Evelyn agreed to meet the following morning.
She chose a café near the river.
Not the house.
Not Daniel's office.
Somewhere public.
My attorney sat two tables away.
I arrived early.
Evelyn came ten minutes later.
She looked older than she had the day before.
For the first time since she moved into my house, she didn't look angry.
She looked tired.
She sat opposite me.
“You know about the recordings.”
“Yes.”
“You know about the money.”
“Yes.”
Her hands tightened around the coffee cup.
“Then you know Daniel has been trying to protect me.”
“No.”
She looked up.
“He told me he was.”
“He lied.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
I waited.
She looked toward the window.
“My husband left debts.”
I said nothing.
“Daniel has been paying them.”
“With my money?”
“With money he thought he could recover.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“He planned to take my house.”
“He planned to control it.”
“That isn't better.”
“No.”
She looked down.
“I know.”
There was something in her voice that made me pause.
“Why did you come into my house?”
She swallowed.
“Because I had nowhere else to go.”
“You had other options.”
“Not ones Daniel was willing to accept.”
I leaned forward.
“Why?”
“Because he believed that if I lost everything, he would lose everything too.”
That sentence made no sense.
“Explain.”
She hesitated.
Then she told me.
Daniel had borrowed money to cover her debts.
When the loans became impossible to repay, he began using money from the consulting company.
The company was never a legitimate business.
It had been created to move money without drawing attention to the source.
My money.
Our joint account.
My property.
Everything had become part of his solution.
But there was another problem.
Evelyn had discovered something before Daniel did.
The trust protecting the property contained a condition.
If Daniel attempted to obtain control through fraud, coercion, or unauthorized transfer, the trust would trigger an independent investigation.
That investigation could expose every financial transaction connected to the property.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Daniel knew he couldn't simply take it.”
“So he decided to make it appear that I gave it to him.”
“Yes.”
I leaned back.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
She closed her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Daniel?”
“Yes.”
I studied her.
“Has he threatened you?”
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Not directly.”
“What does that mean?”
“He told me that if I cooperated with you, he would stop paying my debts.”
“That isn't a threat?”
“It is.”
Her voice broke.
I looked down at the table.
For months, I had thought Evelyn was simply cruel.
Now I understood that she had been trapped in a different part of the same plan.
That didn't excuse what she had done.
But it explained some of it.
“What did Daniel want from you?”
“To convince you to leave.”
“And if I didn't?”
“He said he would make the house unbearable.”
I thought of the early mornings.
The criticism.
The arguments.
The locked doors.
The security failures.
The forged documents.
It had all been pressure.
Not random cruelty.
A strategy.
Evelyn reached into her handbag.
She removed an envelope.
“I found this in Daniel's room.”
She placed it on the table.
I didn't touch it.
“What is it?”
“A copy of the final agreement.”
I opened it.
My name appeared at the top.
The document claimed I had voluntarily transferred operational control of the property to Daniel after deciding to relocate.
The date was set for the following week.
My attorney had been right.
He had a deadline.
“What happens next week?”
Evelyn stared at me.
“He planned to have you removed.”
My blood went cold.
“By whom?”
“Private security.”
“Under what authority?”
“He has documents.”
Forged documents.
Of course.
I looked at the date again.
Seven days.
Daniel had planned everything around a single deadline.
Then I noticed something else.
A handwritten note in the margin.
“Emergency succession review — 10 a.m.”
I showed it to my attorney.
She came over.
Her face changed.
“This isn't about the house alone.”
“What is it?”
She read the document again.
Then looked at me.
“The trust administrator is scheduled to review the property next week.”
“Why?”
“Because someone filed a claim.”
“Who?”
She pointed to the signature.
Daniel.
He had filed a claim asserting that I had transferred control voluntarily.
The review would determine whether the claim had merit.
I understood the danger.
If Daniel could present enough false evidence before the hearing, the administrator might freeze the property while investigating.
That would give him exactly what he wanted.
Time.
Access.
Leverage.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why give me this?”
She looked down.
“Because I finally realized he wasn't going to stop.”
“Why now?”
“Because last night he told me something.”
“What?”
“He said once you were gone, I would have the house.”
I waited.
Evelyn's voice became almost inaudible.
“Then he said I wouldn't need to worry about him anymore.”
I stared at her.
“What did he mean?”
“I don't know.”
But her expression told me she had thought about it.
Perhaps she knew.
Perhaps she was afraid to say it.
My attorney returned to the table.
“We need to move before the review.”
“How?”
She looked at me.
“By showing the trust administrator everything.”
“Everything?”
“Every recording. Every forged document. Every security log. Every financial transfer.”
I nodded.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
There was no greeting.
Only a photograph.
It showed me sitting inside the café.
Taken from across the street.
Underneath it were six words.
“You should have listened to your husband.”
I looked through the window.
Across the street, a black car was parked beside the curb.
The driver's seat was empty.
The rear window was dark.
My attorney saw the photograph.
She immediately stood.
“We're leaving.”
Evelyn grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
I looked at her.
She was staring at the car.
Then she whispered something that made my entire body go cold.
“That isn't Daniel's car.”
