PART 8 – My Husband Finally Told Me Why He Followed My Father, but His Confession Opened a Door to the Secret Sara Had Died Trying to Expose

I couldn't speak.

Dr. Samuel Grant.

The doctor whose name appeared in Nicolas's notebook.

The doctor who had treated Elena.

The doctor standing beside my pregnant mother three days before I was born.

And now the man Alex had seen arguing with Javier on the night Nicolas died.

I looked at my husband.

“You saw them together.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect Sara.”

“She died.”

“I know.”

“Then what exactly did your silence protect?”

Alex looked down.

“Nothing.”

The answer was almost inaudible.

“Nothing,” he repeated.

I sat at the kitchen table.

“Start from the beginning.”

He sat opposite me.

“When Sara contacted me eleven months ago, she didn't just tell me she was my foster sister.”

“What else?”

“She told me she believed your family had been involved in something before you were born.”

“What did she know?”

“She had found Elena's old medical records.”

“The Vidal Study.”

He looked surprised.

“You found that.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“She believed the study had been connected to your birth.”

“How?”

“She found evidence that Elena had been enrolled without fully understanding the consent documents.”

“Was I part of it?”

“She believed you were.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Sara didn't know for certain.”

“So you decided uncertainty meant I shouldn't know.”

“Yes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be everyone's favorite excuse.”

“I know.”

He looked exhausted.

“I was wrong.”

I looked toward the nursery.

Leo was asleep.

“Keep going.”

“Sara asked me to find out what happened to Nicolas.”

“And you did.”

“I tried.”

“You followed him.”

“I followed a lead.”

“What lead?”

“Michael Reed.”

I remembered the name.

“He was working with Sara.”

“Yes.”

“He told her that Nicolas had hired him before his death.”

“What was he investigating?”

“Dr. Grant.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?”

“Because Nicolas believed Grant had falsified Elena's records.”

“Was he right?”

“We don't know everything.”

“But?”

“But he found enough to make someone nervous.”

“Who?”

“Javier.”

I stared at him.

“Javier was involved.”

“I don't know how deeply.”

“Then why did you follow him?”

“Because Sara asked me to find out whether he knew what happened to Nicolas.”

“And the marina?”

“I arrived there late.”

“What did you see?”

“Javier and Grant arguing.”

“What were they saying?”

“I heard Grant say, ‘You promised me this would stay buried.’”

My skin prickled.

“And Javier?”

“He said, ‘You were paid.’”

I leaned forward.

“Paid for what?”

“I don't know.”

“What happened next?”

“Grant left.”

“Javier stayed?”

“Yes.”

“And Nicolas?”

“I never saw him.”

“Then how did you know he was dead?”

“I didn't.”

Alex looked at his hands.

“I found out the next morning.”

“Why didn't you go to the police?”

“Because Sara begged me not to.”

“Why?”

“She believed whoever was involved might come after her.”

I stared at him.

“And you listened.”

“Yes.”

“You kept quiet for eleven months.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe my family secret was about an adoption.”

“I was afraid.”

I looked away.

The anger remained.

But beneath it was something else.

Understanding.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Just understanding.

Then my phone rang.

Michael Reed.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“At the motel.”

“Stay there.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Someone broke into my room.”

My heart tightened.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“What did they take?”

“Everything.”

“What everything?”

“My files.”

“About Nicolas?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Alex.

Michael continued.

“They left one thing behind.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

“Of what?”

“Nicolas.”

“Where?”

“I'll send it.”

The message arrived.

I opened it.

The photograph showed Nicolas standing outside the same hospital where I had been born.

Beside him was Elena.

And behind them stood Dr. Grant.

But there was something else.

A fourth person.

Carmen.

My mother.

I stared at the image.

She wasn't there by accident.

She was talking to Grant.

Nicolas was looking toward them.

The photograph had captured the exact moment.

I zoomed in.

Carmen was holding a document.

Grant was pointing at it.

Nicolas was watching.

I felt cold.

“She knew.”

Alex leaned closer.

“She knew about the study.”

I shook my head.

“We don't know that.”

“But she's there.”

“That proves she met him.”

“Lucia.”

“No.”

I stood.

“I won't turn another photograph into a verdict.”

Alex nodded.

That was the right answer.

We needed evidence.

Not assumptions.

I called Michael again.

“Where did you get this photograph?”

“Nicolas.”

“Did he take it?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Sara.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“She found it in Elena's belongings.”

“Why did she keep it?”

“Because she believed it was the missing link.”

“To what?”

“The study.”

My heart sank.

“What did the study do?”

Michael was silent.

“Michael.”

“It wasn't just medical research.”

“What was it?”

“Genetic tracking.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

“Tracking what?”

“Families with inherited cardiac conditions.”

I looked toward Leo.

Michael continued.

“They wanted generations.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Then find out.”

“I tried.”

“Where is Grant now?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is Javier?”

“I don't know.”

“Then what do you know?”

Michael breathed slowly.

“I know Sara wasn't the first person in your family to die unexpectedly.”

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?”

“Your biological grandmother.”

I froze.

“Elena's mother?”

“Yes.”

“How did she die?”

“Heart failure.”

“That isn't unusual.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“Except she was forty-two.”

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

“Her records were part of the same study.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why did Sara believe someone was responsible?”

“Because she found three generations of medical records.”

My eyes closed.

Three generations.

Elena.

Sara.

Me.

And Leo.

The mark beneath his ear suddenly seemed almost irrelevant.

The real inheritance was something much more dangerous.

A medical history someone had been tracking.

Michael spoke again.

“Sara was trying to expose the study.”

“Did she succeed?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She died.”

I looked at Alex.

Then at Leo.

“What exactly did she leave behind?”

“A drive.”

My heart quickened.

“Where is it?”

Michael hesitated.

“With someone she trusted.”

“Who?”

“You.”

I frowned.

“I don't have anything.”

“Yes, you do.”

“What?”

“Your husband gave it to you.”

I turned toward Alex.

He looked confused.

Michael continued.

“Sara told me she sent the final evidence through Alex.”

I stared at my husband.

“What did she send you?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Check.”

He searched his phone.

Then his laptop.

Nothing.

He checked his office bag.

Nothing.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“The baby bag.”

“What?”

“Sara gave me a diaper bag when she went to the hospital.”

He ran upstairs.

I followed.

Inside the bag were diapers, blankets, bottles, a change of clothes.

Nothing unusual.

Then Alex pulled out the bottom lining.

There was a hidden zipper.

Inside was a small black flash drive.

My heart began pounding.

He handed it to me.

A label was attached.

For Lucia.

I stared at it.

Sara had known.

She had planned for this.

She had trusted Alex to deliver it.

And he had carried it into our home without realizing what it contained.

I plugged it into the laptop.

A single folder appeared.

VIDEO.

There was one file.

Dated three days before Sara died.

I clicked it.

Sara appeared on the screen.

She looked thinner than in the photograph.

But her eyes were steady.

“Lucia,” she said.

I stopped breathing.

“If you're watching this, then I've run out of time.”

She paused.

“I need you to know that Alex didn't betray you.”

I looked at my husband.

Sara continued.

“He made mistakes. So did I. But neither of us understood how deep this went.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“Carmen knew.”

My heart stopped.

“Javier knew.”

Alex's face tightened.

“And Dr. Grant knew.”

Sara took a breath.

“But they weren't the people who started it.”

The video flickered.

Sara looked frightened for the first time.

“The person who started the study is still alive.”

She glanced behind her.

Then whispered:

“And she knows who you are.”

The screen went black.

I stared at it.

Alex didn't move.

Neither did I.

Then another file appeared automatically.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

A woman standing beside Elena in the hospital.

I knew her face.

I had seen her once before.

In one of Carmen's oldest family albums.

My grandmother.

Elena's mother.

But beneath the photograph was a name I had never heard.

Dr. Evelyn Vidal.

I looked at Alex.

“That was my grandmother.”

He nodded slowly.

“She was the doctor who created the study.”

I stared at the screen.

My grandmother had not simply died of heart failure.

She had been at the beginning of everything.

And now I understood why Sara had been so afraid.

The secret hadn't ended with the people who had raised me.

It had passed through generations.

And somewhere inside that flash drive was the evidence that could finally explain why.
