when Lily was born.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Daniel knew Emma couldn't keep Lily safe.”

I looked at the photograph.

Emma had looked terrified.

Samuel continued.

“Daniel had been involved with Emma before she married Marcus.”

I closed my eyes.

“So Lily was Daniel's daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my husband's name appear in the records?”

“To hide Daniel's identity.”

“Why?”

“Marcus was searching for Daniel.”

“Because of the company?”

“Because Daniel knew about the financial scheme.”

The pieces began fitting.

Daniel and Emma had a child.

Marcus believed Lily belonged to him.

My husband helped hide the truth.

Then the accident happened.

But where did Josie fit?

I asked.

Samuel became silent.

“Where does my daughter fit?”

He took a long breath.

“She doesn't.”

“What?”

“Daniel saw you grieving beside your daughter's body.”

I stared at him.

“He carried Mr. Bunny away.”

“Yes.”

“He knew me.”

“Yes.”

“But Lily wasn't connected to Josie.”

“No.”

“Then why did he choose me?”

Samuel looked at me.

“Because he had watched you love your daughter.”

My eyes filled.

“He believed you would love Lily the same way.”

That answer hurt more than any complicated secret.

Daniel hadn't chosen me because of blood.

He had chosen me because of what he had seen.

A mother grieving a child.

A child who needed a mother.

But there was still one question.

“Why did Emma come back?”

Samuel's expression changed.

“She wanted Lily.”

“Then why didn't she take her?”

“Because she was dying.”

I looked at him.

“She was sick?”

“Yes.”

“Like Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

I thought of the photograph.

Emma had looked frightened.

Not dangerous.

Not threatening.

Desperate.

“She came back for her daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel refused?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Daniel let her see Lily.”

I stared.

“When?”

“Three months before he proposed to you.”

The photograph.

The date.

“She saw Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't Lily remember?”

“She was told the woman was an old friend.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had arranged everything.

He had given Emma one final meeting.

Then he had asked me to become Lily's permanent family.

I understood the line now.

“She came back for her daughter.”

Emma had come back because she knew she was dying.

Daniel had come back to me because he knew he was dying.

Two dying parents trying to decide what would happen to one child.

And I had unknowingly stepped into the middle.

I asked Samuel one final question.

“Where is Emma?”

He looked toward the door.

“She came to my office yesterday.”

My heart stopped.

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don't know.”

He handed me a note.

“She left this for you.”

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was delicate.

“I know what Daniel asked you to do. I know what he asked you to believe. But there is one thing he never told you.”

I read the next line.

“Lily knows who I am.”

I stopped.

Then I read the final sentence.

“She has known since the day Daniel died.”

I looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I returned home.

Lily was waiting at the kitchen table.

She looked at my face.

“You found her.”

I stopped.

“What did you say?”

“Emma.”

I sat down.

“You know who she is.”

Lily nodded.

“Dad told me.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he said you would be scared.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you see her?”

Lily nodded.

“When?”

“Before Dad died.”

My chest tightened.

“You saw your mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she was sorry.”

I could barely speak.

“Why?”

“Because she left.”

“Why did she leave?”

“She said she was trying to keep me alive.”

I looked at Lily.

She had tears in her eyes.

“Dad said I had to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Whether I wanted her to be my mother.”

My throat tightened.

“What did you choose?”

Lily looked at me.

“You.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

“Because she was my mother.”

She wiped her eyes.

“But you were my home.”

I pulled her into my arms.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily whispered, “Dad knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That you would ask me.”

I held her tighter.

“What else did he know?”

She reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“He told me to give you this if you ever found out about Emma.”

I opened it.

Daniel had written only one paragraph.

“I chose you because Lily needed a mother who would love her without asking where she came from. You lost Josie, and I knew you understood the terror of losing someone you cannot replace. I never wanted Lily to replace your daughter. I wanted you to give her the kind of love you had already given once.”

I couldn't see through my tears.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

“If Emma ever comes back, don't keep Lily from her. Let Lily decide.”

I folded the letter.

Daniel had trusted me with one final decision.

Not to control Lily.

To let her choose.

And suddenly I understood why he had waited a year before giving me the box.

He hadn't wanted the truth to dictate our family.

He wanted us to become one first.

Then he wanted me to decide what to do with the truth.

I looked at Lily.

“Do you want to find Emma?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then we'll find her.”

Lily took my hand.

But before we could stand, someone knocked on the door.

We both froze.

Three slow knocks.

Exactly like before.

Then a woman's voice came through the door.

“It's Emma.”
