PART 3 – When Daniel Returned Home That Evening, He Asked About My Office Before Asking Why I Had Spent the Day Alone

Daniel came home at 6:42 p.m.

I was in the dining room setting the table.

He walked in, placed his keys on the console, and called for his mother.

No greeting.

No question about my day.

Then he saw me.

“You've been in your office.”

It wasn't a question.

I set down the fork in my hand.

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“What were you doing?”

“Working.”

“You don't work that late anymore.”

“I had things to handle.”

He stared at me.

For several seconds neither of us moved.

Then Evelyn came downstairs.

“Daniel, you're home.”

His attention shifted.

The moment disappeared.

But I had seen his reaction.

He was afraid.

Dinner was quiet.

Evelyn complained about the soup.

Daniel criticized the lighting.

I said almost nothing.

After dinner, I returned upstairs.

I left the office door unlocked.

That was deliberate.

I sat behind the desk with the lights off and waited.

At 10:16 p.m., footsteps approached.

Daniel stopped outside.

He tried the handle.

The door opened.

He entered.

I turned on the desk lamp.

He jumped.

“What are you doing?”

“I was about to ask you the same thing.”

He looked around.

“I thought you were asleep.”

“You thought wrong.”

He smiled thinly.

“You've been acting strange.”

“So have you.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you should stop entering my office without permission.”

“This is my house.”

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

“This is not your house.”

He laughed.

“You've finally lost it.”

I opened the folder on my desk.

“The property is owned by Harper Holdings.”

He stopped laughing.

“You knew that.”

“I knew you lived here.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He looked at the documents.

Then back at me.

“How long?”

I didn't answer.

“How long have you been hiding this from me?”

“Since before we married.”

His face hardened.

“So all those years…”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“I kept my finances private.”

“You let me believe your father left you practically nothing.”

“I never said that.”

“You didn't have to.”

His voice rose.

I closed the folder.

“Lower your voice.”

He leaned toward me.

“You've been testing me.”

“No.”

“You wanted to see whether I would stay if I thought you weren't rich.”

“That isn't what I did.”

“Then what was it?”

I looked at him.

“I wanted to know who you were when you thought I had nothing to give you.”

Silence.

His face went pale.

Then his anger returned.

“You're unbelievable.”

He turned toward the door.

I spoke before he reached it.

“Who owns the consulting company?”

He stopped.

Slowly, he turned around.

“What company?”

“Don't insult me.”

He said nothing.

I watched his face.

The answer was already there.

“You transferred money to your cousin's company.”

His eyes narrowed.

“That's none of your business.”

“It came from our account.”

“It was business.”

“What business?”

He stepped closer.

“You don't understand how these things work.”

“Then explain.”

He laughed once.

“You really think you're going to interrogate me in here?”

“No.”

I pointed to the chair.

“I think you're going to sit down.”

He didn't.

Instead, he reached for the folder.

I pulled it away.

“Don't touch it.”

His hand stopped.

For the first time since I had known him, Daniel looked genuinely uncertain.

Then he said something I had not expected.

“You should be careful.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

He stepped backward.

“It's advice.”

He left.

I locked the door.

Then I sat down and replayed the security footage from the previous night.

There was something I had missed.

Daniel had not photographed the trust documents randomly.

He had focused on one page.

A page listing the property's emergency ownership succession.

If I died, the house would pass into a protected charitable trust unless I had formally changed the beneficiary.

Daniel would receive nothing.

I stared at the screen.

That explained his sudden interest in the property.

But it didn't explain the security access.

I called my attorney.

She answered on the third ring.

“I need you to review something tonight.”

“What happened?”

I told her about the unauthorized access.

Then the transfers.

Then the footage.

There was silence on the line.

Finally, she asked, “Are you physically safe?”

“Yes.”

“Are you certain?”

I looked at the locked door.

“No.”

Her voice changed.

“Then don't confront him again.”

“I already did.”

“I need you to listen carefully. If someone is trying to gain control of your property and has been accessing private records, this is no longer a marital disagreement.”

I closed my eyes.

“What should I do?”

“Preserve everything. Do not delete messages. Don't tell him what you have. And don't leave the house without securing your documents.”

I glanced at the black case.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“I think he's planning something.”

My attorney was silent.

“Why?”

“Because he has been asking questions about the ownership succession.”

Another pause.

“Then we need to move quickly.”

After the call ended, I returned to the security console.

I changed the master password.

Removed every unknown device.

Disabled remote access.

Then I checked the live camera feed.

Daniel was downstairs.

He stood in the hallway.

Looking directly at the camera.

His phone was pressed to his ear.

I couldn't hear the conversation.

Then he smiled.

A minute later, my system displayed an alert.

*ACCESS REQUEST: MASTER CONTROL**

The request had come from inside the house.

I watched the screen.

Someone was trying to take control of my security system again.

This time, Daniel was standing in the hallway while it happened.
