The passengers began leaving the aircraft in a slow procession.
Ryan waited near the forward exit.
Valerie remained beside the door, thanking each traveler as they passed.
“Thank you.”
“Have a wonderful afternoon.”
“Enjoy Cancun.”
Ryan stood only a few feet away.
He looked exhausted.
“Valerie.”
She did not answer.
He stepped closer.
“Please.”
She turned toward him.
“You told me you were flying to Austin.”
“I know.”
“You told me you were working.”
“I was trying to—”
“No.”
The word stopped him.
“You had hours to prepare an explanation. Don't waste one on something you haven't thought through.”
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Ashley and I have been seeing each other.”
“I know.”
“I never intended for you to find out like this.”
Valerie almost smiled.
“How exactly did you intend for me to find out?”
He said nothing.
That silence was an answer.
Ashley finally stepped off the aircraft.
She stopped beside Valerie.
Ryan looked at her.
“You promised me you would wait.”
Ashley shook her head.
“You promised me a lot of things.”
Ryan's face hardened.
“Not here.”
Ashley looked at Valerie.
“I need to tell you everything.”
Valerie glanced toward the terminal.
“Then we find somewhere private.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“I'll come with you.”
“No.”
His eyes narrowed.
“This concerns me.”
“It concerns my marriage.”
“You're making this worse.”
Valerie looked at him.
“You already did that.”
She walked away with Ashley.
They found a quiet seating area near the far end of the terminal.
Ashley sat down but kept both hands wrapped around her handbag.
“I should have told you months ago.”
“About the affair?”
Ashley nodded.
“And about the money.”
Valerie's attention sharpened.
“What money?”
Ashley opened her bag.
She removed a white envelope.
Ryan's handwriting was visible across the front.
Valerie stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
“He gave it to me last night.”
“Why?”
“He said you had already signed everything.”
Valerie took the envelope.
“What everything?”
Ashley shook her head.
“I don't know. That's what scared me.”
Valerie opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a document.
Her name appeared near the bottom.
Her signature appeared beneath it.
Valerie's stomach tightened.
She knew immediately that she had never signed it.
The document concerned a transfer of funds connected to one of Ryan's companies.
The amount was $240,000.
She read the figure twice.
Ashley watched her.
“He told me it was part of the divorce settlement.”
Valerie looked up.
“What did he tell you about me?”
“That you had agreed to leave the business interests alone.”
“I never agreed to anything.”
Ashley swallowed.
“He told me you were unstable. That you were angry about the divorce. That you might accuse him of stealing from you.”
Valerie stared at the document.
Then she noticed something else.
A date.
Six months earlier.
That was before she had ever discussed divorce.
Before she had even suspected Ashley existed.
She turned the page.
There was a second document.
A corporate authorization.
Her name again.
Her signature again.
The same amount.
Different account.
Valerie felt the room become unnaturally quiet.
“This isn't just about your affair.”
Ashley shook her head.
“No.”
“What is it?”
“I don't know.”
“Then tell me what you do know.”
Ashley took a breath.
“Ryan told me he was going to divorce you, move money into another company, and start over with me.”
Valerie looked down at the paperwork.
“Which company?”
“Carter Development Holdings.”
Valerie knew the name.
Ryan had created it three years earlier.
He had described it as a small investment entity for future projects.
Valerie had never been involved in its operations.
Ashley continued.
“He said you owned part of it.”
“I don't.”
“He told me you did.”
“I don't.”
Ashley leaned forward.
“There was another thing.”
Valerie waited.
“He wanted me to sign something.”
“What?”
“A loan guarantee.”
Valerie looked at her sharply.
“For how much?”
“Two hundred forty thousand.”
The amount on the paper.
Valerie's fingers tightened.
“Did you sign?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because the account information didn't match what he told me.”
Valerie looked at the document again.
That explained the fear in Ashley's voice.
Ryan had not simply been cheating.
He had been constructing a financial story in which both women could be made responsible for money they had never borrowed.
Valerie stood.
“We're going to the authorities.”
Ashley looked frightened.
“Will they believe me?”
“They don't need to believe either of us yet.”
Valerie folded the documents carefully.
“They need to see evidence.”
Ryan appeared at the end of the corridor.
Valerie saw him before he saw them.
He stopped.
His expression changed when he noticed the envelope in her hand.
For the first time that day, Valerie saw something close to genuine panic.
He walked toward them.
“Where did you get that?”
Ashley stood.
“You gave it to me.”
“I told you not to open it.”
Valerie's eyes remained on him.
“Why is my signature on these documents?”
Ryan stopped.
“I can explain.”
“You've used that sentence several times today.”
“I didn't forge anything.”
Valerie held up the paper.
“Then tell me when I signed it.”
He looked down.
His silence was immediate.
Valerie understood.
He had no answer.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“Valerie, I was trying to protect our assets.”
“From whom?”
“From the divorce.”
“We weren't getting divorced.”
“You were going to leave me.”
“You don't know that.”
“You were unhappy.”
Valerie's voice became quieter.
“That isn't permission to manufacture documents.”
Ryan looked around.
“Let's go somewhere private.”
“No.”
“People are staring.”
“Let them.”
He lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what this could do.”
Valerie looked directly at him.
“That's the first honest thing you've said.”
A man in a dark suit approached.
He had been watching from several seats away.
“Mrs. Carter?”
Valerie turned.
“Yes?”
“My name is Daniel Mercer. I'm with airport security.”
He glanced at the documents.
“We received a report concerning possible financial fraud connected to one of the passengers.”
Ryan's face changed.
“That's absurd.”
Daniel looked at Valerie.
“Are these documents yours?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize the transfers?”
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then I recommend you do not leave the terminal with him.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You don't understand our situation.”
Daniel remained calm.
“Then you can explain it when the investigators arrive.”
Ryan looked at Valerie.
His expression was no longer pleading.
It was angry.
“You're doing this to me?”
Valerie held his gaze.
“No.”
She placed the documents inside her handbag.
“You did this to yourself.”
Ryan's phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
For one second, Valerie saw the name.
Michael.
Ryan declined the call.
The phone rang again.
He declined it again.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is Michael?”
Ryan said nothing.
Valerie remembered the company documents.
Carter Development Holdings.
The signature.
The $240,000.
The fabricated divorce.
And now Michael.
She looked at Ryan.
“Who is he?”
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“No one.”
The phone rang a third time.
This time Ryan answered.
“Hello?”
He listened.
His expression slowly changed.
“What do you mean the account is frozen?”
Valerie watched him.
Ryan turned away.
The lie had finally reached a point where even he could no longer control every piece of it.
