PART 6 – The Evidence Made My Uncle Look Guilty, Until a Witness Revealed a Different Reason He Had Been Hiding the Truth

We left the storage facility carrying only copies of the documents and the cassette.

The manager had allowed us to photograph everything after I explained the circumstances.

I wanted the originals left untouched.

They had survived thirty-five years.

I wasn't going to risk losing them because of my anger.

On the drive home, neither of us spoke.

The cassette sat in the center console.

It felt heavier than it was.

Every few minutes, I looked at it.

The last words kept replaying in my head.

Look at the person who benefits from my silence.

Javier.

The obvious answer.

Perhaps too obvious.

When we reached the house, Leo was awake.

He was lying in the bassinet, waving his tiny arms at the ceiling.

I picked him up.

His body relaxed against me.

I looked at the crescent beneath his ear.

For the first time, the mark no longer frightened me.

It connected me to something.

A family.

A history.

A sister who had trusted me enough to leave the truth behind.

Alex watched from the doorway.

“He likes you.”

“He doesn't know me.”

“Babies don't need much time.”

I looked at him.

“Neither did I.”

He understood what I meant.

I had trusted him for years.

It had taken one afternoon to make that trust feel fragile.

I handed Leo to him.

“I need to call someone.”

“Who?”

“Javier.”

Alex stiffened.

“You're sure?”

“No.”

I dialed.

The call went to voicemail.

I left no message.

Ten minutes later, his number appeared on my screen.

I answered.

“Lucia?”

His voice sounded older than I remembered.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Is something wrong?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“What happened?”

“I found something that belonged to Nicolas.”

The silence was immediate.

It told me more than his words would have.

“What did you find?”

“A storage unit.”

His breathing changed.

“Where?”

“You knew about it.”

“No.”

“Don't lie.”

“I didn't.”

“Then why did you know the name of the facility?”

Another silence.

I realized he had never answered.

“You've been there,” I said.

“No.”

“Javier.”

“I haven't.”

“Then how did you know where it was?”

He didn't respond.

I ended the call.

Alex looked at me.

“He knows.”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Find him.”

We drove to Javier's house.

He wasn't there.

His neighbor said he had left early that morning.

His car was gone.

I stood on the sidewalk staring at the closed garage.

Something felt wrong.

Not because he was avoiding me.

Because he had known exactly what I was asking before I told him.

My phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

“Hello?”

A man's voice answered.

“Are you Lucia Alvarez?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Daniel Mercer.”

“Who are you?”

“I was Nicolas Vidal's attorney.”

I stopped walking.

“How did you get my number?”

“Your uncle contacted me years ago.”

“Javier?”

“Yes.”

“What did he want?”

“He wanted to know whether Nicolas had left any instructions.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I'm not comfortable discussing this by phone.”

“Then meet me.”

There was a pause.

“Tomorrow morning.”

“No.”

“Lucia—”

“Today.”

Another pause.

“Three o'clock.”

“Where?”

“St. Martin's Café.”

I agreed.

When we arrived at the café, Daniel was already there.

He was in his seventies, thin, silver-haired, and wearing a dark suit despite the heat.

He stood when he saw me.

His eyes immediately filled with recognition.

“You look like Elena.”

Everyone said that.

But hearing it from a man who had known Nicolas made it different.

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Daniel looked at Alex.

Then at me.

“I can tell you what I know.”

“That's all I want.”

He sat down.

“Nicolas was planning to challenge the guardianship.”

“I know.”

“He had evidence that Carmen had no legal right to keep you.”

“I know.”

Daniel nodded.

“But he didn't know how far Javier would go.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did Javier do?”

“I don't know.”

“That isn't good enough.”

“No,” Daniel said. “It isn't.”

He removed a folder from his briefcase.

Inside was a police report.

The boating accident.

Nicolas's death.

I scanned the pages.

The official report said he had lost control of the boat.

No witnesses.

No mechanical failure.

No evidence of foul play.

“Then why did my father think someone was following him?”

“Because he told me.”

“When?”

“The afternoon before he died.”

I looked up.

“What did he say?”

“He said Javier had been threatening him.”

“What kind of threats?”

“He said Javier told him that if Nicolas tried to take you, he would make sure Elena never saw you again.”

My stomach turned.

“Did Nicolas believe him?”

“He did.”

“Did you?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I believed Javier was capable of manipulation.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

He opened another folder.

“This is what Nicolas asked me to keep.”

Inside was a letter addressed to me.

My name was written in my father's handwriting.

I touched it.

“Why didn't you give this to me?”

“You were a child.”

“You could have given it to me later.”

“Javier told me you were legally his family.”

“Was that enough?”

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

“I should have found you.”

I unfolded the letter.

Nicolas wrote that he loved me.

That he was sorry.

That he believed Carmen loved me too.

Then he wrote something unexpected.

He didn't blame Carmen.

He blamed fear.

He wrote that Carmen had become convinced Elena would destroy my future.

He wrote that Javier had encouraged that belief.

But the final paragraph was different.

If Javier tells you I died in an accident, ask why he was the last person to speak to me before I left.

I looked up.

“Was he?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why wasn't that in the police report?”

“Because Javier told investigators he spoke to Nicolas two days earlier.”

“Was that true?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at the document.

“What happened after Nicolas died?”

Daniel's face changed.

“Elena disappeared.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“She left the state.”

“Why?”

“Javier told her Nicolas had died because he was trying to take you.”

My hands went cold.

“He blamed my father.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena believed him?”

“She was devastated.”

I looked down.

A familiar pattern.

Someone had controlled the story.

Someone had decided what each person should know.

Someone had kept everyone apart.

“Do you know where Elena went?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

I sat back.

The questions were multiplying.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photograph.

A man standing beside a boat.

Javier.

The image was old.

The date stamp showed the day Nicolas died.

I looked at Alex.

“Who sent this?”

Another message arrived.

Ask him why he lied about being there.

My heart began pounding.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you send this?”

“No.”

Alex took the phone.

The image was clearly Javier.

Standing beside the marina.

A second man was visible behind him.

His face was blurred.

I zoomed in.

There was something familiar about his jacket.

Something I had seen before.

Alex's expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“I've seen that jacket.”

“Where?”

“At Sara's funeral.”

I stared at him.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Who was wearing it?”

He shook his head.

“I don't remember.”

Another message arrived.

You are asking the wrong question.

Then a second one.

Your father wasn't killed because of you.

I read it twice.

A third message appeared.

He was killed because of what he discovered.

I looked at Alex.

“What did he discover?”

Neither of us knew.

But suddenly the entire story had shifted.

Maybe Nicolas hadn't simply been fighting to get me back.

Maybe he had uncovered something else.

Something powerful enough to frighten someone into silence.

And if that was true, Javier might not be the only person who had benefited from Nicolas's death.
