PART 5 – The Second Account Revealed Why Daniel Needed Vanessa Inside the House, and the Answer Was More Dangerous Than the Affair

I stayed beside the kitchen counter long after Mara ended the call.

The house was quiet again.

Too quiet.

Somewhere upstairs, Vanessa was settling the baby. I could hear the faint squeak of the nursery door, then the soft rhythm of footsteps crossing the floor.

Daniel was in the bedroom.

He believed I knew about the affair.

He believed I knew about the money.

He might even have guessed that I was preparing to protect myself.

But he did not know that Mara had found another account.

And he certainly did not know that I had begun to understand the reason behind it.

I went into the study and closed the door.

The desk lamp cast a narrow pool of light across the papers I had collected. I opened my laptop and created a new folder with an ordinary name that would never attract attention.

House Records.

Inside it, I saved every photograph, statement, document, and message I had collected.

Then I created another folder.

Daniel.

I hesitated before saving the forged authorization there.

My hands were steady.

That surprised me.

A month earlier, I would have been shaking.

Now I felt something colder.

Clarity.

The next morning, Daniel left for work at 7:40.

Before he left, he kissed my cheek.

The gesture was so familiar that it almost made me angry.

“Dinner tonight?” he asked.

“If you're home.”

“I will be.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

The front door closed.

I waited until his car disappeared.

Then I called Mara.

“I want to see the information on Vanessa's account.”

“Come to my office.”

I drove there alone.

Mara was waiting with David.

The moment I entered, she pushed a thick folder toward me.

“Everything we've confirmed is in here.”

I opened it.

The first pages contained transfers from Daniel's business account.

The dates went back eleven months.

The amounts varied.

Some were small enough to look ordinary.

Others were large.

Very large.

I traced the dates with my finger.

“This started before Vanessa moved here.”

“Yes.”

“Before she had the baby.”

“Yes.”

“Before Daniel told me she needed help.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Mara.

“So the baby wasn't the reason.”

“No.”

It was a simple answer.

But it changed how I understood everything.

Mara pointed to another page.

“This is the apartment deposit.”

I read the date.

Nearly a year earlier.

“Who paid the deposit?”

“Daniel's business.”

“And who signed the lease?”

“Vanessa.”

I stared at the page.

“She already had somewhere to live.”

“Correct.”

“Then why did she need to move into my house?”

Mara folded her hands.

“That is what we're trying to establish.”

I turned another page.

There was a second transfer.

Then another.

Then another.

Some had descriptions like consulting.

Marketing.

Travel.

Professional services.

But the receiving accounts were personal.

Vanessa's.

A company connected to her.

And one account I didn't recognize.

“What is this?”

David leaned forward.

“That account is the interesting part.”

“Why?”

“We're still tracing it.”

“Whose is it?”

“We don't know yet.”

I looked at Mara.

“You said the second account changed everything.”

“It may.”

“May?”

“We need one more confirmation.”

I closed the folder.

“What confirmation?”

Mara looked directly at me.

“We need to know whether Daniel was moving money because he was preparing to leave you, or because he was trying to hide a larger financial problem.”

I thought about the business records.

The debts.

The loans.

The forged signature.

“Could it be both?”

“Yes.”

That possibility sat heavily in the room.

I left Mara's office just before noon.

On the drive home, I stopped at the bank.

I transferred the money that was unquestionably mine into the protected account Mara had helped me establish.

I didn't empty the joint account.

I didn't want Daniel to know.

I simply made sure that if everything collapsed tomorrow, I would still have the ability to stand on my own.

When I arrived home, Vanessa was sitting on the back patio.

The baby slept beside her.

She looked up.

“You were gone for a while.”

“I had an appointment.”

“With Mara?”

I stopped.

“How do you know her name?”

“Daniel told me.”

I sat across from her.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I shouldn't have asked.”

“You should.”

She stared at the sleeping baby.

“I don't know what I'm supposed to do.”

“That depends on what Daniel told you.”

She was silent.

Then she said, “He told me this house would eventually be ours.”

I didn't react.

“Eventually?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After the divorce.”

My throat tightened.

“Did he tell you when he planned to divorce me?”

She shook her head.

“He kept saying soon.”

“How long has he been saying that?”

“Months.”

I looked at her.

“Eleven?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

She swallowed.

“Almost a year.”

The answer confirmed what Mara's documents had already shown.

I leaned back.

“Did he promise you anything else?”

She hesitated.

“What?”

“A future.”

“Yes.”

“A marriage?”

“Yes.”

“Children?”

She looked at the baby.

“Yes.”

“And my house?”

Her face crumpled.

“I didn't know it wasn't his.”

“You never asked?”

“I believed him.”

I nodded.

That was the part I found hardest to understand.

Not that she had believed Daniel.

But that she had believed him so completely that she never questioned what he was giving her.

Then again, I had done the same thing for eleven years.

Maybe that was why I couldn't hate her as easily as I wanted.

“What did he say about me?”

Vanessa looked embarrassed.

“That you were difficult.”

I almost smiled.

“He used that word often.”

“He said you were obsessed with money.”

I laughed once.

“I never cared about money.”

“He said you would never let him leave.”

I looked at her.

“And now?”

She looked away.

“Now I think he was afraid you would.”

That answer surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because every time I asked when we could be together openly, he said he needed to protect himself first.”

The pieces shifted.

Not enough to form the whole picture.

But enough to reveal the outline.

“What did he mean by protect himself?”

“I don't know.”

She rubbed her forehead.

“He said the house, the accounts, the company… everything was complicated.”

I felt my pulse quicken.

“The company?”

“He talked about it a lot.”

“What did he say?”

“That he was worried you would take half.”

I stared at her.

“I didn't know the company was in trouble.”

“He said it wasn't.”

“But you knew about the debts.”

She looked at me.

“How did you know?”

“Mara found them.”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“I didn't know.”

“You don't have to protect him anymore.”

She looked toward the house.

“I don't know if I ever was.”

The baby stirred.

Vanessa picked her up.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, “Daniel isn't who I thought he was.”

I didn't answer.

Because I wasn't sure who I had thought he was either.

That evening, Daniel came home at 8:05.

He looked tired.

He loosened his tie before walking into the kitchen.

“You're still awake.”

“Yes.”

“Where's Vanessa?”

“Upstairs.”

He poured himself water.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes.”

He studied me.

“You seem different.”

“I am.”

He smiled faintly.

“Still angry?”

“No.”

That seemed to worry him more.

“Then what?”

“I've been thinking.”

“About?”

“Us.”

He leaned against the counter.

“And?”

“I think we should stop pretending.”

His expression hardened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I know you planned a life with Vanessa.”

He said nothing.

“I know about the apartment.”

Still nothing.

“I know about the transfers.”

His face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

Then I added, “And I know about the account you haven't told me about.”

Daniel's eyes locked onto mine.

For the first time in weeks, he looked genuinely frightened.

He recovered quickly.

“What account?”

I smiled.

“That was the wrong question.”

He stared at me.

I walked past him.

“Good night, Daniel.”

He didn't follow.

But I could feel his eyes on my back.

And before I reached the stairs, I heard him take his phone from his pocket.

He was making a call.

I didn't turn around.

I already knew who he was calling.

Vanessa.

And whatever they had planned next, they were no longer planning it against a woman who knew nothing.

They were planning it against me.
