My 8-Month-Old Triplets Screamed in Their Nursery Every Night—Then a Housekeeper’s 4-Year-Old Daughter Revealed What Was Hidden Inside the Wall

A Different Kind of Protection
Shortly after two in the morning, an acoustical engineer named Thomas Keene arrived at the house.
Thomas was in his late fifties, soft-spoken and careful, the sort of man who apologized when the corner of his equipment case brushed against a doorframe.
He removed the device, examined its housing, tested the wiring, and finally pushed his glasses higher on his nose.
“This isn’t a monitoring device.”
I had been standing with my arms crossed.
“Then what is it?”
“An ultrasonic pest-control unit.”
I stared at him.
“Inside a nursery?”
“It probably wasn’t installed for a nursery.”
He explained that certain commercial deterrent systems emitted sound at frequencies intended to discourage rodents from entering particular areas.
Depending on the model, those frequencies could cycle or pulse.
Most adults might notice nothing at all.
Aaron stepped closer.
“But babies?”
Thomas nodded.
“Could certainly react. And a four-year-old with sensitive hearing might notice it much more clearly than we do.”
The eastern section of the house had been renovated about a year earlier, shortly before the triplets arrived.
Before becoming a nursery, the room had been a sitting room.
Long before I bought the property, that side of the floor had been divided into smaller staff quarters.
“Could it have been there for decades?” I asked.
Thomas shook his head.
“Not this model. A few years, maybe.”
That made the situation more confusing, not less.
If the device had been installed recently enough, someone should have documented it.
If it had been present during the renovation, someone should have removed it.
And if someone had installed it afterward, we needed to know why.
I slept less than an hour.
At dawn, I found Claire in the breakfast room making coffee for everyone, although no one had asked her to.
That was typical of Claire.
She noticed empty cups, tired faces, missing buttons, schedule changes, forgotten school forms, and birthdays that other people nearly missed.
She seemed to carry an invisible inventory of the entire household in her head.
When I entered, she stood.
“Mr. Whitaker, I’m sorry about Maisie last night.”
“For finding the problem?”
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“She was supposed to stay downstairs.”
“If she had, we might still have three miserable babies and six adults staring at each other.”
