PART 8 – David Vanished Before the Evidence Could Reach the Authorities, and His Final Message Revealed a Secret About the Children He Had Hidden for Years

We spent the night preparing evidence.

Jessica sent the bank records to investigators.

The forged property document was secured.

The corporate records from Oak Creek were copied and preserved.

The small donations made under my name were documented.

Everything that could be verified was being verified.

For the first time since Christmas Eve, I believed the truth was moving faster than David.

Then he disappeared.

His phone was turned off.

His car was found abandoned near a train station.

His laptop was still missing.

No one knew where he was.

At seven the next morning, Sarah called me.

"Claire."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"What happened?"

"Ethan isn't here."

I stood immediately.

"What do you mean?"

"He went to school yesterday afternoon. He never came home."

My blood ran cold.

"Did you call him?"

"His phone is off."

"Where's Chloe?"

"With me."

"Have you called the police?"

"Yes."

Jessica was already reaching for her coat.

We drove to the house.

Officers were already there.

Sarah looked as though she hadn't slept.

Chloe sat on the stairs with her arms wrapped around herself.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Claire."

I hugged her.

"Where did Ethan go?"

"I don't know."

"Did he say anything before he left?"

She shook her head.

Then she stopped.

"Wait."

"What?"

"He was angry."

"About what?"

"Dad."

"What did he say?"

"He said he was going to find out what Dad was hiding."

My stomach tightened.

"Did he take anything?"

Chloe thought.

"His backpack."

"Anything else?"

"His father's old watch."

I looked at Sarah.

"Why would he take that?"

"I don't know."

An officer approached.

"We found a message on Ethan's phone."

"Where?"

"It was sent shortly before the phone was switched off."

He showed me the screen.

I read it.

I'm going to the place Dad told me never to go.

The message had been sent to Chloe.

"Do you know what place he means?"

Chloe nodded slowly.

"Grandfather's cabin."

I looked at Sarah.

"Your father owned a cabin?"

"No."

I turned back to Chloe.

"My father did."

I felt a strange sense of dread.

The cabin had been sold after my father's death.

Or at least I had thought it had.

I called the number listed in the old property records.

A man answered.

"Hello?"

I gave him my name.

There was a pause.

Then he said, "I've been expecting you."

My stomach dropped.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

The name was familiar.

I searched my memory.

Then I remembered a letter in my father's papers.

Daniel had been my father's attorney.

"You handled my father's estate."

"Yes."

"Did you know David?"

"Unfortunately."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Where is my son?"

"I don't know."

"Ethan isn't my biological son."

I corrected myself immediately.

"My stepson."

Daniel was silent.

"Does Ethan have access to the cabin?"

"Not the old cabin."

"What do you mean?"

"The property was never sold."

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"What?"

"Your father transferred it into a separate holding trust."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because the instructions were sealed."

"Why?"

"Because he specifically said the information should only be released if you were facing an attempt to take control of the main property."

I looked at Jessica.

The same phrase again.

My father's trust.

The house.

The hidden documents.

There had been another layer.

"Where is the cabin?"

Daniel gave me an address.

It was three hours away.

"We're going," I said.

Jessica stopped me.

"We need the police."

"I know."

"I mean we need them with us."

I nodded.

An officer arranged an escort.

We drove through the morning rain.

For most of the journey, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah asked me something.

"Why would your father leave a cabin hidden?"

"I don't know."

Jessica answered instead.

"Maybe because he knew someone might eventually try to take the house."

Sarah looked at me.

"Did your father know David?"

"Yes."

"Did he trust him?"

I thought about my father's old letter.

Love should never require you to surrender your judgment.

"I don't think he did."

When we arrived, the cabin looked abandoned.

Snow had gathered along the roof.

The windows were dark.

The front door was unlocked.

"Ethan!"

Sarah ran inside.

I followed.

The cabin smelled of dust and cedar.

A chair had been overturned near the fireplace.

There was a backpack on the floor.

"Ethan!"

No answer.

Then we heard movement upstairs.

An officer went first.

Ethan stepped into the hallway.

He looked exhausted.

Sarah ran to him.

"What happened?"

"I found something."

He looked at me.

"Dad came here."

"When?"

"Last night."

My heart stopped.

"Where is he?"

"He left before I woke up."

"Did he hurt you?"

"No."

"Then what did you find?"

Ethan led us downstairs.

Behind the fireplace was a metal box.

Inside were documents.

My father's handwriting appeared on the first page.

The letter was addressed to me.

I read it with shaking hands.

Claire,

If David has reached this point, then he has likely attempted to use your marriage against you.

I couldn't continue.

I looked at Ethan.

"You read this?"

"Yes."

"What did it say?"

He looked ashamed.

"That Dad had been asking your father for money years ago."

Jessica stepped forward.

"What?"

Ethan handed her another document.

A loan agreement.

David's name.

My father's name.

The amount was enormous.

David had borrowed money from my father before we were married.

And according to the agreement, he had never repaid it.

My father had not pursued him.

Instead, he had protected me.

The house.

The cabin.

The trust.

They were not random acts of caution.

They were safeguards.

David had been financially unstable long before I knew him.

And my father had known.

I felt betrayed all over again.

Not because my father had hidden something.

Because David had hidden it.

Then Ethan said something that made the room go silent.

"Dad told me he didn't marry you for love."

Sarah covered her mouth.

I stared at Ethan.

"What did he say?"

"He said your father had money, and you had the house."

The words seemed to drain all the warmth from the room.

"Did he say when he decided that?"

Ethan shook his head.

"He said he thought he could fix everything after he married you."

Jessica looked at the documents.

"That explains the original debt."

But it didn't explain everything.

I looked at the final page.

There was another name.

Marcus Bell.

And beside it, a note written in my father's handwriting.

If David ever attempts to recover this debt through Claire's property, contact Marcus.

I looked at Jessica.

"Marcus knew."

"Apparently."

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then David's voice came through.

"You found the cabin."

I froze.

"Where are you?"

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"You have no idea what your father did."

I looked at the documents.

"I know what you did."

He laughed quietly.

"You think this is about the house."

"It is."

"No."

His voice changed.

"This is about what happens when the truth comes out."

"What truth?"

He was silent.

Then he said:

"Ask Sarah who Ethan's biological father really is."

The call ended.

I looked at Sarah.

Her face had gone completely white.

Ethan stared at her.

Chloe whispered my name.

And in that instant, I understood that the financial scheme, the forged documents, and the house might not be the deepest secret David had been hiding.

There was something about Ethan's birth that Sarah had never told us.

And David had just used it as his final weapon.
