We drove back immediately.
The security system showed movement in the basement.
Three separate sensors had activated.
The first was near the service corridor.
The second was outside the emergency control room.
The third was at the staircase leading into the main house.
My attorney called the police.
I watched the map on the tablet.
A small red indicator moved through the property.
Whoever was inside knew exactly where they were going.
That was what frightened me most.
The basement corridor wasn't marked on ordinary architectural plans.
My father had designed it as an emergency passage.
Only a handful of people knew it existed.
My father.
The original architect.
The security company.
And me.
At least, that was what I had believed.
The red indicator stopped.
Then disappeared.
The system had been disabled again.
I looked at my attorney.
“They're in the control room.”
“We're not going inside.”
“I need to know what they're doing.”
“The police will handle it.”
We waited outside the property.
Ten minutes later, two patrol cars arrived.
The officers entered through the front door.
We watched the cameras.
One officer reached the basement.
The feed disappeared.
Then another camera went black.
The house went completely dark on the monitoring screen.
I felt my pulse hammering.
“What happened?”
My attorney shook her head.
“We don't know.”
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Finally, an officer emerged from the house.
He was holding a small black device.
“We found someone.”
My breath caught.
“Who?”
“A man.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
The officer looked at me.
“He says he was hired to inspect the security system.”
I stared at him.
“By whom?”
He gave me a name.
A name I didn't recognize.
The man had identification.
A work order.
And a digital authorization supposedly signed by me.
Another forged document.
The investigator examined it.
“The signature is fake.”
The officer nodded.
“We suspected as much.”
The man was taken into custody for questioning.
Before leaving, the officer told us something else.
“He had a copy of your property floor plan.”
My attorney's face tightened.
“Where did he get it?”
The officer looked at me.
“He said your husband gave it to him.”
Daniel.
Of course.
But why would Daniel need someone else to enter the house?
The answer became clear when we reviewed the man's phone.
He had been communicating with Daniel for several weeks.
Not just about the house.
About me.
There were photographs.
My car.
My office window.
The entrance to the property.
My daily schedule.
The investigator scrolled through them.
I felt exposed.
“How long?”
“Several weeks,” he said.
I stared at the screen.
Someone had been watching me.
Not from inside the house.
From outside.
Daniel had arranged surveillance.
My attorney asked whether any of the photographs had been sent to other people.
The investigator checked.
Most had gone to Daniel's number.
But one contact appeared repeatedly.
No name.
Only a phone number.
The investigator traced it.
The number belonged to a private investigator.
I looked at my attorney.
“Why hire a private investigator?”
She didn't answer immediately.
“Perhaps because he wanted information he couldn't obtain legally.”
We returned to the security company.
The emergency control room had been breached.
The intruder had attempted to copy the system's master authorization key.
But he had failed.
The backup system had locked itself automatically.
That was the one thing Daniel hadn't known.
My father had designed it that way.
If anyone attempted unauthorized extraction, the system would erase temporary access credentials and preserve the original authorization in a separate offline device.
The technician handed me the device.
It was small enough to fit in my palm.
“This is the master key.”
I closed my fingers around it.
“This is what Daniel wanted.”
“Yes.”
I understood why.
With it, he could have controlled every connected device in the property.
Cameras.
Locks.
Alarms.
Remote access.
He could have created evidence.
He could have erased evidence.
He could even have locked me out.
I looked at the technician.
“Can he still access the system?”
“Not without this.”
I held up the device.
“And this never leaves my possession again.”
He nodded.
That evening, Daniel finally appeared in person.
He didn't come to the house.
He came to my attorney's office.
He asked to speak with me privately.
I refused.
He waited in reception.
Through the glass wall, I could see him sitting calmly.
His suit was immaculate.
His hands were folded.
He looked like the man I had married.
Not the man from the recordings.
Not the man who had ordered someone into my home.
Not the man who had planned to make me appear abandoned.
My attorney entered the room.
“He says he wants to explain.”
“I don't want an explanation.”
“You may want to hear him.”
“Why?”
“Because whatever he says can be documented.”
I agreed.
Daniel entered.
He sat across from me.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at me.
“You're making this much bigger than it is.”
I almost smiled.
“You hired someone to enter my house through a hidden corridor.”
“I didn't.”
“We have the messages.”
He looked at my attorney.
“You've been manipulating her.”
My attorney said nothing.
Daniel looked back at me.
“Your father built all these systems around you, and now you're hiding behind them.”
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“You knew about the corridor.”
He didn't answer.
“That means you knew about the control room.”
Still nothing.
“How?”
He leaned back.
“Because you told me.”
I shook my head.
“I never did.”
“You did.”
“When?”
“After we got married.”
I remembered every conversation.
He was lying.
But then he said something specific.
“The old blueprints were in the garage.”
I froze.
He had seen them.
Years ago.
I had forgotten.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That was your mistake.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
His smile disappeared.
“My mistake was trusting you.”
He stood.
Before leaving, he said quietly, “You still don't understand what Evelyn knows.”
Then he walked away.
I looked at my attorney.
“What does that mean?”
She was already checking the evidence from the storage unit.
“We're going to find out.”
