PART 3 – Daniel Came Home Expecting His Wife to Apologize, but the Documents on the Dining Table Changed Who Was Asking for Answers

Daniel followed me into the dining room.

Mara remained near the foyer.

David closed the front door behind him.

Vanessa stayed upstairs with the baby.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.”

I remained standing.

“You don't give me orders anymore.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“What happened to you?”

“Nothing.”

“You're acting completely differently.”

“No.”

I placed the black folder on the dining table.

“I simply stopped pretending.”

He stared at it.

“You've been investigating me.”

“I've been protecting myself.”

“You don't trust me.”

“I shouldn't.”

His jaw tightened.

“Because of some photographs?”

“No.”

I opened the folder.

“Because of the money.”

He went still.

“What money?”

“The money you moved.”

“I haven't moved anything.”

I pushed the first statement toward him.

He looked at it.

Then at me.

“This is a joint account.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“So why are there payments to an account I don't recognize?”

“Business expenses.”

I placed another page in front of him.

“Why does a business expense pay Vanessa’s credit card?”

He didn't answer.

“Why did our account pay the deposit on a furnished apartment?”

Silence.

“Why did you pay a jeweler?”

“That was a gift.”

“For whom?”

He looked away.

I didn't need the answer.

Mara entered the room.

“Mr. Vance, my client is not asking you to explain every expense today.”

Daniel laughed.

“Your client?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“You hired a lawyer against me?”

“I hired a lawyer to protect my interests.”

“We're married.”

“That hasn't stopped you from making decisions without me.”

He stood abruptly.

“This is absurd.”

Mara's voice remained calm.

“Then you should have no difficulty providing the requested records.”

“What records?”

“The complete financial history of the joint accounts, transfers involving Ms. Cole, and any communications concerning the property.”

Daniel's face changed when she mentioned communications.

I noticed.

So did Mara.

“Why do you need my messages?”

“Because your written communications may establish the purpose of the transfers.”

“You're overstepping.”

“No.”

She closed the folder.

“We're beginning.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You're trying to destroy me.”

I shook my head.

“You did that yourself.”

He stepped closer.

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“I understand more than you think.”

His voice dropped.

“Vanessa needs help.”

“Then help her.”

“I am helping her.”

“With my money?”

He looked toward the ceiling.

The baby had begun crying again.

Vanessa's voice drifted faintly down the stairs.

Daniel's expression softened for a second.

Then he turned back to me.

“She has nobody.”

“She has you.”

He stared.

“That should have been your first clue.”

He didn't understand.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the moving van remained in the driveway.

Boxes sat beside the curb.

A crib was waiting upstairs.

A woman who was supposed to stay six months had already begun rearranging my life.

Daniel had expected me to become her caretaker.

Instead, I was becoming the person standing between him and everything he had taken for granted.

Mara approached me quietly.

“There's one more thing.”

I turned.

She handed me a document.

“What's this?”

“The preliminary tracing report.”

I read the first page.

Then the second.

The transfers were larger than I had realized.

Some had passed through intermediary accounts.

Several ended up connected to Vanessa.

I looked at Mara.

“Can we prove he authorized them?”

“We're working on that.”

“Why aren't these under his name?”

“Because someone was trying not to make them obvious.”

My stomach tightened.

“So he planned this.”

“That's what the records may show.”

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing near the dining table, watching us.

“What?”

I didn't answer.

Mara closed her briefcase.

“We'll continue tomorrow.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You're leaving?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Don't sign anything.”

Then she turned to Daniel.

“And don't move anything.”

His expression went cold.

“You're threatening me?”

“No.”

She opened the front door.

“I'm advising you.”

After she left, Daniel stood silently for several seconds.

Then he said, “You really think you can turn this into some legal battle?”

“I don't want a battle.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The truth.”

He laughed.

“You won't like it.”

“I already know enough.”

His face hardened.

“You think Vanessa is the problem.”

“I think you are.”

He stared at me.

Then he said something I had not expected.

“She loves me.”

The words were so quiet that for a moment I thought I had misunderstood.

I looked at him.

“Does she?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you tell her I would take care of her?”

He didn't answer.

“Why didn't you leave me?”

His face tightened.

“Because it wasn't that simple.”

“Nothing is simple when you're lying to two women.”

He looked away.

I watched him walk upstairs.

A few minutes later, I heard Vanessa's bedroom door close.

Then voices.

Low.

Angry.

I couldn't make out every word.

But I heard Vanessa say one sentence clearly.

“You promised me.”

Daniel answered.

“I know.”

I stood at the bottom of the staircase.

The house suddenly felt much larger.

And much less safe.

That night, I didn't sleep.

At 2:14 a.m., I heard footsteps in the hallway.

I opened my bedroom door a few inches.

Daniel stood outside the study.

He looked around.

Then unlocked the desk drawer.

I watched him remove a folder.

He didn't see me.

He carried it downstairs.

I followed silently.

He placed it inside a briefcase near the kitchen.

Then he returned upstairs.

I waited.

When I was certain he was gone, I opened the briefcase.

Inside was a stack of documents.

Business records.

Loan papers.

Copies of our account statements.

And one page with my name typed across the top.

I read it twice.

It wasn't a divorce petition.

It was something much worse.

A financial authorization bearing what appeared to be my signature.

I knew immediately that I had never signed it.

I took a photograph with my phone.

Then I put everything back exactly as I had found it.

At 3:02 a.m., I called Mara.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Claire?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“I think my signature was forged.”

There was silence.

Then Mara's voice became very careful.

“Don't touch anything else.”

“I already photographed it.”

“Good.”

“What does this mean?”

“It means the situation just changed.”

“How?”

“Because now we're not only looking at marital misconduct.”

I sat on the kitchen floor.

“What are we looking at?”

“Potential fraud.”

I closed my eyes.

Upstairs, the floor creaked.

Someone was awake.

And for the first time, I understood that Daniel's plan had never been simply to replace me.

He had been preparing to make sure I couldn't fight back.
